THE FIRST EUROPEANS to discover Japan were Portuguese traders who arrived in 1542. Fifteen years later, the Portuguese Jesuit priest and surgeon Luis De Almeida (1525-1583) founded the first Western hospital in Japan, for the care of lepers, syphilitics, and orphans. Because the hospital had a negative influence on the spread of Christianity, the Jesuits closed it in 1586. During the Tokugawa Shogunate (1600-1868), when Japan was secluded from the rest of the world, the only foreign physicians allowed to enter Japan were those employed by the Dutch factory at Dejima in Nagasaki. Jean Rey, a physician from The Bugue, a little town near Bergerac, published, in 1630, a book entitled "Essays" in which he explained the increase of the mass of lead, when it was strongly heated, by the fixation of a part of the air. This revolutionary publication was not received by the European scientists, because the Father Mersenne, "the secretary of learned Europe", was not able to repeat his experiments. Between 1774 and 1775, Pierre Bayen, who was a military apothecary, published his Works concerning the "precipitate per se", for us HgO, showing that when this compound was destroyed by

These two apothecaries of the XVIth century of Pharmacy in Paris were outstanding personalities. Nicolas Houel founded a charity in the south of Paris at Saint-Marcel suburb: The House of Christian Charity. It was a philanthropic organization composed of a chapel, an orphanage, a hospital, an apothecary's shop and a medicinal plants garden called Le Jardin des apothicaires. This institution is at the origin of the future Paris Pharmacy College (1777) and of the Paris School of Pharmacy (1803). This apothecary was also an artist, a poet, the author of artistic and scientific works. He wrote thr

Considering the morphological findings in egyptian mummies at the beginning of the 20th century, atherosclerotic lesions were also apparent in pharaoh mummies more than 3500 years ago. Hippokrates (469-377 b.c.) described the sudden (cardiac) death, whereas Erasistratos had documented the typical claudication intermittens symptoms of peripheral arterial disease approximately 300 b.c. Later on in 1575, Fallopius observed severe pathological findings in arteries which he has characterized as a 'degeneration to bones', suggesting the presence of calcified atherosclerotic lesions. The relation bet

FACED WITH THE TERRIBLE MORTALITY OF THE EPIDEMICS DURING THE LAST YEARS OF THE MING DYNASTY: (1368-1644) AND THE INEFFICACY OF THE TREATMENTS APPLIED, WU YOUXING: (ca 1580-1660), the author of the Wenyilun (Treatise on warm factor epidemics), completed in 1642, proposed a new etiological explanation of these diseases, with a highly critical attitude towards his predecessors. Reception to the book was mixed; it sometimes encountered opposition due to the audacity of some of Wu Youxing's conceptions, but also, most likely, to the discrepancy between the author's assertions and the failures in a

At the end of the 15th century syphilis appeared in Europe as a devastating epidemic. For nearly four centuries mercury was regarded as a remedy of first-rate importance along with guaiac and potassium iodide. In the early 20th century, two new substances were added to syphilis therapeutics, namely arsenobenzol and bismuth. The absence of treponemal serum tests and the erroneous attribution of the positive Wassermann reaction exclusively to Treponema pallidum infection resulted in prolonged and non-proven effective treatments. In 1943 John Mahoney introduced penicillin, revolutionizing the tre

During early modernity, medico-legal concerns with timing puberty gave way to physiological and medical-hygienic concerns with pubertal timing. Sixteenth- and seventeenth-century medical-jurisprudential tracts isolated rare cases of conception before the legal marriage age. Scattered reports of "monstrously" early menarche and "prodigious" male puberty were offered from the latter half of the seventeenth century. Tied to excess heat, moisture, plethora and climate since antiquity, in the second half of the eighteenth century pubertal timing attracted sustained commentary regarding the purporte

Polycystic kidneydisease (PKD) is one of the most common inheritedkidneydiseases causing end stage renal disease. Although it has been in existence with humanity, it was defined in 18th century. The most detailed observations on PKD have been written after the disease of Stephen Bathory, the King of Poland. He had fatigue and chest pain accompanied by unconsciousness within a few days after a hunting trip, and died within 9 days, at the age of 53 years in 1586. Surgeon Jan Zigulitz described the cysts in his kidneys as large like those of a bull, with an uneven and bumpy surface during the mum

Prosper Meniere is widely credited with the first description of endolymphatic hydrops. Meniere's discovery was made possible through a combination of technical and scientific advances, a supportive scientific environment, and a keen intellect able to put the pieces of a puzzle together. Meniere's novel concept, however, that vertiginous disorders were caused by a pathologic process in the semicircular canals was not accepted overnight, but realized only after another 70 years of scientific debate. This article traces the story of endolymphatic hydrops from its anatomical beginnings to its cur
