Fetal heart rate and fetal movements.

Fetal Heart Rate (F.H.R.) in association with fetal movement was evaluated in 141 normal and pathological pregnancies. In the normal cases only 31% showed an acceleration of F.H.R. in association with fetal movement. The majority of the normal cases, 62%, did not demonstrate changes in F.H.R. in association with fetal movement. In the pathological pregnancies there were no characteristic changes in F.H.R. associated with fetal movement. It appears that F.H.R. acceleration associated with fetal movement cannot be used as an index for fetal well being.

Fetal movements as an indicator of fetal wellbeing.

The value of maternal monitoring of fetal movements (FM) was assessed in 2250 pregnant women. Half of the women were taught to count FM methodically and contact the hospital if they felt less than 3 FM per hour. The controls were not given any specific instructions about counting FM. There were 8 intrauterine deaths in infants weighing more than 1500 g without major malformations in the control group and no deaths in the group with maternal monitoring of FM. These results demonstrate that maternal monitoring of FM can aid the opportune delivery of infants who are at increased risk of intrauter

Women's Experiences of Fetal Movements before the Confirmation of Fetal Death--Contractions Misinterpreted as Fetal Movement.

BACKGROUND: Decreased fetal movement often precedes a stillbirth. The objective of this study was to describe women's experiences of fetal movement before the confirmation of fetal death. METHODS: Data were collected through a Web-based questionnaire. Women with stillbirths after 28 gestational weeks were self-recruited. Content analysis was used to analyze the answers to one open question. The statements from mothers of a stillborn, born during gestational weeks 28 to 36 were compared with those of a stillborn at term. RESULTS: The women's 215 answers were divided into three categories: dec

Fetal movement counting for assessment of fetal wellbeing.

BACKGROUND: Fetal movement counting is a method by which a woman quantifies the movements she feels to assess the condition of her baby. The purpose is to try to reduce perinatal mortality by alerting caregivers when the baby might be compromised. This method may be used routinely, or only in women who are considered at increased risk of complications affecting the baby. Fetal movement counting may allow the clinician to make appropriate interventions in good time to improve outcomes. On the other hand, fetal movement counting may cause unnecessary anxiety to pregnant women, or elicit unnecess

Hypothesis: fetal movement influences fetal and infant bone strength.

Infants who present with multiple unexplained fractures in which there is no prior trauma, no radiographic evidence of metabolic bone disease, and no biochemical evidence of metabolic bone disease are almost always diagnosed as victims of child abuse, even though parents and caregivers deny wrongdoing. Such a diagnosis has far reaching implications for the infant and family. This article describes the clinical features of 65 such infants with multiple unexplained fractures in which the parents and caregivers deny wrongdoing and in which child abuse was diagnosed. These infants have the phenoty

Counting gross fetal movement using a fetal movement acceleration measurement recorder in two fetuses with gastroschisis.

We used the fetal movement acceleration measurement recorder to count gross fetal movement in two fetuses with gastroschisis. In conclusion, both fetuses moved as much as normal fetuses, which suggested that normal fetal movement could indicate reassuring status also in fetuses with malformation when they have normal neurological developments.

Maternal perception of fetal movements in late pregnancy is affected by type and duration of fetal movement.

OBJECTIVE: A reduction in fetal movements has been proposed to identify pregnancies at risk of stillbirth. The utility of this approach is limited by variability in maternal perception of fetal movements. We aimed to determine the proportion of fetal movements observed by ultrasound that were maternally perceived and identify factors that affected maternal perception. METHOD: During 30-min recordings, women (n = 21) depressed a trigger upon perception of a fetal movement, while an ultrasound operator recorded observed movements according to the fetal parts involved. RESULTS: Women perceived

Abnormal fetal movements, micrognathia and pulmonary hypoplasia: a case report. Abnormal fetal movements.

BACKGROUND: Micrognathia is a facial malformation characterized by mandibular hypoplasia and a small, receding chin that fails to maintain the tongue in a forward position. We previously reported a system of prenatal screening that we developed to identify fetuses with compromised central nervous system function by observing fetal behavior. In this paper we report the case of a preterm infant with micrognathia and pulmonary hypoplasia who presented abnormal fetal movements. CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old Japanese primigravida at 33 weeks of gestation was referred to our hospital. Ultrasonog

Fetal movements as a predictor of health.

The key determinant to a fetus maintaining its health is through adequate perfusion and oxygen transfer mediated by the functioning placenta. When this equilibrium is distorted, a number of physiological changes, including reduced fetal growth, occur to favor survival. Technologies have been developed to monitor these changes with a view to prolong intrauterine maturity while reducing the risks of stillbirth. Many of these strategies involve complex interpretation, for example Doppler ultrasound for fetal blood flow and computerized analysis of fetal heart rate changes. However, even with thes

Decreased fetal movements and polyhydramnios.

