Examination of a new mobile intermittent pneumatic compression device in healthy adults.

OBJECTIVE: Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) is an alternative method of compression treatment designed to compress the leg and mimic ambulatory pump action to actively promote venous return. This study explores the efficacy of a new portable IPC device on tissue oxygenation (StO2) in two sitting positions. METHOD: In this quantitative, healthy single cohort study, participants were screened and recruited using Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q, Canada). Participants attended two separate one-hour sessions to evaluate StO2 in an upright chair-sitting position and in a lo

Early application of an intermittent pneumatic compression device assists dilation of radiocephalic fistulas.

INTRODUCTION:: Radiocephalic fistulas are the preferred type of arteriovenous fistula due to their advantageous location. However, radiocephalic fistula maturation has historically been inferior to brachiocephalic fistulas. Research indicates that intermittent compression may aid in forearm vein dilation. Early use of a compression device may assist radiocephalic fistula maturation. OBJECTIVES:: This prospective, randomized, placebo controlled study evaluates device safety and the effect of intermittent compression on vein size of radiocephalic fistulas and brachiocephalic fistulas. Effect of Intermittent Pneumatic Compression Device on Limb Edema in Immediate Postoperative Stroke Patients.

Introduction  Limb edema is a common complication in postoperative stroke patients, often caused by immobility and impaired lymphatic drainage. This swelling can negatively affect recovery. Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) devices, which enhance circulation by applying sequential pressure to the limbs, have shown promise in improving venous return and reducing edema in other patient groups. However, their effectiveness in managing limb edema in immediate postoperative stroke patients remains unclear. This study aims to assess the impact of IPC devices on reducing edema in this patient

Venous thromboembolism prophylaxis after head and spinal trauma: intermittent pneumatic compression devices versus low molecular weight heparin.

Although there are alternative methods and drugs for preventing venous thromboembolism (VTE), it is not clear which modality is most suitable and efficacious for patients with severe (stable or unstable) head/spinal injures. The aim of this study was to compare intermittent pneumatic compression devices (IPC) with low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) for preventing VTE. We prospectively randomized 120 head/spinal traumatized patients for comparison of IPC with LMWH as a prophylaxis modality against VTE. Venous duplex color-flow Doppler sonography of the lower extremities was performed each week

Assessing Effectiveness and Compliance Barriers of Intermittent Pneumatic Compression Devices in Preventing Venous Thromboembolism After Femoral Fracture Surgery.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a frequent complication following femoral fracture surgery. While intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) devices serve as an effective mechanical prophylaxis, patient compliance is often suboptimal. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of IPC in preventing VTE after femoral fracture surgery and to analyse the key factors influencing patient compliance. METHODS: This retrospective study included 213 patients with femoral fractures who underwent surgical treatment at Ningbo No.6 Hospital between December 2021 and December 2024. Bas

A systematic review of contemporary randomized controlled trials for treatment of lower extremity lymphedema by intermittent pneumatic compression devices.

OBJECTIVE: Observational trials have suggested that intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) devices reduce lymphedema (LED) volume and improve patient-reported outcomes, but this type of trial is subject to bias. Systematic reviews (SRs) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) provide the highest evidentiary strength for examining the impact of a therapeutic intervention and are important for evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Few existing SRs, however, include recent RCTs and only a smaller number address LED of the lower extremities (LELED). Therefore, we conducted a SR based on PI

Acute oxygenation changes on ischemic foot of a novel intermittent pneumatic compression device and of an existing sequential device in severe peripheral arterial disease.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) improves haemodynamics in peripheral arterial disease (PAD), but its effects on foot perfusion were scarcely studied. In severe PAD patients we measured the foot oxygenation changes evoked by a novel intermittent IPC device (GP), haemodynamics and compliance to the treatment. Reference values were obtained by a sequential foot-calf device (SFC). METHODS: Twenty ischemic limbs (Ankle-Brachial Index = 0.5 ± 0.2) of 12 PAD patients (7 male, age: 74.5 ± 10.8 y) with an interval of 48 ± 2 hours received a 35 minute treatment in supine position w

Comparison of clinical and physiological efficacies of different intermittent sequential pneumatic compression devices in preventing deep vein thrombosis: a prospective randomized study.

BACKGROUND: There are few comparative studies about the optimal method of pneumatic compression to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The aim of this prospective randomized study was to compare venous hemodynamic changes and their clinical influences between two graded sequential compression groups (an alternate sequential compression device [ASCD] vs. a simultaneous sequential compression device [SSCD]). METHODS: In total, 34 patients (68 limbs) undergoing knee and spine operations were prospectively randomized into two device groups (ASCD vs. SSCD groups). Duplex ultrasonography examinatio

Treatment of Nonreconstructable Critical Limb Ischemia With Ischemic Wounds Utilizing a Noninvasive Intermittent Pneumatic Compression Device Monitored With Fluorescence Angiography.

INTRODUCTION: Critical limb ischemia (CLI) is a leading cause of lower extremity amputation. When CLI is identified, revascularization should be performed if possible. When options for revascularization do not exist, use of a noninvasive intermittent pneumatic compression device (NPCD) can be considered. OBJECTIVE: Presented here are 2 cases of patients with nonreconstructable CLI at risk for limb loss who were serially assessed with indocyanine green fluorescence angiography (ICGFA) to determine the effects of NPCD use on local tissue perfusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Both patients were tre

Discontinued Use of Outpatient Portable Intermittent Pneumatic Compression Devices May Be Safe for Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis in Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty Using Low-Dose Aspirin.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a rare, but serious complication following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Current VTE guidelines recommend pharmacologic agents with or without intermittent pneumatic compression devices (IPCDs). At our institution, both 81-mg aspirin (ASA) twice a day (BID) and portable IPCDs were previously prescribed to TKA patients at standard risk for VTE, but the IPCDs were discontinued and patients were treated with ASA alone going forward. The aim of this study is to determine if discontinued use of outpatient IPCDs is safe and does not increase the rate of VTE or any ot

Should intermittent pneumatic compression devices be standard therapy for the prevention of venous thromboembolic events in major surgery? Protocol for a randomised clinical trial (IMPOSTERS).

INTRODUCTION: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a recognised postsurgical risk. Current prevention methods involve low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), graduated compression stockings (GCS), and intermittent pneumatic compression devices (IPCDs). Australian guidelines, commonly adopted by surgeons, recommend LMWH with GCS and/or IPCDs. IPCDs pose clinical risks, increase care burden, are poorly tolerated, and are costly single-use plastic items. Utilising only LMWH and GCS, without IPCDs, could be more practical, patient-friendly, and cost-effective, with added environmental benefits. METHODS:

The effect of portable intermittent pneumatic compression devices in preventing lower limb deep vein thrombosis in patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery: A quasi-experimental multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Patients who undergo major orthopedic surgery are at high risk for lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) devices are among the most commonly used mechanical prophylaxis methods. With advances in research and continuous device optimization, portable IPC devices have gradually emerged. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the preventive effect, comfort, and satisfaction of a portable intermittent pneumatic compression device on postoperative lower extremity DVT in patients following major orthopedic surgery. OBJECTIVE: To investig
