Gram-negative endocarditis was uncommon in the past, accounting for 1% to 3% of cases. With the advent of antibiotics, immunosuppressive agents and narcotic abuse, the number has increased to 5% to 10% in the native valves and as high as 17% in the prosthetic valves, with Haemophilus species as the commonest aetiological agent, accounting for about 1% of the cases. We report a case of Haemophilus parainfluenzae endocarditis in a 39-year-old man who presented with heart failure and persistent fever. Echocardiography showed bi-leaflet mitral valve prolapse and severe mitral regurgitation. A smal

Seven young to middle-aged patients with Haemophilus parainfluenzae endocarditis are reported. Three patients had underlying heart disease and three patients had recent events predisposing for endocarditis. The clinical presentation was subacute or acute and new pathologic murmurs were uncommon. Diagnosis was prolonged because of difficulties in isolating the organism. Routine subculturing of blood cultures to chocolate agar with incubation in CO2 is recommended. A prominent complication, occurring in six patients, was major arterial occlusion secondary to emboli. Antibiotic control of infecti

Haemophilus influenzae is a frequent causal agent of serious infections in infants. Mostly these infections occur at the age of 3 months to 3 years. Reports about infections in the neonatal period were rare in the past and most of them were single cases. In the last years an increase of neonatal infections due to Haemophilus influenzae had been reported. In the period from June 1980 to January 1986 we saw 5 newborns with severe infections due to Haemophilus influenzae and one neonate infected by Haemophilus parainfluenzae. By discussion of our cases and by review of the literature we want to s

Urethritis, which is characterized by urethral inflammation, results from infectious, traumatic, and immune sources. Amongst the infectious causes, urethritis is usually acquired through sexual route and all show similar symptoms and signs. The present case is from India of a patient with urethritis caused by Haemophilus parainfluenzae transmitted through orogenital route.

Bacterial pericarditis is a rare disease in the era of antibiotics. Purulent pericarditis is most often caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, or Haemophilus influenzae. The number of H. parainfluenzae infections has been increasing; in rare cases, it has caused endocarditis. We report a case of purulent pericarditis caused by H. parainfluenzae in a 62-year-old woman who reported a recent upper respiratory tract infection. The patient presented with signs and symptoms of pericardial tamponade. Urgent pericardiocentesis restored her hemodynamic stability. However, within 24

Haemophilus parainfluenzae is a common inhabitant of the human upper respiratory tract of the normal oral microflora. We report three men who had been having unprotected sex with men (MSM) and subsequently acquired H. parainfluenzae urethritis, which was confirmed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis. Two men were treated with ceftriaxone and doxycycline, and the third man was treated with clarithromycin. All three patients responded to treatment. This case series highlights the potential role of H. parainfluenzae as a sexually transmitted genitourinary pathogen.

IgA nephropathy (IgAN), a common glomerular disease, is characterized by the presence of IgA deposits, predominantly in the glomerular mesangium, and by mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis (GN). Concerning its pathogenesis, several investigators suggest that the deposited IgA is an antibody to viral, bacterial, or dietary antigens. Thus the antibody is probably produced as part of the specific host immune response to various environmental antigens. Such reports strengthen the possibility of a relationship between mucosal immunity and the pathogenesis of IgAN. Nevertheless, attempts to i

BACKGROUND: Maternal-fetal transmission of Haemophilus influenzae (HI) and Haemophilus parainfluenzae (HPI) as well as characteristics of the infection in the neonate have been poorly described.
METHODS AND RESULTS: From 1982 to 1994 18 HI and 12 HPI from vaginal secretion of 30 women obtained intrapartum or immediately post partum were isolated. The following was observed in the 18 patients in whom HI was isolated: 1 abortion, 2 antepartum death, 1 post partum death, and 14 live neonates from whom 10 were suspect a infection with 5 cases being confirmed with isolation of HI in blood culture.

