Vollenhoven (1864) presented a preliminary report and subsequently (Vollenhoven 1865) a detailed description of a new genus of pentatomoid true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera), Poseidon Vollenhoven, 1864, with a single included species, P. malayanus Vollenhoven, 1864; the species is therefore the type species of the genus by monotypy. The genus was placed into Scutelleridae by Vollenhoven (1864, 1865), but the latter taxon was defined broadly, in a way much different from the current concept of this family (see e.g. Rider et al. 2017); Stål (1876) transferred it into Plataspidae defined in the p

Urostylididae is a moderately species-rich family of phytophagous, mainly arboricolous pentatomoid true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) currently comprising 8 genera and 172 species (Rider et al. 2018). All described species occur in Asia, but undescribed taxa are present in Madagascar (P. Štys, pers. comm.). The present short paper was prompted by a recent contribution by Kim et al. (2018), who reviewed the species of the genus Urostylis Westwood, 1837, occurring in Korea, including the description of a purportedly new species, U. koreana Kim Jung, 2018. The identity of the latter species is cl

Triatoma brasiliensis is considered the main vector of Chagas disease in the semiarid zones of North-eastern Brazil. In this work, we describe the spatial pattern of defecation in T. brasiliensis and the spatial relationship of faeces with the shelters of these bugs. Afterwards, we analyse the attraction response of T. brasiliensis larvae to potential odour cues present in their dry faeces, to substances present in their cuticule (footprints) and to the dry faeces of Triatoma pseudomaculata. We show that faecal spots are deposited in a larger density inside the shelter than in the remaining ar

The Aeptini (Pentatomidae: Pentatominae) genus Menestheus Stål, 1868, is redescribed. The original misidentification of the type species for Menestheus is corrected by action of first reviser herein by establishing Paramenestheus nercivus non Dallas, 1851 sensu Stal (1868) = Menestheus cuneatus Distant, 1899 as the type species. Menestheus mcphersoni sp. nov. is described and illustrated. Characters separating the two species are discussed.

Laboratory tests play a central role in medicine, as they help to make diagnoses, assess prognosis and risk of disease, and monitor therapies, thus contributing to 70% of all medical decisions. This cross‑sectional function offers great potential for technologic and organizational innovation to influence health care as a whole. In recent years, a variety of technologies have emerged and entered the field of medical research, or even medical care. A new generation of biosensors enables laboratory tests to be carried out at the point of care and allows for faster medical decisions. Modern device

A new genus, Graziasternum gen. nov., with two new species, Graziasternum graziae sp. nov. and Graziasternum joceliae sp. nov. are described. According to external thoracic and genital structures, this new genus is considered to be the closest extant relative known to the genus Placosternum Amyot Serville. Discussion of its possible phylogenetic position based on structure comparison, with the discussion on the importance of the characteristics of the thoracic sterna, the genital structures with other genera or groups of genera that share similar structures is given. Aradidae are known for their remarkably long stylets, coiled at rest in the anterior part of the head. However, previous reports indicated that at least some species lacked stylets during the first nymphal instar. A more detailed examination of Aradus betulae 1st-instar nymphs showed that their mandibular and maxillary stylets are abnormally short, not coiled, improperly interlocked, and clearly non-functional. The anteclypeus is relatively small and its internal diverticulum, which accommodates the stylet coil in the older stages, is vestigial. In contrast, the labium, labrum, food canal, and

The neo-X and neo-Y sex chromosomes of Dysdercus albofasciatus represent a unique model for the study of early stages of sex chromosome evolution since they retained the ability to pair and recombine, in contrast to sex chromosomes in most Heteroptera. Here we examined structure, molecular differentiation, and meiotic behaviour of the D. albofasciatus neo-sex chromosomes. Two related species with the ancestral X0 system, D. chaquensis and D. ruficollis, were used for a comparison. In D. albofasciatus, 2 nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were identified on the neo-X chromosome using fluorescen

Previous results have shown frequent movements of crevice-dwelling bats between different shelters. Low roost fidelity of some dwelling bat species reduces the reproductive success of ectoparasites. The question of whether high densities of bat bugs (Cimex pipistrelli) represent a cost for crevice-dwelling bats (Pipistrellus pygmaeus), resulting in roost switching, has been examined. Sessions in a volary equipped with two bat boxes were carried out. One of the boxes was loaded with ectoparasites (low and high densities), the other served as a control and new roost for bats, which left the load

Cotton plants were infested with brown stink bug, Euschistus servus (Say), to define cotton boll age classes (based on heat unit accumulation beyond anthesis) that are most frequently injured during each of the initial 5 wk of flowering. Bolls from each week were grouped into discrete age classes and evaluated for the presence of stink bug injury. Brown stink bug injured significantly more bolls of age class B (approximately 165-336 heat units), age class C (approximately 330-504 heat units), and age class D (approximately 495-672 heat units) during the initial 3 wk in both years and in week 5

Euschistus Dallas is distributed throughout the Western Hemisphere and is composed of 67 species in three subgenera: Euschistomorphus Jensen-Haarup, Lycipta Stl, and the nominate subgenus. Euschistus (Euschistus) includes several economically important species. Due to the lack of a phylogenetic analysis for the subgenus Euschistus, its groupings are based primarily on male genitalia. In this paper, the following Nearctic taxa that were first grouped together by Stl (1872), namely E. ictericus (Linnaeus), E. variolarius (Palisot de Beauvois), E. servus servus (Say), E. servus euschistoides (Vol

The lace bug family Tingidae comprises more than 2600 described species in 318 genera that are classified into the subfamilies Tinginae (about 2500 species and 300 genera), Cantacaderinae, and Vianadinae. We provide data on karyotypes of 16 species belonging to 10 genera of the tribes Tingini and Acalyptaini (Tinginae) studied using conventional chromosome staining and FISH. The species of Tingini possess 2n = 12A + XY, whereas those of Acalyptaini have 2n = 12A + X(0). FISH for 18S rDNA revealed hybridization signals on one of the medium-sized bivalents in species of both tribes. FISH with a

The new species Paravelia ameliae (Heteroptera: Veliidae) is described based on macropterous specimens from the Department of Putumayo, in the Amazonian region of Colombia. The new species can be distinguished from all congeners mainly by the bicolored pronotum (dark-brown on the anterior two-thirds and light-brown posteriorly); the absence of distinct pruinosity or silvery patches on the anterior lobe of the pronotum; the basal macula of the forewing small and roughly ovate; the grasping comb of the male fore tibia occupying more than half of its length; the male hind femur with a row of 15 s

The genus Acrophyma Bergroth currently contains two species, the Andean A. cumingii (Westwood) and the Neotropical A. bicallosa (Stål). The examination of types and new material revealed that among the Neotropical species the Brazilian population differs from the Colombian, and the first one belongs to a new species in this group. A morphological analysis of the genus indicated the Neotropical species are different from the Andean species. According to the current most used generic characters in acanthosomatids, Neotropical species should be placed in a new genus. This is also supported by bio

Cryopreservation protocols have been developed for eggs of Diptera, Lepidoptera, and Hymenoptera; however, for Heteroptera, such as Podisus nigrispinus Dallas, 1851 (Pentatomidae), no procedures have been described yet. The objective of this study was to evaluate the processes of dechorionation and permeabilization on the viability of eggs of P. nigrispinus with different embryonic ages. In the laboratory, embryos of 24, 48, 72, and 96 h of age were submitted to sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, isopropyl, and hexane solutions for dechorionation and permeabilization. The experiment was ca
