Introgression across ploidies contributes to genetic diversity in introduced urban Capsella bursa-pastoris.

Successful establishment of a species in a new range is a useful way to understand the impact of demography and selection on the evolution of globally distributed species. In particular, introductions influence genetic diversity and population structure in the introduced range in unpredictable ways. Additionally, introgressive hybridization is often associated with successful establishment in new ranges. In this study, we explore the impact of introgressive hybridization on the polyploid Capsella bursa-pastoris in the New York City metropolitan area. We find Capsella bursa-pastoris in the New

Genetic basis of escape-related locomotor performance in a wild-introgressed sheep population.

Rapid running and jumping are core components of escape responses in prey animals and provide measurable traits for studying locomotor performance in large mammals. The genetic basis of these escape-related locomotor traits remains poorly understood in large mammals, partly because repeated, standardized phenotyping under field conditions is challenging. Here, we leveraged a sheep population carrying argali-introgressed genetic components to map genetic variations associated with running speed and jumping height. Through controlled field experiments, automated high-resolution phenotyping, whol

Overcoming Ploidy Barriers: The Role of Triploid Bridges in the Genetic Introgression of Cardamine amara.

Polyploidisation is a significant reproductive barrier, yet genetic evidence indicates that interploidy admixture is more common than previously thought. Theoretical models and controlled crosses support the 'triploid bridge' hypothesis, proposing that hybrids of intermediate ploidy facilitate gene flow. However, comprehensive evidence combining experimental and genetic data from natural mixed-ploidy species is missing. Here, we investigated the rates and directionality of gene flow within a diploid-autotetraploid contact zone of Cardamine amara, a species with abundant natural triploids. We c

Adaptive introgression reveals the genetic basis of a sexually selected syndrome in wall lizards.

The joint expression of particular colors, morphologies, and behaviors is a common feature of adaptation, but the genetic basis for such "phenotypic syndromes" remains poorly understood. Here, we identified a complex genetic architecture associated with a sexually selected syndrome in common wall lizards, by capitalizing on the adaptive introgression of coloration and morphology into a distantly related lineage. Consistent with the hypothesis that the evolution of phenotypic syndromes in vertebrates is facilitated by developmental linkage through neural crest cells, most of the genes associate

The genetic diversity of Indonesian cattle has been shaped by multiple introductions and adaptive introgression.

Genetic diversity is a crucial resource in livestock, determining their traits and ability to respond to selection. Indonesian cattle are unique due to their history of admixture involving both zebu (Bos indicus) and banteng (B. javanicus), and may therefore contain novel cattle genetic resources. We generated whole genome sequences from 126 Indonesian cattle, 51 domesticated banteng and three captive banteng. We show that Indonesian cattle have very high genetic diversity, especially the Madura breed due to introgression from banteng and possibly other Bos species, contributing up to 36.6% of

An Exploratory Analysis of Genetic Structure and Introgression in Salmo trutta Populations from Campania Rivers.

The Salmo trutta complex exhibits high genetic and phenotypic diversity due also to the historical climatic events and colonization processes. In Europe, several evolutionary lineages have been identified, including the Atlantic and Mediterranean. In Italy, native Mediterranean trout populations have been threatened by restocking practices involving hatchery-reared fish of Atlantic origin, thus resulting in widespread hybridization and genetic introgression. This study aimed to genetically characterize trout populations from selected river basins of the Campania region (southern Italy) and to

Introgression Shapes Genetic Variation Associated With Humid Environments in Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes From Saudi Arabia.

Introgression between genetically distinct populations generates variation that may promote adaptation to diverse environmental conditions. In the mosquito Aedes aegypti, the forest-associated subspecies Aedes aegypti formosus (Aaf) underwent a domestication process approximately 5000 years ago, giving rise to the globally invasive, human-associated arbovirus vector Aedes aegypti aegypti (Aaa). Despite extensive human-mediated transport, the two subspecies remain largely distinct, with admixture documented mainly in coastal Africa and Saudi Arabia. We examined Saudi Arabian Ae. aegypti across

The rates of introgression and barriers to genetic exchange between hybridizing species: sex chromosomes vs autosomes.