It was previously demonstrated that in high-risk pregnancies, pronounced reduction of fetal movements until cessation, with audible fetal heart sounds, indicates severe fetal distress and impending death. Immediate delivery is indicated provided the fetus is viable. Three instances of cessation of fetal movements associated with polyhydramnios are reported; the fetuses proved to have malformations lethal for the newborn infant. These cases of polyhydramnios with diminished fetal movements stress the importance of investigating fetal morphology in this condition. Antenatal diagnosis of congenit

Decreased fetal movement prompts investigation of prenatal/neonatal nemaline myopathy: the possible merit of fetal movement count.

We highlight the merit of fetal movement count to identify a fetus with neuromuscular disorder: nemaline myopathy. A 38-year-old 1-para woman not in a consanguineous marriage had decreased fetal movement. This, together with increased amniotic fluid volume, led us to perform detailed ultrasound examinations, which revealed stretch contracture of the knee joints, leading us to suspect fetal neuromuscular disorders. At 38(2/7), she gave birth vaginally to a 2444 g female infant. Her respiration was very weak, requiring respiratory support. Contractures of the upper/lower extremity joints and clu

Counting fetal movements of small-for-gestational infants using a fetal movement acceleration measurement recorder.

Background: Our purpose was to clarify whether small-for-gestational (SGA) infants is associated with a decrease in fetal movements (FMs) even in the absence of hypoxia. We used a fetal movement acceleration measurement (FMAM) recorder, which enabled counting gross FMs for hours at a time. Methods: (1) Parameters of FMs for 13 women who delivered SGA infants were plotted over normal reference value curves made from 64 normal pregnant women in another study. (2) Linear regression analysis was conducted for the women with SGA infants and the normal pregnant women. Results: Thirty-eight data record

The effects of fetal breathing movements on the utero-fetal-placental circulation.

Important factors which may affect the fetal circulation are the fetal breathing movements (FBMs) and other movements adn the features of fetal circulation. Recent studies have demonstrated that FBMs are a normal phenomenon of intrauterine development and that there are two patterns of FBMs: (1) A predominant pattern of rapid, irregular (in rate and amplitude) episodic movements, with interspersed episodes of apnea that is present more than 50 percent of the time and accounts for more than 90 percent of the breathing activity. Interestingly, periodic sighs are often seen during these FBMs; (2)

Fetal movements: A framework for antenatal conversations.

BACKGROUND: Presentations for decreased fetal movements comprise a significant proportion of acute antenatal assessments. Decreased fetal movements are associated with increased likelihood of adverse pregnancy outcomes including stillbirth. Consensus-based guidelines recommend pregnant women routinely receive information about fetal movements, but practice is inconsistent, and the information shared is frequently not evidence-based. There are also knowledge gaps about the assessment and management of fetal movement concerns. Women have indicated that they would like more accurate information a

A transducer for detection of fetal breathing movements.

The paper describes a new transducer for detection of fetal movements and sounds from the maternal abdominal wall. This transducer is based on an inductive principle. The compliance of the transducer should match the compliance of the maternal abdominal wall in order to detect the very weak acoustic signal caused by individual fetal breathing movements. The contact area of the transducer is supported on a membrane, the tension of which can be adjusted so as to match the compliances of tissue and transducer. The goal of this paper is to investigate detection of fetal movements in order to monit

Incidence of spontaneous and evoked fetal movements.

Fetal activity is composed of fetal movements (FM), which are either nonreflexive, originating in the fetus itself, or evoked reflexive FM which are stimulated by the fetal environment. The relative ratio of the spontaneous to evoked FM has not yet been documented. Since it is impossible to differentiate in a singleton pregnancy between these two types of FM on the basis of maternal perception alone, the natural model of twin pregnancy was used. It has previously been shown that the number of FM in a singleton pregnancy is similar to that of each individual fetus in a twin pregnancy of the sam

Fetal breathing movements. An update for the pediatrician.

Although the presence of fetal breathing movements (FBMs) has been suspected for almost a century, the major advances in the field were made during the last decade. Experimental animal techniques of detection include instrumentation of fetuses with electronic recording equipment. Human studies use more indirect, although no less accurate, A-mode or real-time B-scan ultrasonography in the recording of FBMs. The fetus does not make breathing movements continuously; however, there are periods of FBMs interspersed with periods of apnea. Inherent to FBMs is a diurnal variation. Hypoxia and hypoglyc

The central control of fetal breathing and movements.

In fetal lambs after 115 days gestation breathing movements become episodic in association with electrocortical differentiation into predominantly high voltage slow or low voltage rapid activity, the latter characteristic of rapid eye movement sleep. Section of the brainstem at or above the colliculi dissociates fetal breathing from electrocortical activity. It is included that breathing is inhibited, towards the end of gestation, by a supracollicular mechanism during high voltage activity. After brainstem transection at the colliculi hypoxia no longer causes an arrest of fetal breathing, whic
