Microcystis genotypes in a tropical freshwater lake: Discovery of novel MIB-producing Microcystis with potentially unique synthesis pathway.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a threat to freshwater systems over the world due to the production of hepatotoxins like microcystin (MC), and nuisance taste and odour (T&O) compounds like 2-methylisoborneol (MIB). While MCs are known to cause detrimental effects to both water quality and human health, MIB is only reported to cause aesthetical problems. In this study, we investigated a tropical, urban lake that was experiencing persistent MC and MIB events. Although it was dominated by Microcystis blooms, analysis revealed that the toxigenic Microcystis were not the only species driving the MC

Toxic concentrations of metronidazole to Microcystis protocystis.

Antimicrobials are among the most commonly used drugs and have become a class of contaminants with great environmental importance. Metronidazole is an antimicrobial used for the therapeutic management of several human diseases. The toxicity of antimicrobials on aquatic species may affect sensitive microorganisms and reduce metabolic processes. Cyanobacteria is a group of organisms that are of great ecological importance in aquatic environments. Studies indicate that cyanobacteria are very sensitive to some antimicrobials. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the effects of metronidazole cont

Toxicity of Microcystis aeruginosa K-139 strain.

Toxicity of the cells of a newly established axenic Microcystis aeruginosa K-139 strain to mice was studied. LD50 of the cells harvested in the mid-log phase was 7.3 mg/kg. The organs of acute dead mice were examined histopathologically. The blood congestion and necrosis of the parenchymal cells around the central veins in the liver were observed, but other organs seemed to be normal. The liver damage was confirmed by the tests of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) activities in the sera of the mice after the injection with the K-139 cells. Catalytic versatility of lipoxygenase from Microcystis aeruginosa.

Lipoxygenases (LOXs) catalyze the regio- and enantioselective addition of molecular oxygen to polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), yielding fatty acid hydroperoxides (FAHPs) with significant industrial relevance. Bacterial LOXs are of particular interest due to their broad substrate range and distinct regio- and enantioselectivity profiles. In the current study, we characterized the biochemical properties and product scope of a newly identified LOX from the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa (Ma-LOX). Our results demonstrate that Ma-LOX exhibits a strong preference for linoleic acid (LA) an

Cadmium spurred Microcystis aeruginosa to unleash more toxic metabolites.

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs), normally dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa, pose a threat to aquatic ecosystems due to the release of various harmful metabolites. Cadmium (Cd), a heavy metal commonly found in surface water and sediments, often coincides with cHABs in eutrophic lakes. However, the ecotoxicological effects of Cd on M. aeruginosa and the potential for combined toxicity are not yet fully understood. In this study, we determined the effective concentrations of cadmium from 10 % (EC10) to 50 % (EC50) for M. aeruginosa based on cell density inhibition. We then conducte

Effects of Microcystis on development of early life stage Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes): Comparative toxicity of natural blooms, cultured Microcystis and microcystin-LR.

Freshwater cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) caused by algae in the genus Microcystis have been increasing in frequency and severity in recent decades. Microcystis blooms threaten aquatic organisms through effects associated with the rapid increase of biomass and the production of the hepatotoxin microcystin (MC) by toxic strains. Among fish, effects of blooms are likely to be more severe for early life stages, and physiological impacts on this life stage could significantly impact recruitment and fish populations. This study explores the effects of Microcystis blooms on the deve

H2O2-induced enhancement of astaxanthin accumulation in Microcystis aeruginosa.

Astaxanthin is a naturally derived antioxidant with great market value. A huge biomass of cyanobacteria is harvested during water blooms salvage and treatment, of which Microcystis aeruginosa is a typical species with astaxanthin biosynthetic capacity. To promote the high-value utilization of the salvaged cyanobacteria after enhancing their astaxanthin accumulation via H2O2 treatment, the cellular proliferation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) content, photosynthetic performance, astaxanthin biosynthesis, as well as related gene expression in M. aeruginosa were assayed under H2O2 stress. Enhanced coagulation of Microcystis aeruginosa using titanium xerogel coagulant.

Cyanobacterial blooms are prevalent globally and present a significant threat to water security. Titanium salt coagulants have garnered considerable attention due to their superior coagulation properties and the absence of metal residue risks. This paper explored the influencing factors in the coagulation process of titanium xerogel coagulant (TXC), the alterations in cell activity during floc storage, and the release of cyanobacterial organic matters, thereby determining the application scope of TXC for cyanobacterial water treatment. The findings indicated that at a TXC dosage of 8 mg Ti/L,

Allelopathic inhibition of the extracts of Landoltia punctata on Microcystis aeruginosa.