Interspecific crossing experiments have shown that sex chromosomes play a major role in reproductive isolation between many pairs of species. However, their ability to act as reproductive barriers, which hamper interspecific genetic exchange, has rarely been evaluated quantitatively compared to Autosomes. This genome-wide limitation of gene flow is essential for understanding the complete separation of species, and thus speciation. Here, we develop a mainland-island model of secondary contact between hybridizing species of an XY (or ZW) sexual system. We obtain theoretical predictions for the

Genetic dissection of lymphopenia from autoimmunity by introgression of mutated Ian5 gene onto the F344 rat.

Peripheral T cell lymphopenia (lyp) in the BioBreeding (BB) rat is linked to a frameshift mutation in Ian5, a member of the Immune Associated Nucleotide (Ian) gene family on rat chromosome 4. This lymphopenia leads to type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus (T1DM) at rates up to 100% when combined with the BB rat MHC RT1 u/u genotype. In order, to better study the lymphopenia phenotype without possible confounding effects of diabetes or other autoimmune disease, we generated congenic F344.lyp rats by introgression of lyp on diabetes-resistant MHC RT1 lv1/lv1 F344 rats. Analysis of thymic

Genetic evidence of interspecies introgression of mitochondrial genomes between Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella britovi under natural conditions.

Trichinellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Trichinella muscle larvae (ML) through ingestion of raw or undercooked meat. To date, 12 taxa are recognized in this genus, of which four are circulating in Europe (Trichinella spiralis, Trichinella nativa, Trichinella britovi and Trichinella pseudospiralis). T. spiralis and T. britovi circulate in European wildlife and occur simultaneously in the same host species. The possibility of hybrid formation between T. britovi and T. spiralis has hardly been addressed and so far, results of experimental hybridisation attempts between T. britovi and T. sp

Parallel genetic divergence among coastal-marine ecotype pairs of European anchovy explained by differential introgression after secondary contact.

Ecophenotypic differentiation among replicate ecotype pairs within a species complex is often attributed to independent outcomes of parallel divergence driven by adaptation to similar environmental contrasts. However, the extent to which parallel phenotypic and genetic divergence patterns have emerged independently is increasingly questioned by population genomic studies. Here, we document the extent of genetic differentiation within and among two geographic replicates of the coastal and marine ecotypes of the European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) gathered from Atlantic and Mediterranean l

Genetic Analysis of the Red Anther Trait Introgressed into Upland Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) from Gossypium armourianum.

Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum, AD1) is the most important fiber crop for the world's textile industry. The genetic base of Upland cotton is narrow, and the introgression of germplasm from other species into Upland cotton can broaden its genetic diversity, including the introduction of new qualitative traits. The objectives of this study were to determine the inheritance, allelism, and linkage relationships of the red anther trait introduced into Upland from the red anther donor G. armourianum (D2-1) through crosses involving a synthetic tetraploid A1D2-1. After two generations of backcross

Generation of a multi-locus chicken introgression line to study the effects of genetic interactions on metabolic phenotypes in chickens.

Most biological traits are regulated by a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. By intercrossing divergent lines, it is possible to identify individual and interacting QTL involved in the genetic architecture of these traits. When the loci have been mapped, alternative strategies are needed for fine-mapping and studying the individual and interactive effects of the QTL in detail. We have previously identified, replicated, and fine mapped a four-locus QTL network that determines nearly half of the eightfold difference in body weight at 56 days of age between two divergent

Introgression of the Aedes aegypti Red-Eye Genetic Sexing Strains Into Different Genomic Backgrounds for Sterile Insect Technique Applications.

Aedes aegypti is an invasive mosquito species and major vector of human arboviruses. A wide variety of control methods have been employed to combat mosquito populations. One of them is the sterile insect technique (SIT) that has recently attracted considerable research efforts due to its proven record of success and the absence of harmful environmental footprints. The efficiency and cost-effectiveness of SIT is significantly enhanced by male-only releases. For mosquito SIT, male-only releases are ideally needed since females bite, blood-feed and transmit the pathogens. Ae. aegypti genetic sexi

Interspecific Hybridization in Pilot Whales and Asymmetric Genetic Introgression in Northern Globicephala melas under the Scenario of Global Warming.

