Permanent panhypopituitarism associated with maternal deprivation.

A 15-year-old boy with a history of maternal deprivation since age 2 years had severe growth retardation and panhypopituitarism. After one year in an appropriate foster home, there were no changes in his growth rate and pituitary function. This appears to be a case in which panhypopituitarism, probably secondary to maternal deprivation, was not corrected after placement in an appropriate environment. The normal increase in the concentration of serum thyroid stimulating hormone after the administration of protirelin (Thypinone) suggested that the primary abnormality was in the hypothalamic cent…

Maternal social deprivation and risk of preeclampsia.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the use of an indicator of the cumulative effect of multiple community-level risk factors on risk of preeclampsia, a morbid maternal hypertensive disorder. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of 41,834 singleton pregnancies from four urban hospitals. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We used the social deprivation index (SDI), which is a composite of seven neighborhood demographic characteristics collected by the American Community Survey. SDI quartile 1 (Q1) is the least deprived area and Q4 is the most deprived. A modified Poisson regression model with robust e

Maternal deprivation affects goat kids' stress coping behaviour.

Maternal deprivation early in life has been shown to disrupt neonates' development. Nevertheless, separating the young animals from their dams soon after birth remains a common practice in dairy farm husbandry. This study investigated the effects of different rearing conditions on goat kids' stress coping abilities. Twenty female kids were raised together with their dams ('dam-reared') in a herd composed of other lactating goats and kids, while twenty female kids were separated from their dams three days after birth and reared together with same-age peers ('artificially-reared') and visually s…

Early maternal deprivation retards neurodevelopment in Wistar rats.

A single 24 h period of maternal deprivation (MD) in rats has been shown to induce, in adulthood, a number of abnormalities in brain and behaviour that also occur in patients with schizophrenia. However, the short-term behavioural effects of MD have not been studied in detail. Since patients with schizophrenia are characterized by a retardation of normal development, we aimed in the present study to investigate the development of control rats and rats that were exposed to MD on postnatal day 9. Compared to control animals, MD rats showed (1) a reduction in body weight, (2) an increased in reve…

Maternal deprivation masking as mental retardation in children.

A child with delayed development and behavioral abnormalities presents a clinical challenge to the physician caring for children. Understanding of normal milestones and behavior, and the importance of the environment are necessary in making an accurate diagnosis and planning treatment. Maternal deprivation may produce a picture that initially suggests mild mental retardation. Differentiation is possible by a closer look at the child's developmental and behavioral characteristics and some associated specific physical features.

How early maternal deprivation changes the brain and behavior?

Early life stress can adversely influence brain development and reprogram brain function and consequently behavior in adult life. Adequate maternal care in early childhood is therefore particularly important for the normal brain development, and adverse early life experiences can lead to altered emotional, behavioral, and neuroendocrine stress responses in the adulthood. As a form of neonatal stress, maternal deprivation/separation is often used in behavioral studies to examine the effects of early life stress and for modeling the development of certain psychiatric disorders and brain patholog…

Maternal exercise during pregnancy: Sex-specific impacts on offspring memory and maternal deprivation effects.

Maternal deprivation (MD) is a well-established paradigm used to study the effects of early-life stress on offspring brain development and behavior, particularly memory. Maternal exercise (ME) during pregnancy has been shown to influence offspring brain development and behavior. Our study examined whether ME protocols-stop, start, reduce, or maintain running during pregnancy-could protect offspring from MD-induced memory deficits and impact hippocampal oxidative balance. Initially, adult Wistar female rats were divided into five groups: non-exercised mothers (NE), mothers who exercised only be…

Sex-dependent alterations in response to maternal deprivation in rats.

We review here our latest results regarding short- and long-term effects of a neonatal maternal deprivation (MD) stress [24h at postnatal day (PND) 9] on diverse psychoneuroimmunoendocrine parameters, pointing out the existence of numerous sexual dimorphisms. Behavioral changes observed in MD animals might be at least in part attributable to neurodevelopmental effects of MD-induced elevated corticosterone levels. Our findings of short-term effects of MD on hippocampal and cerebellar neurons and glial cells appear to support this hypothesis. However, it is important to note that these cellular …

Maternal protein deprivation enhances the teratogenicity of ochratoxin A in mice.

