Collagenous Gastritis Masquerading as Eosinophilic Gastritis.

A 11-year-old boy presented to the gastroenterology clinic after a 5-month history of fatigue, pallor, intermittent abdominal pain, and iron-deficiency anemia. Although the initial upper endoscopy was visually normally, the histological assessment was suggestive of eosinophilic gastritis. After multiple scopes and failed therapies, histologic analysis revealed a focus of thickened subepithelial collagen deposition suggestive of collagenous gastritis. A retrospective review of gastric biopsies using Gomori trichrome stain revealed previously unappreciated collagen deposition. This case report i…

Luetic gastritis: an uncommon cause of gastritis.

A 41-year-old patient presented to the Dermatology clinic with a papular rash on the trunk and orange-colored maculopapular lesions on the soles of both feet. This was associated with general symptoms including myalgia, fatigue, epigastric pain, nausea and vomiting. The patient had been taking omeprazole and cinitapride with little improvement.

Gastritis.

A wide variety of infectious, inflammatory, and other disorders affect the gastric mucosa in pediatric patients. The most common cause of gastritis in children is Helicobacter pylori infection, which is also responsible for the majority of duodenal ulcers. Acute erosive gastritis is most commonly the result of metabolic stress or drug or corrosive injury. Other major causes of gastritis include celiac disease, allergic disorders, and Crohn's disease. The distinctive clinical, endoscopic, and histologic features of these disorders are discussed.

[Gastritis].

Eradication of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has suggested not only the decrease in the incidence of peptic ulcer diseases and gastric cancer, and but also the improvement of dyspeptic symptoms. Dyspepsia is a common condition in the world, and dyspepsia-related medical cost is high due to consultations, investigations, and drug consumption. Although the role of H. pylori in functional dyspepsia is still unknown, recent studies including meta-analysis have indicated that H. pylori eradication improves dyspeptic symptoms. In addition, the reduction of medical cost by H. pylori eradication has

[Varioliform gastritis: frequency and relationship with lymphocytic gastritis].

Varioliform gastritis is currently recognized as a special kind of chronic gastritis characterized by nodules, thickened fugal folds and erosions. These features appear to be unusual and different from those seen in chronic gastritis. The frequency of varioliform gastritis rarely exceeds 3% and the diagnosis can be easily made by endoscopic examination. Very little is known about the etiopathogeny, clinical significance and evolution of this disease. The role of Helicobacter pylori still remains unknown, although a close relationship between this gastritis and lymphocytic gastritis was suggest…

Emphysematous gastritis.

An 89-year-old woman who had type 2 diabetes mellitus suddenly presented with abdominal pain. Abdominal computed tomography showed thickening of the wall and intramural gas in the gastric hilum, suggesting emphysematous gastritis. The patient underwent treatment with a proton-pump inhibitor and broad-spectrum antibacterial agents.

Autoimmune gastritis.

Autoimmune gastritis (AIG) is an increasingly prevalent, organ-specific, immune-mediated disorder characterized by the destruction of gastric parietal cells, leading to the loss of intrinsic factor and reduced acid output. These alterations result in malabsorption of iron, vitamin B12 (pernicious anaemia) and potentially other micronutrients. For several years, most studies have focused on pernicious anaemia only, generating confusion between the two entities. In AIG, the gastric proton pump, H+/K+ ATPase, is the major autoantigen recognized by autoreactive T cells. The T cell-dependent activa…

Autoimmune gastritis.

Autoimmune gastritis is a chronic inflammatory disease with destruction of parietal cells of the corpus and fundus of the stomach. The known consequence is vitamin B12 deficiency and, consequently, pernicious anemia. However, loss of parietal cells reduces secretion of gastric acid which is also required for absorption of inorganic iron; thus, iron deficiency is commonly found in patients with autoimmune gastritis. This usually precedes vitamin B12 deficiency and is found mainly in young women. Patients with chronic iron deficiency, especially those refractory to oral iron therapy, should ther…

Chronic gastritis.

Prevalence of chronic gastritis has markedly declined in developed populations during the past decades. However, chronic gastritis is still one of the most common serious pandemic infections with such severe killing sequelae as peptic ulcer or gastric cancer. Globally, on average, even more than half of people may have a chronic gastritis at present. Helicobacter pylori infection in childhood is the main cause of chronic gastritis, which microbial origin is the key for the understanding of the bizarre epidemiology and course of the disease. A life-long and aggressive inflammation in gastritis …

Canine gastritis.

Gastritis--inflammation of the stomach--is a frequently cited differential yet rarely characterized diagnosis in cases of canine anorexia and vomiting. Although the list of rule-outs for acute or chronic gastritis is extensive, a review of the veterinary literature reveals fewer than 15 articles that have focused on clinical cases of canine gastritis over the last 25 years. The dog frequently appears in the human literature as an experimentally manipulated model for the study of endoscopic techniques or the effect of medications on gastric mucosa. In the veterinary patient, cases of acute gast…
