Human lung injury following exposure to humic substances and humic-like substances.

Among the myriad particles the human respiratory tract is exposed to, a significant number are distinctive in that they include humic substances (HS) and humic-like substances (HULIS) as organic components. HS are heterogeneous, amorphous, organic materials which are ubiquitous occurring in all terrestrial and aqueous environments. HULIS are a complex class of organic, macromolecular compounds initially extracted from atmospheric aerosol particles which share some features with HS including an aromatic, polyacidic nature. As a result of having a variety of oxygen-containing functional groups,

Humic substances. Part 1: Dissolved humic substances (HS) in aquaculture and ornamental fish breeding.

GOALS, SCOPE AND BACKGROUND: Changing environmental conditions and handling stress are well known to cause chronic or acute stress situations in fish with subsequent infections. These requires a therapy by means of antibiotics and chemicals. In contrast to the huge number of pathogens, only a few substances are permitted for application as therapeutics in German aquaculture. Hence, there emerges an urgent need for highly effective and residueless alternatives. MAIN FEATURES: The prophylactic stimulation and training of the defense system of fish by alternative approaches becomes increasingly

Activation of persulfate by humic substances: Stoichiometry and changes in the optical properties of the humic substances.

Persulfate activation through electron transfer from humic substances (HS) was investigated. Persulfate consumption in the presence of standard HS and HS model compounds linearly correlated with the phenol contents of the HS. Redox-active carbonyl groups such as aromatic ketones and quinone also contributed to persulfate consumption by donating electrons while being reduced. Phenols activated persulfate through direct electron transfer from the phenolate forms but reduced ketones activated persulfate through reactions between their organic radicals and persulfate. Persulfate was activated more

Effects of Microbes from Coal-Related Commercial Humic Substances on Hydroponic Crop Cultivation: A Microbiological View for Agronomical Use of Humic Substances.

Here, coal-related humic substances (HSs) were examined to confirm whether sterilization treatments induce their inferior ability to stimulate lettuce in hydroponic cultivations. Interestingly, a drastic reduction in both lettuce biomass and microbial colony-forming units of the crop culture solutions was observed when the autoclaved HSs were treated. Some microbial genera (i.e., Bacillus and Aspergillus) identifiable in the bare HS-treated hydroponic systems were able to be isolated by direct inoculation of bare HS powders on conventional microbial nutrients, supporting that flourishing micro

The Antiinflammatory Properties of Humic Substances: A Mini Review.

Humic substances are effective in the suppression of delayed type hypersensitivity, rat paw oedema, a graft-versus-host reaction and contact hypersensitivity in rats. They reduce the C-reactive protein levels of patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee and the wheel and flare reaction of patients suffering from hay fever. They have also been described as cardioprotective and pro-angiogenic. Toxicity studies have indicated that potassium humate is safe in humans up to a daily dosage of 1 g/kg, whereas fulvic acid is safe in humans up to a daily dosage of 1.8 g per adult. The antiinfla

Valorisation of anaerobic digestate to nutrients and humic substances.

Nutrient-rich product fractions were produced from abundant, yet currently chemically under-utilized nutrients-containing feedstock, residual digestate formed during anaerobic digestion (AD). The objective of this research was to experiment individually three sub-processes, i.e., precipitation of organic humic substances and phosphorus from the digestate reject water, liberation of reject water nitrogen as ammonia gas during the lime treatment and recovering it with membrane contactor (MC), and finally novel utilization of ammonia for leaching nitrogen-enriched organic substances from the dige

Roles of humic substances redox activity on environmental remediation.

Humic substances (HS) as representative natural organic matters and the most common organic compounds existing in the environment, has been applied to the treatment and remediation of environmental pollution. This review systematically introduces and summarizes the redox activity of HS for the remediation of environmental pollutants. For inorganic pollutants (such as silver, chromium, mercury, and arsenic), the redox reaction of HS can reduce their toxicity and mobilization, thereby reducing the harm of these pollutants to the environment. The concentration and chemical composition of HS, envi

Crucial role of humic substance type in Cr(VI) reduction by humic substance-Fe(III) coprecipitates but not in adsorption.

Wetlands exhibit a self-purification effect on Cr(VI) owing to the adsorption and reduction capabilities of their humic substance (HS)-Fe(III) coprecipitates. However, the similarities and differences in the adsorption and reduction of Cr(VI) by different types of HS-Fe(III) coprecipitates remains unknown. In this study, fulvic acid (FA)- and humic acid (HA)-Fe(III) coprecipitates were synthesized with initial C/Fe ratios ranging from 0.25 to 15, and a comparative analysis of their adsorption and reduction effects was conducted. The results showed that FA- and HA-Fe(III) coprecipitates exhibit

Supporting the process of removing humic substances on activated carbon.

This study is focused on biosorption process used in water treatment. The process has a number of advantages and a lot of research has been done into its intensification by means of ultrasonic modification of solutions. The study carried out by the authors leads to the conclusion that sonication of organic solutions allows for extension of the time of operation of carbon beds. For the analysis of the results obtained during the sorption of humic substances (HS) from the solution dependencies UV/UV₀ or DOC/DOC₀ were used. In comparative studies the effectiveness of sorption and sonosorption (UV

Sedimentary humic substances in the northern Adriatic sea (Mediterranean sea).

Humic compounds were determined in sediments collected in an area of the Adriatic sea receiving fresh waters from the river Po. Sediment cores (10 cm) were sectioned into four layers which were analysed separately for redox potential (Eh), total phosphorus (TP), total organic carbon (TOC), humic (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) content. The structure of HA and FA was also investigated. The results showed that the TOC and TP content decreased from the coast to the open-sea stations. Humic and fulvic acid concentrations were also inversely correlated to the distance from the coast. Moreover, the humic

Effect of functional groups of humic substances on uf performance.

