PURPOSE: Hand strength is a key component in human hand function, especially to those with strength-required jobs. To evaluate post-injury hand strength, this study was conducted to assess the predictability of hand injury severity scoring (HISS) system to hand strength after a period of recovery.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, 80 traumatic hand-injured subjects were recruited. Hand strength tests measured by dynamometers were performed by subjects in ways of palmar pinch, lateral pinch and cylindrical grip. The logistic regression models were used to evaluate the risk of poor hand str

Cortical activation is reduced when patients with focal dystonia perform movements that do not induce dystonic posturing. This finding suggests that the cortical drive to muscles may in some circumstances actually be reduced not increased, as suggested by basal ganglia models of dystonia as a hyperkinetic disorder. The purpose of this study was to examine flexor and extensor strength at the wrist (a clinically affected joint) and elbow (a nonclinically affected joint) in 18 patients with primary focal hand dystonia compared to matched control subjects. We measured peak torque from maximum volu

The purpose of this study was to determine whether a measurable decrease in isokinetic (dynamic) and isometric (static) hand strengths occurs in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) patients. Eighteen CTS patients and 20 healthy controls were included in the study. Isokinetic (eccentric and concentric) and isometric grip and pinch strengths were measured with a Biodex System 3 dynamometer (Biodex Medical System, Inc. New York). All strength measurements, except isometric and isokinetic (concentric/eccentric) three-point pinch and isokinetic (concentric) tip pinch, revealed statistically significant di

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of osteoarthritis on hand function in postmenopausal women. One hundred patients with hand OA and 70 healthy volunteers as controls were evaluated. Grip and pinch strength measurements and Dreiser's functional index were used for hand function. Pain was assessed by a visual analog scale, and tenderness was assessed by palpation and scored, depending on the severity of tenderness, as 0, 1 or 2. Heberden's and Bouchard's nodules and joint involvement were also recorded. The number of patients with only distal interphalangeal joint involvement wa

Hand grip strength (HGS) is a predictor of cognitive decline in aging. To understand the direct and indirect mechanisms underlying this association, we performed integrative analyses of genetic, cognitive, and autopsy data. A polygenic risk score for HGS (PRSHGS) was calculated in two independent studies of aging (total n = 25,227). Cross-sectional and longitudinal modeling, including mediation with physical activity, assessed the effects of PRSHGS on cognitive performance and postmortem neuropathology. In both cohorts, higher PRSHGS predicted better global cognitive performance (p = 7.77 × 10

The objective of this study is to evaluate hand grip strength (HGS) in patients on hemodialysis and to investigate associated factors (anthropometric characteristics, body composition, and quality of life). An observational study of 60 patients in one hemodialysis center (Filoxenia Dialysis center, Aigio, Greece) was conducted. Measures of HGS were performed with a hydraulic dynamometer (Saehan Corporation, South Korea) on the non-fistula hand before the hemodialysis session. Demographic and clinical data (dialysis start date, comorbidities, and etiology of chronic kidney disease) were collect

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a syndrome characterized by progressive and generalized loss of muscle mass and strength, observed to varying degrees in patients with various chronic conditions. In cirrhotic patients, it reflects protein-energy malnutrition due to metabolic protein imbalance and is associated with worsened prognosis and reduced post-liver transplantation survival.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the epidemiological distribution of diminished hand grip (HG) strength in cirrhotic patients at an outpatient clinic of Santa Casa de Misericórdia in Vitória-ES, Brazil, seeking its association with

BACKGROUND: Hand grip strength-measured by dynamometry-is an essential tool in nutritional assessment, particularly for detecting sarcopenia, even before weight or muscle mass loss is evident. In individuals with obesity, hand grip strength can help identify muscle weakness that may not be apparent due to high body mass. The purpose of this study is to describe the absolute and adjusted hand grip strength values for weight, height, body mass index (BMI), and appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM) in obese patients. It also aims to determine the prevalence of low muscle strength in this group

Grip strength has been used to evaluate the upper extremity functional status and clinical outcomes following upper extremity trauma or surgery. Understanding general recovery patterns of grip strengthening can be helpful in assessing the patients' recovery status and in assisting in preoperative consultations regarding expectations for recovery. We summarize related studies on grip strength measurement and recovery patterns in common hand conditions, including carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, triangular fibrocartilage complex injury, and distal radius fractures.

BACKGROUND: The intrinsic muscles of the hand are of interest in spinal cord injury (SCI) and other myelopathies, because they are innervated by the most caudal cord segments innervating the upper limb. In addition, abnormalities of the peripheral nervous system, such as peripheral nerve entrapments, often affect hand intrinsic muscle strength of SCI patients. Therefore, measuring hand intrinsic strength may allow for early diagnosis of neurologic decline.
METHODS: A method was developed for measuring strength of hand intrinsic muscles with a handheld myometer. With the use of a handheld myom

PURPOSE: To define the order and frequency of elongation in tendon junctions in extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL) to flexor digitorum profundus tendon transfer and its correlation to grip strength and lack of finger flexion.
METHODS: Forty-seven tetraplegic patients had surgery involving the reconstruction of finger flexion with the transfer of the ECRL in a total of 62 arms. During surgery metal markers were placed on both sides of the tendon-to-tendon attachment site. After surgery the distance between the markers was measured on radiographs. Any increase in the distance between the mar

This study developed biomechanical models for hand breakaway strength that account for not only grip force but also hand-handle frictional coupling in generation of breakaway strength. Specifically, models for predicting breakaway strength for two commonly-used handle shapes (circular and rectangular handles) and varying coefficients of friction (COF) between the hand and handle were proposed. The models predict that (i) breakaway strength increases with increasing COF and (ii) a circular handle with a 50.8 mm-diameter results in greater mean breakaway strength than a handle with a rectangular

BACKGROUND: Hand grip strength (HGS) is a widely used functional test for the assessment of strength and functional status in patients with cancer, in particular with cancer cachexia. The aim was to prospectively evaluate the prognostic value of HGS in patients with mostly advanced cancer with and without cachexia and to establish reference values for a European-based population.
METHODS: In this prospective study, 333 patients with cancer (85% stage III/IV) and 65 healthy controls of similar age and sex were enrolled. None of the study participants had significant cardiovascular disease or a

The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal scoring methods for measuring strength of the more-affected hand in patients with stroke by examining the effect of reducing measurement errors. Three hand-strength tests of grip, palmar pinch, and lateral pinch were administered at two sessions in 56 patients with stroke. Five scoring methods were used to present the strength scores. The smallest real difference was used to provide information on the measurement error. The smallest real difference percentage was used to compare the effect on minimizing the error. Using mean score of tests

AIM: We aimed to determine whether both hands should be tested for handgrip strength and whether it is necessary to perform repeated measurements in each hand.
METHODS: The data were obtained from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted from 2014 to 2018. The participants performed three trials of handgrip strength measurement for each hand alternately, with 60-s rest between the trials. From this pool of data, we included 23 901 participants aged ≥19 years who had completed surveys on the handgrip strength test, and obtained their medical history.
RESULTS: The d

BACKGROUND: Digit ratio (2D:4D) is a putative marker for prenatal testosterone and is correlated with performance in many sports. Low 2D:4D has been linked to strength but the evidence is mixed and strength is also influenced by mass, testosterone, and behavioural factors. It has been hypothesised that the 2D:4D-strength correlation may be strongest in challenge conditions when short-term changes occur in steroid hormones.
AIMS: We tested this suggestion in men.
STUDY DESIGN: We used a cross-over study design with a challenge (an aggressive video of rugby tackles) and control (a blank screen
