Dependence of urban air pollutants on meteorology.

Dependence of air pollutants on meteorology is presented with the aim of understanding the governing processes pollutants phase interaction. Intensive measurements of particulate matter (PM10) and gaseous materials (e.g., CO, NO2, SO2, and O3) are carried out regularly in 2002 at 14 measurement sites distributed over the whole territory of Great Cairo by the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency to assess the characteristics of air pollutants. The discussions in this work are based upon measurements performed at Abbassiya site as a case study. The nature of the contributing sources has been in

Pneumothorax and the environment: A systematic review of the impact of air pollution and meteorology, and a meta-analysis on meteorology factors.

A relationship between the occurrence of spontaneous pneumothorax (SP) and meteorological factors has been observed but with contradictory results. The objectives of this systematic review was to synthesis the current body of evidence to the relationships between the occurrence of SP and environmental determinants such as meteorological factors and air pollutants. We conducted a systematic search of MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane Library and gray literature from inception up to 31st December 2020, to find published scientific research articles based on the following eligibility criteria: original s

Long-distance observations: integrating atmospheric optics, meteorology, and citizen science.

Long-distance observations (LDOs)-the visual or photographic documentation of terrestrial objects from distances often exceeding the geometric horizon-are an emerging interdisciplinary field. However, a robust scientific basis that integrates empirical records with atmospheric physics is currently lacking. This study establishes such a methodology by combining a systematic typology of LDOs with a quantitative analysis of their controlling physical factors. The methodology integrates numerical simulations with analyses of photographic case studies from dedicated observer communities, including

Ambient air pollution, meteorology, and COVID-19 infection in Korea.

The outbreak of novel pneumonia coronavirus disease has become a public health concern worldwide. Here, for the first time, the association between Korean meteorological factors and air pollutants and the COVID-19 infection was investigated. Data of air pollutants, meteorological factors, and daily COVID-19 confirmed cases of seven metropolitan cities and nine provinces were obtained from 3 February 2020 to 5 May 2020 during the first wave of pandemic across Korea. We applied the generalized additive model to investigate the temporal relationship. There was a significantly nonlinear associatio

Response of formaldehyde to meteorology in Beijing: Primary or secondary contributions.

During high-temperature periods in summer, formaldehyde (HCHO) levels increase due to secondary production. However, recent studies have also shown a rise in the HCHO concentration in winter, but the underlying cause remains unclear. Here, HCHO observations in urban Beijing were conducted, the impact of meteorological differences between warm and cold seasons to HCHO concentrations was investigated. Additionally, the positive matrix factorization model was applied to the source apportionment of HCHO, with a focus on changes during pollution events. The results indicated that, during warm seaso

Can genomics and meteorology predict outbreaks of legionellosis in urban settings?

Legionella pneumophila is ubiquitous and sporadically infects humans causing Legionnaire's disease (LD). Globally, reported cases of LD have risen fourfold from 2000 to 2014. In 2016, Sydney, Australia was the epicenter of an outbreak caused by L. pneumophila serogroup 1 (Lpsg1). Whole-genome sequencing was instrumental in identifying the causal clone which was found in multiple locations across the city. This study examined the epidemiology of Lpsg1 in an urban environment, assessed typing schemes to classify resident clones, and investigated the association between local climate variables an

Understanding phenology and forest meteorology dynamics in a South American pharmacological tree.

Protium heptaphyllum (Burseraceae) is a native species widely studied for its secondary metabolites, yet with limited records regarding its ecology and conservation. To address this gap, the present study describes the vegetative and reproductive phenology of the species in an Atlantic Forest fragment in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, examining the relationship between phenological events and meteorological variables. Twenty adult individuals (twelve females and eight males) were monitored biweekly over two years. The phenophases assessed included leaf senescence, leaf flushing, flower buds, flo

Highs and lows, ups and downs: Meteorology and mood in bipolar disorder.

Seasonal variation of manic and depressive symptoms is a controversial topic in bipolar disorder research. Several studies report seasonal patterns of hospital admissions for depression and mania and variation in symptoms that appear to follow a seasonal pattern, whereas others fail to report such patterns. Differences in research methodologies, data analysis strategies, and temporal resolution of data may partly explain the variation in findings between studies. The current study adds a novel perspective to the literature by investigating specific meteorological factors such as atmospheric pr

Associations between meteorology and COVID-19 in early studies: Inconsistencies, uncertainties, and recommendations.

Meteorological variables, such as the ambient temperature and humidity, play a well-established role in the seasonal transmission of respiratory viruses and influenza in temperate climates. Since the onset of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a growing body of literature has attempted to characterize the sensitivity of COVID-19 to meteorological factors and thus understand how changes in the weather and seasonality may impede COVID-19 transmission. Here we select a subset of this literature, summarize the diversity in these studies' scopes and methodologies, and show the

Responses of PM2.5 and O3 concentrations to changes of meteorology and emissions in China.

Tremendous efforts have been made to reduce the severe air pollution in China since 2013. However, the annual and peak fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations during severe events in winter did not always reduce as expected. This is partially due to the inter-annual variation of meteorology, which affects the emission, transport, transformation, and deposition processes of air pollutants. In this study, the responses of PM2.5 and ozone (O3) concentrations to changes in emission and meteorology from 2013 to 2015 were investigated based on ambient measurements and the Community Multi-Scal

Compound fire-meteorology extremes drove megacity air pollution during the 2024 South American fire season.

Extreme air pollution increasingly threatens major cities, yet the relative roles of urban emissions and biomass-burning smoke transported across multiple spatial scales remain difficult to quantify. Here, we investigate three multi-day pollution extremes that affected São Paulo State during the 2024 South American fire season, when daily fine particulate matter (PM2.5) reached 80-100 μg m-3 in the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo. We combined surface observations, aerosol optical thickness measurements, backward trajectories, and controlled global atmospheric simulations differing only in fire-

Counterintuitive PM2.5 Increases During COVID-19 Lockdown in Ilo, Peru: Coastal Meteorology and Cardiovascular Implications.

The COVID-19 pandemic created a natural experiment to assess air quality responses to emission reductions, yet evidence from Latin American coastal industrial cities remains scarce. This study examined how meteorological variability modulated the effects of COVID-19 restrictions on air quality in Ilo, a medium-sized coastal industrial city in southern Peru (~67,000 inhabitants). We analyzed daily concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, NO2, O3, and SO2 across six pandemic phases (January-December 2020) using multiple linear regression, variance decomposition, and Random Forest models. A health impact a

Long-term assessment of PM10 and SO2 in northwestern Türkiye: meteorology, inversions, and transboundary transport.

This study provides a comprehensive long-term assessment of air quality in Balıkesir, northwestern Türkiye, focusing on the spatiotemporal variability of PM10 and SO2 during 2013-2023. The analysis integrates pollutant observations with ERA5 reanalysis meteorological data to examine seasonal and diurnal variations, long-term trends, and the role of temperature inversions and atmospheric circulation in shaping pollution episodes. Results indicate that both pollutants reach their highest concentrations in winter due to intensified domestic heating and stagnant meteorological conditions, with tem

Influence of local and regional Mediterranean meteorology on SO₂ ground-level concentrations in SE Spain.

This work presents the results of a 4-year study on sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) ground-level concentrations in an area of southeastern Spain, the L'Alacantí region, where the cement industry is important and coke use extends to other industries as well. The main source of SO(2) emissions in the area was found to be a the Lepold cement plant (one of the two cement plants in the area). The high levels of SO(2) probably extend back to 1920 when this plant began operations. Both local and Mediterranean-scale meteorological processes influence the SO(2) ground-level concentration and together explain th