Haemophilus parainfluenzae was isolated from the bile specimens of 2 patients with acute cholecystitis. The strains were genetically unrelated by the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). The 2 H. parainfluenzae strains represented 11.7% of all positive bile cultures inoculated in blood culture bottles. The routine inoculation of bile specimens in media able to support growth of Haemophilus species should be considered.

A healthy 23-year-old man was admitted under the diagnosis of acute epiglottitis. Flexible fiber laryngoscopic examination showed a swollen epiglottis with an abscess. Microbiologic swab showed Haemophilus parainfluenzae, non-haemolytic Streptococcus and non-haemolytic Streptococcus salivarius. Only in 1984 a case of acute epiglottitis due to H. parainfluenzae has been described in the literature. Still, in this case we think that H. parainfluenzae was the most likely pathogen causing the abscess.

Haemophilus parainfluenzae was isolated from the urethral discharge of a man with urethritis. The patient responded favorably to treatment with amoxicillin. Although the facts suggest that this case of urethritis may have been caused by H. parainfluenzae, a possible etiologic role of other microorganisms is not ruled out.

Two homosexual men were colonized in the urethra with Haemophilus parainfluenzae nonsusceptible to ampicillin (MIC, 8 μg/ml), amoxicillin-clavulanate (MIC, 4 μg/ml), cefotaxime (MIC, 1.5 μg/ml), cefepime (MIC, 3 μg/ml), meropenem (MIC, 0.5 μg/ml), cefuroxime, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, and chloramphenicol (all MICs, ≥ 32 μg/ml). Repetitive extragenic palindromic PCR (rep-PCR) showed that the strains were indistinguishable. The isolates had amino acid substitutions in PBP3, L4, GyrA, and ParC and possessed Mef(A), Tet(M), and CatS resistance mechanisms. This is the first report

Haemophilus parainfluenzae endocarditis is characterized by great variation in the acuteness of presentation, difficulty in isolation of the pathogen, a 50% to 60% incidence of major arterial emboli, and variability of response to therapy. Prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) due to H parainfluenzae biotype II occurred in a 14-year-old girl with congenital heart disease and a Starr-Edwards mitral valve prosthesis. Management was complicated by a prolonged culture-negative period (eight days), intermittent bacteremia (only five of 15 positive blood cultures), an embolus to the right femoral arte

Infective endocarditis (IE) caused by Haemophilus parainfluenzae is a rare but serious condition if not diagnosed and treated promptly. In this article, we describe a patient with H. parainfluenzae IE who initially presented with non-specific symptoms but subsequently developed multiple sequelae of IE. The diagnosis of IE was made based on clinical, echocardiographic, radiological and microbiological findings. He was treated successfully with a mitral valve replacement along with 4 weeks of intravenous antibiotic therapy. Our case highlights the importance of obtaining a thorough history and a

Haemophilus parainfluenzae ( Hp ) is a Gram-negative, pleomorphic rod, highly prevalent and abundant as a commensal in the human oral cavity, and an infrequent extraoral opportunistic pathogen. Hp occupies multiple niches in the oral cavity, including the tongue dorsum, keratinized gingiva, and the supragingival plaque biofilm. As a member of the HACEK group, Hp is also known to cause infective endocarditis. Additionally, case reports have identified Hp as the causative agent of meningitis, septic arthritis, chronic osteomyelitis, septicemia, and a variety of other infectious diseases. Little

A young man presented early in the UK's second COVID-19 pandemic surge with a twelve-day history of fever, dry cough, breathlessness, myalgia and loss of smell and taste. His chest X-ray showed bilateral ground-glass opacities. He was treated for COVID-19 pneumonitis but covered for bacterial infection with antibiotics. He developed shock and respiratory failure, requiring vasopressors and continuous positive airway pressure. He improved but experienced transient visual disturbances and headache. Nasopharyngeal swabs and antibody tests for COVID-19 were negative. Blood cultures grew Haemophilu