The role of different functional groups present in humic substances on the membrane flux is unclear. This study is undertaken to (1) separate the carboxyl and phenolic groups from a humic solution, and (2) evaluate the effect of each fractionated humic substances on the ultrafiltration (UF) performance. A weak-base amine resin was used for the adsorption (pH 7) and the subsequent desorption (pH 13) of the phenolic groups from a commercial humic solution. These fractions were evaluated qualitatively (via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) and quantitatively (titration); they were further

Effect of humic substances on phosphorus removal by struvite precipitation.

Humic substances (HS) are a major fraction of dissolved organic matters in wastewater. The effect of HS on phosphorus removal by struvite precipitation was investigated using synthetic wastewater under different initial pH values, Mg/P molar ratios and HS concentrations. The composition, morphology and thermal properties of harvested precipitates were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. It showed that inhibition effect of HS reached its maximum value of 48.9% at pH 8.0, and decreased to below 10% at pH>9.0

Order of functionality loss during photodegradation of aquatic humic substances.

The time course photodegradation of the Nordic aquatic fulvic and humic acids and Suwannee River XAD-4 acids subjected to UV irradiation with an unfiltered medium pressure mercury lamp was studied by liquid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance. Photodecarboxylation was a significant pathway in all cases. Decreases in ketone, aromatic, and O-alkyl carbons were observed throughout the course of the irradiations, whereas C-alkyl carbons resisted photodegradation. Peaks attributable to the low-molecular-weight photodegradation products bicarbonate, formate, acetate, and succinate grew in intensity

Changes of AhR-mediated activity of humic substances after irradiation.

Humic substances (HS) and natural organic matter (NOM) are natural organic compounds ubiquitous in the environment. However, some studies indicate that both HS and NOM can act as xenobiotics, e.g. induce hormone-like effects in fish, amphibians and invertebrates. Molecules of these substances contain a number of aromatic rings and conjugated double bonds--the so called chromophores. Irradiation of dissolved HS and NOM can lead to a series of photochemical reactions which can act on these substances itself, or on other substances present in aquatic environment along with HS and NOM such as e.g.

Iron oxyhydroxide catalyzes production of artificial humic substances from waste biomass.

Production of artificial humic substances (AHS) from waste biomass will contribute to environmental protection and agricultural productivity. However, there is still a lack of a faster, more efficient and eco-friendly way for sustainable production. In this study, we proposed a method to accelerate the production of AHS from cotton stalks by mild pyrolysis and H2O2 oxidation in only 4 hours, and investigated the formation of AHS during biomass transformation. We found that the process increased the aromatic matrix and facilitated biomass transformation by enhancing the depolymerization of lign

Analog synthesis of artificial humic substances for efficient removal of mercury.

A cost-effective artificial humic substances (humic acid-modified biochar, HA-BCs) is fabricated by using conventional hydrothermal-assisted pyrolysis technique, and then is considered as a promising adsorbent material for removing mercury ions from aqueous solution. Artificial humic acid (A-HA), humic acid-modified biochar (HA-BCs) are analyzed by using SEM, EA, XRD, FTIR, XPS, and BET techniques. The removal efficiency of mercury ions was greater than 95% after reaching the adsorption equilibrium. Meanwhile, the adsorption kinetics coincided with the pseudo-second-order model and the isother

Sorption of tetracycline and chlortetracycline on K- and Ca-saturated soil clays, humic substances, and clay-humic complexes.

Tetracycline (TC) and chlortetracycline (CTC) are used extensively for growth promotion and therapeutic purposes in livestock production. The sorption of TC and CTC on clays, humic substances (HS), and clay-humic complexes (clay-HC) derived from two agricultural soils was quantified using dilute CaCl2 (Ca) and KCI (K) as background solutions. In all systems, the soil components sorbed > 96% of added tetracyclines. Strongest sorption was observed for clays, followed by HS, and then clay-HC. Greater sorption by the Ca systems than the K systems and decreased sorption with increasing pH suggests

Interaction of Antibiotics and Humic Substances: Environmental Consequences and Remediation Prospects.

The occurrence and distribution of antibiotics in the environment has received increasing attention due to their potential adverse effects on human health and ecosystems. Humic substances (HS) influence the mobility, reactivity, and bioavailability of antibiotics in the environment significantly due to their interaction. As a result, HS can affect the dissemination of antibiotic-resistance genes, which is one of the main problems arising from contamination with antibiotics. The review provides quantitative data on the binding of HS with fluoroquinolones, macrolides, sulfonamides, and tetracycl

Influence of biochar addition on the humic substances of composting manures.

Application of biochar (10% v/v) to a manure composting matrix was investigated to evaluate its effect on the chemical composition of humic substances during the composting process. The characteristics of the humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) fractions were analyzed in compost mixtures originating from two different manures (poultry manure (PM) and cow manure (CM)). The C contents of HA and FA from the manure compost/biochar blends (PM+B and CM+B) were higher than those from PM and CM, with an enhanced recalcitrant fraction, as determined by thermogravimetric analysis. Influence of humic substances on the photolysis of aqueous pesticide residues.

The present work investigated the direct and indirect photolysis of pesticide residues (atrazine, imazaquin, iprodione), in aqueous solutions and under UV-visible radiation (280-480nm). Different kinds of humic substances (HS) were added to samples in order to evaluate their behaviour as possible photocatalysts and their effect on the photolysis of pesticides. The fulvic acids were purchased from the International Humic Substances Society, and they were added to samples in concentrations ranging from 1 to 150 mgl(-1). Titanium dioxide was used as the photocatalyst, in concentration ranging fro
