Interpersonal dysfunction in individuals high in chronic worry: relations with interpersonal problem-solving.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal dysfunction has been proposed as an important maintenance factor in chronic worry and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Perceptions of problems and the problem-solving process as threatening, and unhelpful (e.g. avoidant, impulsive) problem-solving styles are implicated in worry and have also been suggested to be associated with dysfunctional interpersonal styles. AIMS: The present study assessed the relationships between interpersonal dysfunction and problem-solving orientation, approach, and effectiveness in a sample of individuals high in chronic worry and inves

Social anxiety and interpersonal perception: a social relations model analysis.

Cognitive models of social phobia posit that an individual's negative beliefs about the way he or she is perceived by others (metaperceptions) are a core feature of the disorder. The social relations model () was used to analyze interpersonal perception data collected following unstructured social interactions in 62 socially anxious (SA) and 62 not socially anxious (NSA) individuals. Using this model, the interpersonal perceptions were analyzed to evaluate whether pathological levels of social anxiety are associated with self-perceptions, metaperceptions, and perceptions from others. Early interpersonal relations: experience of four treatment methods in phobic women.

One hundred and three phobic women not suitable for insight-oriented psychotherapy were randomized to either therapist-directed prolonged exposure in vivo (PE), supportive therapy of dynamic type (ST), relaxation therapy (R), or basal therapy (B). History taking was lengthy and included ratings of early interpersonal relations. These were combined into a scale with a range from 0, least favourable, to 13 most favourable. The patients filled in an inventory with regard to their experience of the therapist and the therapy at the beginning of the treatment, at midtreatment, and at the end of trea

The dynamic relations among interpersonal behaviors: a test of complementarity and anticomplementarity.

On the basis of the positions of behaviors relative to one another in the interpersonal circle, the principles of complementarity and anticomplementarity specify how people's behaviors influence one another in interpersonal interactions. Pairs of undergraduate women (1 subject, N = 80, and 1 confederate) collaborated for 16 min to create and agree on stories for two pictures. Confederates performed scripted roles that emphasized one of eight interpersonal behaviors. Behaviors were coded into eight categories, and the relative effect of each confederate behavior on each subject behavior was det

Motivational determinants of interpersonal distress: how interpersonal goals are related to interpersonal problems.

This study aimed to link interpersonal goals with interpersonal problems and psychological distress and to investigate changes in these variables during an inpatient psychotherapeutic treatment. Two hundred and fifty-eight patients treated in a psychosomatic hospital completed the German versions of the circumplex scales of interpersonal values, the inventory of interpersonal problems, and the outcome questionnaire before and at the end of their treatment. Patients initially reported a strong need for bonding in the CSIV. Especially interpersonal goals related to avoidant, submissive, and altr

Dynamic longitudinal relations between binge eating symptoms and severity and style of interpersonal problems.

Despite wide recognition of the importance of interpersonal problems in binge eating disorder (BED), the nature of this association remains unclear. Examining the direction of this longitudinal relationship is necessary to clarify the role that interpersonal problems play in the course of binge eating problems, and thus to specify treatment targets and mechanisms. This study aimed to articulate the bidirectional, longitudinal associations between BED and both the general severity of interpersonal problems as well as warm and dominant interpersonal styles. Severity and styles of interpersonal p

A Rorschach investigation of defensiveness, self-perception, interpersonal relations, and affective states in incarcerated pedophiles.

Rorschach protocols of 60 incarcerated men who met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed. [DSM-IV]; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) criteria for Pedophilia were compared to those of 60 incarcerated men with no history of sex offenses (matched for age, education, and race). Comprehensive System Rorschach variables (Exner, 1991) were selected based on both psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral models of pedophilia. Pedophiles' Rorschachs (a) contained significantly more responses and were more likely to reveal signs of (b) anxiety and helplessness, (c) painfu

Quality of object relations versus interpersonal functioning as predictors of therapeutic alliance and psychotherapy outcome.

The purpose of the study was to compare an interview measure of quality of object relations to questionnaire and interview measures of recent interpersonal functioning with respect to the prediction of therapeutic alliance and psychotherapy outcome. The sample consisted of 64 patients who had received approximately 20 sessions of short-term individual psychotherapy within a controlled, clinical-trial investigation. Ratings of therapeutic alliance were provided independently by the patient and the therapist after each session. Outcome measures, which were provided by three sources (patient, the

Differences between school classes in preschoolers' psychosocial adjustment: evidence for the importance of children's interpersonal relations.

We examined differences between school classes with respect to three aspects of psychosocial adjustment at school, namely the extent that children in the class liked to play with each other, the number of teacher-reported behaviour problems, and children's feelings of wellbeing at school. The sample consisted of 1282 4- to 5-year-olds from 94 school classes and 51 schools, but due to nonresponse actual sample sizes were somewhat smaller for most analyses. Multilevel analyses showed that on average 87% of the variance was at the child level, 11% at the class level, and 3% at the school level. T

Trauma-Related Disgust in Veterans With Interpersonal Trauma.