To study the allelopathic effect of the extracts of Landoltia punctata, the changes of cell density of Microcystis aeruginosa were measured. The anti-algae allelopathic effect of different organic solvent extracts of L. punctata was evaluated, and the physiological, biochemical indexes were determined to discuss the mechanism of algal inhibition. The results showed that the petroleum ether, dichloromethane and ethyl acetate extracts showed various inhibitory effects on M. aeruginosa. Among them, ethyl acetate extract was the most strongly allelopathic part with the semi-effect concentration(EC

Application and reactivation of magnetic nanoparticles in Microcystis aeruginosa harvesting.

This study developed a magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) harvesting and reactivation technique for rapid cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa separation. The harvesting of raw MNPs achieved high efficiency of 99.6% with the MNPs dosage of 0.58g MNPs/g dry-biomass, but gradually decreased to 59.1% when directly reused 5 times. With extra ultrasonic chloroform:methanol solvent treatment, the MNPs can be effectively reactivated for M. aeruginosa harvesting with 60% efficiency after 5 times reactivation and the separation efficiency kept above 93% with 0.20g MNPs/g dry-biomass dosage. Extracellular polymeric substances enhanced photosynthesis over respiration in Microcystis aeruginosa.

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) play a critical role in Microcystis-dominated freshwater cyanobacterial blooms. However, the mechanisms through which EPS affects Microcystis photosynthesis, respiration, and further affects its growth are not understood completely. To address this, we investigated the effects of varying EPS concentrations on the physiological processes of Microcystis aeruginosa. The results demonstrated that increasing EPS concentrations significantly enhanced both cell density and energy fixation efficiency, accompanied by a reduction in CO2 emission flux. Specificall

Phylogenomic diversity and chromatic acclimation in phycoerythrin-containing Microcystis aeruginosa.

Microcystis aeruginosa is a bloom-forming cyanobacterium widely distributed in eutrophic freshwater systems. Most strains are blue-green due to the presence of the photosynthetic pigments phycocyanin and chlorophyll a. Less commonly, brownish strains have been reported, reflecting the presence of the red pigment phycoerythrin (PE). However, the genomic basis, phylogeny and evolutionary origin of PE pigmentation in M. aeruginosa remain poorly understood. Here, we characterized PE-containing M. aeruginosa strains, including six newly sequenced genomes. All genomes harboured putative PE synthesis

Pressurized Microcystis can help to remove nitrate from eutrophic water.

The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using harmful cyanobacterium Microcystis to help remove nitrate from eutrophic water. The results showed that after treatment by pressurization at 0.4MPa, Microcystis quickly sank to the bottom. Pressurization did not significantly affect the viability of Microcystis and this cyanobacterium maintained high viability over three days under dark/anoxic conditions. Meanwhile, the amount of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) secreted from living Microcystis cells reached 2.48mgCmg-1 Chl a, and a significant enhancement of pressurized Microcyst

Availability of different phosphorus forms in agricultural soil to Microcystis aeruginosa.

We investigated the availability of different forms of particulate soil phosphorus (P) to Microcystis aeruginosa by sequential extraction and bioassay. We cultured M. aeruginosa in media containing, as the sole source of P, soils sequentially extracted with 1 M NH4Cl, 0.11 M bicarbonate dithionite, 1 M NaOH, and 0.5 M HCl. Analyses of chlorophyll-a, particulate organic carbon, and particulate organic nitrogen showed that M. aeruginosa could utilize some of the P remaining in the soil after each extraction. Alkaline phosphatase (AP) assays of sequentially extracted soils showed distinct pattern

Toxicity effects of microplastics and nanoplastics with cadmium on the alga Microcystis aeruginosa.

The extensive spread of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in the aquatic environment has attracted widespread attention. The toxicity of cadmium (Cd) combined with microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) toward freshwater algae Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) was investigated to evaluate the environmental behavior of the Cd complexation in fresh water. Cd alone has the highest toxicity to algae. Both MPs and NPs also have a negative effect on the growth of algae as individual components due to their adsorption of nutrients and disruption of the alga's activity in a single MP

Compensatory respiration supports survival during extended heat stress in Microcystis aeruginosa.

Phototrophic organisms must balance energy between photosynthesis and respiration to survive. In cyanobacteria, this coordination is especially critical as both processes share the same membrane and electron transport complexes. Although electron exchange between the two pathways is known, photosynthesis is often presumed to dominate under many conditions. Here, under an extended heat-stress condition, our data indicate that respiration can compensate for reduced photosynthetic activity. We compared two Microcystis aeruginosa strains (PCC7806 and Lake Kinneret isolated strain C-1004). PCC7806

Interspecific competition between Microcystis aeruginosa and Chlamydomonas microsphaera stressed by tetracyclines.

The extensive use of tetracyclines in human and veterinary medicine causes contamination in the environment that could contribute to the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria or competition between species of phytoplankton. In this study, Microcystis aeruginosa (a bloom-forming cyanobacterium) and Chlamydomonas microsphaera (common green alga) were selected to test the effects of different concentrations of tetracyclines (tetracycline and oxytetracycline) in monoculture and co-culture. The results showed that compared with monoculture, the cell growth of C. microsphaera decreased significant
