Thermal Degradation of Organophosphorus Flame Retardants.

The development of new organophosphorus flame retardants for polymeric materials is spurred by relatively low toxicity, effectiveness, and demand for replacement of more traditional materials. To function, these compounds must decompose in a degrading polymer matrix to form species which promote modification of the solid phase or generate active radical moieties that escape to the gas phase and interrupt combustion propagating reactions. An understanding of the decomposition process for these compounds may provide insight into the nature of flame retardant action which they may offer and sugge

Brominated flame retardants as possible endocrine disrupters.

Brominated flame retardants (BFR) are endocrine disrupters in experimental systems, both in vitro and in vivo. Although BFR effects on thyroid hormones are well confirmed, studies of effects on oestrogen/androgen systems are fewer but today growing in numbers. The effects of BFR on other hormone systems are still unknown. Hormonal effect levels in animals start from ca 1 mg/kg b.w., but there are exceptions: effects on spermatogenesis, suggesting hormonal causes, have been observed at a low dose (60 microg/kg b.w.) of a polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congener, BDE-99. It could be conclud

Impact of Flame Retardants on the Reproductive System.

Flame retardants are a diverse class of environmental contaminants widely used to reduce flammability in consumer products, leading to pervasive human exposure. Among these, polybrominated flame retardants (PBFRs), including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and organophosphate ester flame retardants (OPEs) have raised significant concern due to their potential to disrupt reproductive health. Increasing experimental, epidemiological, and mechanistic evidence demonstrates that both PBDEs and OPEs adversely affect both the male and female reproductive systems. In males, exposure to these c

Modification of Glass/Polyester Laminates with Flame Retardants.

This paper presents a review of flame retardants used for glass/polyester laminates. It concerns flame retardants withdrawn from use such as compounds containing halogen atoms and flame retardants currently used in the industry, such as inorganic hydroxides, phosphorus and nitrogen-containing compounds, antimony, and boron compounds, as well as tin-zinc compounds. Attention is also drawn to the use of nanoclays and the production of nanocomposites, intumescent flame retardant systems, and mats, as well as polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes. The paper discusses the action mechanism of partic

Brominated flame retardants in offices in Michigan, USA.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are now ubiquitous contaminants with large reservoirs and high concentrations in buildings. Most of the information documenting BFR levels has been obtained in residences, and other environments that can lead to exposure have received relatively little attention, including offices that contain numerous BFR sources and where individuals spend considerable time. The aim of this study is to characterize BFR concentrations, potential emission sources, and migration pathways in office environments. We measure BFR levels in floor dust, indoor air, ventilation filte

Flame Retardancy and Mechanism of Novel Phosphorus-Silicon Flame Retardant Based on Polysilsesquioxane.

A novel phosphorus-silicon flame retardant (P5PSQ) was prepared by bonding phosphate to silicon-based polysilsesquioxane (PSQ) and used as flame retardant of poly (lactic acid) (PLA). The results show that PLA with 10 wt % P5PSQ has a limiting oxygen index (LOI) 24.1%, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) of PLA decrease 21.8% and 25.2% compared to neat PLA in cone calorimetric test, indicating that P5PSQ shows better flame retardancy in comparison to PSQ. Furthermore, the study for the morphology and composition of carbon residue after the combustion of PLA and the g

Composite Flame Retardants Based on Conjugated Microporous Polymer Hollow Nanospheres with Excellent Flame Retardancy.

The development of polymer materials with excellent flame retardancy has been paid increasing attention for their valuable applications in saving energy in modern architecture. Herein, conjugated microporous polymers hollow nanospheres (CMPs-HNS) were prepared by Sonogashira-Hagihara cross-coupling reaction with 1,3,5-triacetylenebenzene, 3-amino-2,6-dibromopyridine, and 2,4,6-tribromoaniline as building blocks using SiO2 nanoparticles as hard templates. To enhance the flame-retardant performance of the CMPs-HNS, antimony pentoxide solution (Sb2O5) and bisphenol A-bis (diphenyl phosphate) (BDP

Mechanical Properties of Polypropylene-Based Flame Retardant Composites by Surface Modification of Flame Retardants.

A flame retardant refers to a substance that can be added to a material having the property of being efficiently combusted to improve the material physically and chemically. It should not affect the physical properties required for the final product. Halogen-based compounds are representative flame retardants with excellent flame retardancy. However, their use is limited due to restrictions on the use of chemicals introduced due to human safety. Magnesium hydroxide, one alternative material of halogen flame retardants, is widely used as an eco-friendly flame retardant. However, the most signif

Preparation of a Highly Flame-Retardant Urea-Formaldehyde Resin and Flame Retardance Mechanism.

Urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin is the most widely used adhesive resin. However, it is necessary to improve its flame-retardant performance to expand its applications. In this study, exploiting electrostatic interactions, anionic phytic acid and cationic chitosan were combined to form a bio-based intumescent flame-retardant, denoted phytic acid-chitosan polyelectrolyte (PCS). The molecular structure of the urea-formaldehyde resin was optimized by crosslinking with melamine and plasticizing with polyvinyl alcohol-124. Thus, by combining PCS with the urea-formaldehyde resin and with ammonium polyph

Toxicity of new generation flame retardants to Daphnia magna.

There is a tendency to substitute frequently used, but relatively hazardous brominated flame retardants (BFRs) with halogen-free flame retardants (HFFRs). Consequently, information on the persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity (PBT) of these HFFRs is urgently needed, but large data gaps and inconsistencies exist. Therefore, in the present study the toxicity of a wide range of HFFRs to the water flea Daphnia magna was investigated. Our results revealed that four HFFRs were showing no effect at their Sw (saturated water concentration) and three had a low toxicity (EC50>10 mg L(-1)), suggestin

Brominated flame retardants in serum from U.S. blood donors.

Serum samples collected in 1988 from U.S. blood donors were analyzed for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated and polybrominated biphenyls (PCBs and PBBs). The levels of the PBDEs are reported for the first time in serum from the U.S. population. The median concentrations and range of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47); 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-153); 2,2',3,4,4',5',6-heptabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-183); and decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) were 1.3 (<0.8-49); 0.54 (0.13-3.1); 0.24 (0.12-1.8); and <1 (<1-35) pmol/g lipid weight (l.w.), respectiv

Methods for the determination of phenolic brominated flame retardants, and by-products, formulation intermediates and decomposition products of brominated flame retardants in water.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are the chemicals of high importance within the REAch framework. In addition to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), other BFRs such as bromophenols, intermediates in FR formulation like bromoanilines, and their brominated and non-brominated by-products such as bromoanisoles, bromotoluenes, bromoalkanes and 1,5,9-cyclododecatriene, respectively should be monitored and controlled because of their toxicity and their very low odour and taste thresholds, below sub-nanogram-per liter levels. Human health risk associated with brominated flame-retardants (BFRs).

The purposes of this review are to assess the human exposure and human and experimental evidence for adverse effects of brominated flame-retardants (BFRs) with specific focus on intake from seafood. The leakage of BFRs from consumer products leads to exposure of humans from fetal life to adulthood. Fish and fish products contain the highest levels of BFRs and dominate the dietary intake of frequent fish eaters in Europe, while meat, followed by seafood and dairy products accounted for the highest US dietary intake. House dust is also reported as an important source of exposure for children as

Aryl Polyphosphonates: Useful Halogen-Free Flame Retardants for Polymers.

Aryl polyphosphonates (ArPPN) have been demonstrated to function in wide applications as flame retardants for different polymer materials, including thermosets, polycarbonate, polyesters and polyamides, particularly due to their satisfactory thermal stability compared to aliphatic flame retardants, and to their desirable flow behavior observed during the processing of polymeric materials. This paper provides a brief overview of the main developments in ArPPN and their derivatives for flame-retarding polymeric materials, primarily based on the authors' research work and the literature published

An eco-friendly NP flame retardant for durable flame-retardant treatment of cotton fabric.

A halogen-free, formaldehyde-free, efficient, durable, NP flame retardant, the ammonium salt of meglumine phosphoric ester acid (ASMPEA), was prepared. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR, 13C NMR, and 31P NMR) results indicated that ASMPEA was grafted onto cotton fibers by P-O-C covalent bonds. The LOI value of 30 wt% ASMPEA-treated cotton fabric was 40.2%, and after 50 laundering cycles (LCs), the LOI value decreased to 29.4%, indicating that the cotton fibers treated with ASMPEA were endowed with excellent durable flame reta

Preparation and Characterization of the Flame-Retardant Decorated Plywood Based on the Intumescent Flame Retardant Adhesive.

A novel type of flame-retardant decorated plywood (FDP) was designed and prepared based on one kind of intumescent flame-retardant adhesive. The flame-retardant adhesive was composed of the phosphorous-nitrogen flame retardant and melamine urea formaldehyde (MUF) resin. An adhesive was placed between the plywood substrate and the decorative veneer. The shear strength of the FDP satisfied the Class II (GB/T 9846) when the ratio of flame-retardant and MUF was less than 0.65. The thermal stability of the flame-retardant adhesive was measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The intumescent be

Potential Glucocorticoid and Mineralocorticoid Effects of Nine Organophosphate Flame Retardants.

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), as alternatives of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), have been frequently detected in the environment and biota, and could pose adverse effects on organisms. However, information on the potential endocrine disruption of OPFRs, especially their effects on steroid hormone receptors, such as glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptors (GR/MR), is limited. In this study, the dual-luciferase reporter gene assay via GR/MR and a H295R steroidogenesis assay were employed to evaluate the endocrine disruption of nine OPFRs. We found TMPP, TPHP, and TDBP