Although traditionally conceptualized as an anxiety disorder, variability in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be explained by individual differences in peri- or posttraumatic disgust. We examined relationships between disgust reactions and other trauma-related symptoms in 100 veterans with a history of interpersonal trauma and gender differences in these variables. We also evaluated the mediating role of posttraumatic disgust and guilt in the relationship between peritraumatic disgust and PTSD symptoms. Participants completed cross-sectional self-report questionnaires of trauma-related

Improving interpersonal skills in therapists: A waitlist-controlled trial of facilitative interpersonal and relational skills training.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated a brief deliberate practice-based training program ('Facilitative Interpersonal and Relational Skills Training') aimed at enhancing therapists' facilitative interpersonal skills (FIS) in a sample of experienced clinicians. METHODS: Using a waitlist-controlled design, two groups of therapists (N = 68) sequentially received a two-day workshop followed by two booster sessions over two months. They completed performance-based FIS assessments at three time points, along with self-reported FIS and therapist self-efficacy. Piecewise mixed-effects models tested pre-pos

Relational context shapes interpersonal coordination in naturalistic interaction.

Interpersonal coordination - the temporal coupling of movement between interactants - is widely considered to support social interaction, with laboratory studies demonstrating that greater coordination is associated with increased rapport, bonding, and positive affect. However, most of the evidence for these psychosocial benefits comes from tightly controlled interactions involving unfamiliar partners. Whether these findings generalise to naturalistic, real-world interaction remains largely unexplored. The present study examined interpersonal coordination and its psychosocial correlates in fri

Meta-analysis of interpersonal discrimination and health-related behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: This article comprehensively examines the relationship between interpersonal discrimination (IPD) and health-related behavior (HB), expanding upon Pascoe and Richman's (2009) meta-analysis and research synthesis. METHOD: One hundred and twenty one articles providing zero-order correlations (or information allowing their calculation) between perceptions of IPD and a variety of HB outcomes were coded and analyzed using a random-effects meta-analysis model. One hundred and fifty six articles examining this relationship using multivariate models were also coded and summarized within a

Conversational Self-Focus in Adolescent Friendships: Observational Assessment of an Interpersonal Process and Relations with Internalizing Symptoms and Friendship Quality.

Although youth with internalizing symptoms experience friendship difficulties, surprisingly little is known about their problematic interpersonal behaviors. The current observational study identifies a new construct, conversational self-focus, defined as the tendency to direct the focus of conversations to the self and away from others. Results indicated that youth with internalizing symptoms were especially likely to engage in self-focus when discussing problems with friends and that doing so was related to their friends perceiving the relationship as lower in quality, particularly helping. Interpersonal relating and voice hearing: to what extent does relating to the voice reflect social relating?

The experience of hearing voices (auditory hallucinations) has been construed as that of relating to an interpersonal 'other'. This preliminary study utilized Birtchnell's (1996, 2002) theory of relating to investigate the hypothesis that people who hear voices relate to the voices and to people within their social environment in similar ways. A correlational design was adopted and 27 people provided information about the characteristics of their voice-hearing experience, relating to the voice and relating socially. Significant correlations were found between relating to the voice and relating

Interpersonal Family Dynamics Relate to Hippocampal CA Subfield Structure.

Social environments that are extremely enriched or adverse can influence hippocampal volume. Though most individuals experience social environments that fall somewhere in between these extremes, substantially less is known about the influence of normative variation in social environments on hippocampal structure. Here, we examined whether hippocampal volume tracks normative variation in interpersonal family dynamics in 7- to 12-year-olds and adults recruited from the general population. We focused on interpersonal family dynamics as a prominent feature of one's social world. Given evidence tha

Interpersonal Violence-Related Trauma Among South African Children.

INTRODUCTION: Injuries account for a major portion of disability-adjusted life years in children globally, and low-and middle-income countries are disproportionally affected. While injuries due to motor vehicle collisions and self-harm have been well-characterized in pediatric populations in South Africa, injuries related to interpersonal violence (IPV) are less understood. Our study aims to characterize patterns of injury, management, and outcomes for pediatric patients presenting with IPV-related injuries in a South African trauma center. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of trau

Interpersonal maladjustment as predictor of mothers' response to a relational parenting intervention.

In previous work, Luthar and Suchman (2000, Development & Psychopathology, 12, 235) reported results of a randomized clinical trial testing the efficacy of the Relational Psychotherapy Mothers' Group (RPMG) for methadone-maintained mothers. In this extension, we examined maternal interpersonal maladjustment as a predictor of differential response to RPMG versus standard drug counseling (DC). We predicted that RPMG mothers with high levels of interpersonal maladjustment would improve on parent-child relationship indices, whereas DC mothers with high levels of interpersonal maladjustment would s