Pilot whales are two cetacean species (Globicephala melas and G. macrorhynchus) whose distributions are correlated with water temperature and partially overlap in some areas like the North Atlantic Ocean. In the context of global warming, distribution range shifts are expected to occur in species affected by temperature. Consequently, a northward displacement of the tropical pilot whale G. macrorynchus is expected, eventually leading to increased secondary contact areas and opportunities for interspecific hybridization. Here, we describe genetic evidences of recurrent hybridization between pil

Zebu-taurine variation in Y chromosomal DNA: a sensitive assay for genetic introgression in west African trypanotolerant cattle populations.

Owing to increasing scientific and agricultural interest in the disease-resistant (trypanotolerant), indigenous cattle breeds of West and Central Africa, there is a need for a rational genetically based description of populations in the region. The greatest threat to the invaluable genetic resource represented by these animals is that of extensive genetic introgression of distantly related zebu cattle from northern populations which do not share their inherited tolerances. Southern blotting with a chromosome Y-specific probe, btDYZ-1 (locus DYZ1) is shown to be a sensitive assay to detect such

Cryptic genetic diversity in the mottled rabbitfish Siganus fuscescens with mitochondrial introgression at a contact zone in the South China Sea.

The taxonomy of the mottled rabbitfish Siganus fuscescens species complex has long been challenging. In this study, we analyzed microsatellite genotypes, mitochondrial lineages, and morphometric data from 373 S. fuscescens individuals sampled from the northern Philippines and Hong Kong (South China Sea, Philippine Sea and Sulu Sea basins), to examine putative species boundaries in samples comprising three co-occurring mitochondrial lineages previously reported to characterize S. fuscescens (Clade A and Clade B) or S. canaliculatus (Clade C). We report the existence of two cryptic species withi

Historical introgression from commercial meat-type ducks constitutes the common genetic basis of white plumage in egg-type duck breeds.

White plumage is an important economic trait in duck, but the genetic mechanism underlying white plumage in egg-type ducks remains unclear. In this study, white plumage individuals were obtained from a naturally segregating population of the grey plumage line of Shaoxing ducks. Cross families were constructed through reciprocal mating between white and grey-plumage lines for genetic mapping. Genome-wide association analysis mapped the white plumage trait to chromosome 13 and identified MITF as the sole candidate gene. Structural variation detection revealed an approximately 6.6 kb Gypsy insert

Role of genetic introgression in introducing mutant alleles in Bos indicus cattle and prevalence of lethal genetic disorders in Bos taurus × Bos indicus and Bos indicus cattle in India.

Fertility is an important trait associated with reproductive performance and animal welfare concern. Lethal alleles affect fertility through early embryonic death, abortions, and stillbirth depending on the genetic expression of the allele. Holstein Friesian and Jersey are two major Bos taurus breeds used widely for increasing milk yield along with purebreds of Bos indicus breeds like Gir, Kankrej, Sahiwal, and Tharparkar. In the present study, prevalence of lethal mutants in crossbred Holstein Friesian (CBHF, n = 2435), crossbred Jersey (CBJY, n = 2874), Gir (n = 3288), Kankrej (n = 593), Sah

Genetic Diversity Analysis of 96 Gossypium hirsutum-Gossypium barbadense Introgression Lines and Early Maturing Northern China Cotton Lines Using a 40K Liquid-Phase Chip.

Background: Genetic diversity and genetic differentiation between Gossypium hirsutum-Gossypium barbadense introgression lines (ILs) and early-maturing upland cotton lines are critical for resolving the core breeding contradiction in Xinjiang cotton region: narrow genetic basis of early-maturing cultivars and late maturity of ILs with superior fiber quality. Xinjiang is one of the major cotton-producing regions in China, and breeding high-quality early-maturing upland cotton adapted to local ecological conditions is essential for improving cotton yield and quality. However, the genetic relation
