Congenital absence or loss of the ocular globe during childhood causes psycho-social and cosmetic disorders and compromise the normal development of the orbital region. The literature relating to congenital or acquired etiology, due to trauma or disease, demonstrates the necessity of prevention and early detection in order to minimize the sequelae and disturbances in orbital growth. Installation of an eye prosthesis is essential to the rehabilitation process, so as to produce satisfactory development of the region. In order to characterize a profile of the child patient with this condition, a

Maxillofacial prosthesis (MFP) can be defined as the art and science of esthetic and functional reconstruction of the facial bones, art because it uses hand-crafted and empirical rules, science because of its technical rigorism and its integration in medicine. MFP aims to multidisciplinary rehabilitate patients presenting with cutaneous and underlying structures defects, It also allows for functional speech and swallowing rehabilitation related to temporo-mandibular joint disorders. Whatever the origin, (traumatic, infectious ortumoral), surgical treatment of these TMJ disorders is usually not

PURPOSE: Patients with maxillofacial deformities always seek for aesthetic prosthesis. Recently, three-dimensional printing technologies have been used for dental treatments on such patients.
CASE REPORT: A 24-year-old man reported to the Department of Prosthodontics for replacement of his missing right ear induced by a trauma. A magnet-retained auricular prosthesis was planned for the patient. Three-dimensional scanning was performed on the healthy side by using a three-dimensional optical scanner and the data were mirrored. The mirrored image was then imported to a software and a virtual mo

Radiation-induced sarcoma represents an exceptional rarity in the head and neck region. The treatment is surgical excision with negative margins and follow-up. After surgery, reconstruction of the defects can be accomplished either surgically or prosthetically. Implant-retained maxillofacial prostheses may offer an acceptable solution. In this report, a large facial defect resulting from radiation-induced leiomyosarcoma was reconstructed with implant-retained prosthesis. A patient with a large facial defect resulting from tumor surgery presented for reconstructive treatment. The primary tumor

It is difficult to make conventional impressions for maxillofacial prostheses in patients with complicated anatomical structures. In addition, even after fabrication, multiple adjustments are usually needed due to its complex morphology. This article describes a combined conventional and digital workflow for fabricating maxillofacial prostheses. An intraoral scanner was used to obtain three-dimensional (3D) data on the interim prosthesis and oral cavity of the patient with a mandibular defect. The surface data of the interim prosthesis was 3D printed with acrylic to fabricate an occlusal recor

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the critical functional unit in the human stomatognathic system. Damage of the TMJ causes orofacial dysfunction and secondary jaw deformities, leading to seriously decreased quality of life in patients. The TMJ prosthetic replacement is an important treatment method for severe joint destruction because of its remarkable advantages compared with other methods. In recent years, this technique has gradually attracted wide attention in China, but it has not been popularized on a large scale in our country because of several limitations. Thus, in this study, the

The maxillofacial prosthesis for surgical treatment of loss of bony, dental or mucosal substance in children has the advantage of allowing postponement of therapy until growth is terminated or any other favorable period. In addition, the temporary reconstitutions possible by their use often provide, apart from esthetic results, an effective action physically and mentally on the mainly labile growth.

In this study, analytic models were used to simulate marginal resection in the area of the second premolar to the second molar region, and the mechanical effects on the mandible of residual bone mass, a maxillofacial prosthesis, and a reconstruction plate were evaluated by three-dimensional finite element analysis. As residual bone mass decreased, maximum principal stress increased near the anterior ramus of the mandible, and maximum shear stress increased at the anterior buccal region of the resected area. In the mandible with a maxillofacial prosthesis, the maximum principal stress distribut

When surgery is performed to remove aggressive cancer, the extent of the lesion commands the amount of tissue removed. The removal of extensive tissue such as crucial landmarks complicates prosthesis design. This clinical report describes the prosthetic reconstruction of a patient who underwent tumor resection of the upper lip, anterior portion of the nasal cavity, and cartilaginous portion of the nasal septum, as well as subsequent radiation therapy. The prosthetic rehabilitation consisted of magnetic attachments, eyeglasses, and silicone adhesives. The applied technique effectively covered t

An implant-retained maxillofacial overdenture with a pharyngeal speech aid prosthesis was fabricated for a patient with a nonsurgically treated cleft palate who was unable to achieve velopharyngeal closure. Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing were used to fabricate a metal-reinforced prosthesis using the Ivotion Denture System and subtractive manufacturing with geographic guides. Magnetic attachments were incorporated to improve the retention and stability of the prosthesis. Masticatory function, deglutition, and esthetics were found to be improved at the 6-month follow-up.

Rehabilitation of maxillofacial defect patients is a challenging task. The most common prosthetic treatment problem with such patients is, getting adequate retention, stability, and support. In cases of large maxillofacial defect, movement of the prosthesis is inevitable. The primary objectives in rehabilitating the maxillofacial defect patients are to restore the function of mastication, deglutition, speech, and to achieve normal orofacial appearance. This clinical report describes maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation of large midfacial defect including orbit along with its contents, zygom

Fabricating maxillofacial prosthesis can be challenging. Placement of implants can have a dramatic effect on the stability and retention of the prosthesis in patients. This article provides clinical retrospective analysis of osseointegrated implants used for maxillofacial reconstruction. Patient charts and radiographs were reviewed to determine implant status, stability of prosthesis, and masticatory and speech function. Of the 104 implants placed, there were 4 implant failures. The overall survival rate for implants in this patient population was 96.1%. The stability of maxillofacial prosthes

Maxillofacial prosthetics is an important and recognized sub-discipline of prosthodontics that forms a key component of postgraduate training programmes. General dentists have a role to play in the management of maxillofacial defect patients even though treatment usually requires a multidisciplinary approach in an institutional environment. Maxillofacial prosthetic cases frequently present with complex histories but simple patient goals. The conservatively managed implant-retained auricular prosthesis, speech aid prosthesis and orbital prosthesis cases described in this report were completed i

Prosthetic rehabilitation is an option available for patients with extensive maxillofacial defects with the ability to restore esthetics and function. The surgical procedure can result in anatomical and functional sequelae leading to functional, psychological and aesthetic disorders. This clinical case report describes the unique and highly-specialized fabrication method of an oral and facial prosthesis for a patient with a near total maxillectomy, excision of upper lip, rhinectomy and radiotherapy for treatment of an extensive malignant neoplasm. Four carefully placed zygomatic implants were

The reconstruction of maxillofacial bone defects by the intraoperative modeling of implants may reduce the predictability of the esthetic result, leading to more invasive surgery and increased surgical time. To improve the maxillofacial surgery outcome, modern manufacturing methods such as rapid prototyping (RP) technology and methods based on reverse engineeing (RE) and medical imaging data are applicable to the manufacture of custom-made maxillary prostheses. After acquisition of data, an individual computer-based 3D model of the bony defect is gernerated. These data are tranferrred into RE
