Macular Pigment Carotenoids and Bisretinoid A2E.

Lutein (L), zeaxanthin (Z), and meso-zeaxanthin (MZ) are the three macular pigments (MP) carotenoids that uniquely accumulate in the macula lutea region of the human retina. L and Z are obtained by humans through dietary intake. The third MP, MZ, is rarely present in diet, and its abundance in the human fovea is due to the metabolic conversion of dietary L by the retinal pigment epithelium's RPE65 enzyme. The major functions of MP in ocular health are to filter high-intensity, phototoxic blue light and to act as effective antioxidants for scavenging free radicals. The pyridinium bisretinoid, N…

Reduced macular pigment in vitamin A deficiency retinopathy.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) can lead to rod then cone dysfunction. We evaluated fundus autofluorescence (FAF) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) images in patients with confirmed VAD. Five patients (10 eyes) were included, with VAD related to Crohn's disease (n=4) and deficiency of fat soluble vitamins of unknown cause (n=1). After vitamin A supplementation, mean visual acuity improved from 0.2 to 0.1 logMAR, and the initially observed ellipsoid and interdigitation zone abnormalities on OCT imaging improved, supporting previous reports. In contrast, we describe a lack of normal foveal hypoa

Pigment epithelial detachments in age related macular degeneration.

Pigment epithelial detachments (PEDs) form a heterogeneous group of lesions of diverse prognosis and treatment that have in common the pathologic elevation of the retinal pigment epithelium plane and its detachment from the underlying layers. Although PEDs are a common finding in age-related macular degeneration, especially in its exudative forms, the diagnostic characterization and prognostic estimation of these lesions is a clinical challenge that necessarily requires a multimodal imaging approach. This review presents the clinical characteristics of the different groups of PED, their diagno

The distribution of macular pigment in human albinos.

This study investigated the variation in density of macular pigment across the central retina in normal and albino subjects. Luminance profiles were measured using a fundus camera and digital video techniques. The normal group had pigment spatial distributions consistent with previous studies. The albinos had no variation in absorbance across the central retina.

Acquired Macular Pigmentation of Unknown Etiology.

Acquired macular pigmentation of unknown etiology is a new umbrella term that encompasses a group of diseases that, while having similar clinical and histological features, their true entities are controversial, and a global consensus regarding these conditions is still lacking. The conditions comprised by the term are ashy dermatosis, erythema dyschromicum perstans, lichen planus pigmentosus, and idiopathic eruptive macular pigmentation. In this review, we compare the clinical and histological features of these conditions that comprise aquired macular pimgentation of unknown etiology, as well…

Macular pigment optical density before and after cataract extraction.

PURPOSE: Psychophysical methods of measuring macular pigment (MP) use comparisons of short- and midwave light in the fovea and parafovea to derive optical density estimates. This light must pass through the crystalline lens before absorption by the MPs can occur. The effect of lens absorption on these measures has not been adequately determined. The present study assesses the influence of lens absorption on MP measurements by comparing MP optical density (MPOD) measured before and after cataract extraction. METHODS: MPOD was measured using flicker photometry in free view at 458 nm with a 1 de…

Spontaneous combined full-thickness retinal and pigment epithelium macular hole in age-related macular degeneration.

The authors describe a case of combined full-thickness retinal and pigment epithelium macular hole that spontaneously developed in the right eye of an 86-year-old woman with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). One year prior, the patient had been diagnosed with drusenoid pigment epithelium detachment (PED) in the right eye and geographic atrophy in the left eye. Full-thickness macular hole associated with PED and spontaneous rip of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) associated with macular hole have been previously reported in eyes with exudative AMD. However, the authors are unaware of

Evidence of macular pigment in the central macula in albinism.

PURPOSE: Albinism represents a spectrum of disorders with diminished to absent amounts of melanin pigmentation including the posterior segment of the eye. Macular pigment (MP) consists of two main carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, concentrated in the macula. MP serves as blue light absorbent, antioxidant, and may reduce chromatic aberration and glare. It remains unclear if albinos have detectable MP. The purpose was to investigate the distribution of MP in albino patients with psychophysical and imaging techniques. METHODS: MP was measured at the eccentricity of 0.5° by heterochromatic flic…