Teratogenic effects of the mycotoxin ochratoxin A (OA) were investigated in protein-deprived mice. Pregnant CD-1 mice were assigned to control (26%), 16%, 8%, and 4% protein diet groups and treated by gavage with 0, 2, or 3 mg/kg OA on gestation day 8 (plug = day 1). They were killed on day 18 and subjected to teratological examination. OA treatment decreased prenatal survival, particularly at the two lowest dietary protein levels. OA at the higher dose also inhibited fetal growth in all groups, with a similar effect at the low dose in the 16% and 4% protein groups. Gross malformations associa

Are early childhood experiences overrated? A reassessment of maternal deprivation.

The opinion that early maternal deprivation (absence of mother, lack of stimulation, multiple caregivers) results in lasting damage to intellectual and emotional development is generally accepted. In a real-time longitudinal study 137 children, part of a representative sample of Kt. Zürich (Switzerland) who spent the first years in residential nurseries, were investigated at age 12.6 +/- 8 months and again at age 14 years. In IQ and education this group at follow-up was not different from the general population. The children were no less popular than a control group of classmates. There were, …

Maternal ethnicity and socioeconomic deprivation: influence on adverse pregnancy outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relative importance of ethnicity and socioeconomic deprivation in determining the likelihood and prevalence of placentally derived composite of adverse pregnancy outcomes (CAPO) and composite of severe adverse pregnancy outcomes (CAPO-S). METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective cohort study of data obtained in a tertiary maternity unit. Data regarding ethnicity and socioeconomic deprivation (as measured with indices of multiple deprivation) were collected for 13 165 singleton pregnancies screened routinely in the first trimester for pre-eclampsia using the F

Maternal deprivation induces depressive-like behaviours only in female rats.

Maternal deprivation (MD) has been developed to study the effects of early adverse experiences on behaviour and neurobiology. It has been proposed to represent a potential animal model of major depression. The purpose of our study was to examine the responses induced by MD in male and female adult Long-Evans rats in tasks designed to explore depressive-like behaviours (forced swimming test (FST), repeated open space swim test (OSST), sucrose solution consumption) and in the novel object recognition and object location tasks. A consistent sexual dimorphism was observed in the responses of male …

Maternal social deprivation and preterm birth: The PreCARE cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal exposure to unfavourable social conditions is associated with a higher rate of perinatal complications, such as placental vascular pathologies. A higher risk of preterm birth (PTB) has also been reported, and variations across studies and settings suggest that different patterns may be involved in this association. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between maternal social deprivation and PTB (overall and by phenotype). METHODS: We analysed 9365 patients included in the PreCARE cohort study. Four dimensions (social isolation, insecure housing, no income from work and a

Maternal protein deprivation: sexually dimorphic programming of hypertension in the mouse.

Epidemiological data in humans and experiments in laboratory animals have demonstrated that the developmental programming of hypertension may occur as a consequence of dietary manipulations during pregnancy. Surprisingly, there is a scarcity of data regarding the development of hypertension as a consequence of a maternal low-protein diet (MLPD), particularly in the mouse. Furthermore, the role of sex in developmental programming is not well understood. We used FVB/NJ mice, because of their value in genetic/mechanistic analysis, to test the hypothesis that a MLPD during gestation leads to the s

Brief maternal deprivation of rats reduces hepatic mixed function oxidase activities.

Deprivation of pups from mother and sibs for 3 min daily from day 5 to day 41 of life reduced activities of 4 hepatic mixed function oxidases (MFO) expressed per mg protein in male rats compared to unhandled control rats. These decreases, though generally small, 22.4% and under, reached statistical significance for the substrates aminopyrine, benzphetamine and ethoxycoumarin. This handling procedure did not consistently affect the inductive response to phenobarbital. Previously ignored as a source of variability in response to xenobiotics, "handling" appears from these results to merit further
