Hypertension is the major controllable risk factor associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) events such as myocardial infarction, stroke … potassium levels, reduced renal function, cough, angioedema, skin rashes, and fetal abnormalities. Milk proteins, both caseins and whey proteins, are a rich source of ACE inhibitory peptides. Several studies in spontaneously hypertensive rats show that these casokinins and lactokinins can significantly reduce blood pressure. Furthermore, a limited number of hu …

The mode and nature of the binding of chlorpromazine (CPZ), a psychotropic drug, with milk proteins--alpha-lactalbumin (with substantial amounts of alpha-helix, beta-sheet and random coil), alpha-lactoglobulin (a major beta-sheeted protein) and alphas-casein (a random coiled protein) have been studied spectrofluorometrically and spectropolarimetrically. The binding affinity of CPZ for unfolded proteins is comparatively less than that of folded proteins although the number of binding sites is smaller in the latter case, due to the greater extent of binding of CPZ for folded proteins. Thermodyna…

Milk varieties and specific proteins exhibit anxiolytic-like actions in mice and rats exposed to several tests, the most prominent being the elevated plus-maze. Administrations of αs1-casein, its 91-100 (α-casozepine), 91-97, 91-93, and 91-92 fragments, the 60-69 fragment of β-casein, lactoferrin, β-lactotensin, wheylin-1, wheylin-2, and α-lactalbumin have been reported to increase open arm exploration relative to enclosed arm exploration. Anxiolytic-like actions have also been described for 91-93 and 91-92 fragments of αs1-casein, wheylin-1, α-lactalbumin, and lactoferrin in the open-field. S

The diagnosis of cow's milk proteins allergy can only be established if the symptoms disappear with an elimination diet and if a later controlled challenge leads either to a recurrence of symptoms or to some other clearly identified changes. At the moment there is not a specific immunological test surely effective in all cases. Anyway the three Gooldmann's tests are not necessary. In fact a single challenge with a cow's milk meal will be sufficient when clinical observation is accompanied by monitoring some simple laboratory tests (serum and nasal eosinophils, steathorrea, coproleucocytes, hem…

UNLABELLED: The use of innovative protein ingredients produced by biotechnological methods requires a comprehensive assessment of their allergenic potential for the child's body. The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical significance and safety profile of hydrolysates of cow's and mare's milk proteins and lactoferrin (LF) for children with cow's milk protein (CMP) allergy. This was based on the investigation of the ability of these products to bind specific IgE, allowing for an assessment of the risks associated with their use, including potential cross-reactivity with mare's milk prot…

Milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) is one of the milk components that is produced by the lactating mammary glands and released to the milk in the form of vesicles. MFGM surrounds milk fat globule secreted by the milk producing cells and has a complex structure containing various lipids (e.g., triacylglycerides, phospholipids, and cholesterol), proteins and other macromolecules. Among the proteinaceous components of MFGM is lactadherin, also known as milk fat globule-EGF factor 8 protein (MFG-E8). Being one of the main proteins present in MFGM, lactadherin is related to milk secretion, has antimi

BACKGROUND: Cow's milk proteins are amongst the most common causes of food allergy in infants, and caseins are probably the main allergens. The existence of a high degree of cross-reactivity between milk caseins from different animals has been reported. We describe a 2-year-old boy who experienced allergic reactions after eating and touching sheep's cheese, but who tolerated cow's milk and cow's milk dairy products. He had never ingested milk or milk derivatives from sheep or goat.
METHODS: Skin prick tests were carried out using whey fractions of cow's milk, whole milk and casein from goat, …

In clinical allergology and particularly during childhood, we quite frequently encounter patients who are allergic to milk. This has usually been confirmed by the clinical history and by skin testing. Statistics show a sensitization to cows' milk of between 0.3 and 7% of the world's population. In view of the diversity of opinions about an immunological problem of such clinical importance, we decided to carry out a clinical study to determine the sensitization to different fractions in patients allergic to milk. For this study, 82 patients were selected with a history of milk allergy together

Clinical trials are reviewed, involving proteins and peptides derived from milk (predominantly bovine), with the exception of lactoferrin, which will be the subject of another article. The most explored milk fraction is α-lactalbumin (LA), which is often applied with glycomacropeptide (GMP) - a casein degradation product. These milk constituents are used in health-promoting infant and adult formulae as well as in a modified form (HAMLET) to treat cancer. Lactoperoxidase (LCP) is used as an additive to mouth hygiene products and as a salivary substitute. Casein derivatives are applied, in addit

OBJECTIVE: This report summarizes a review of anaphylactic reactions to cow's milk and beef presented at a recent conference on adverse reactions to bovine proteins.
DATA SOURCES: A review of pertinent PubMed (National Library of Medicine) articles was performed. Relevant publications were critically analyzed.
STUDY SELECTION: The expert opinion of the author was used to select the relevant data for the review.
RESULTS: Although cow's milk has been recognized for many years as one of the leading causes of food allergy, beef has only recently been identified as a cause of immunoglobulin (Ig)

Cow's milk is one of the first foreign proteins ingested by infants and is one of the most common and potent food allergens. The presence of cow's milk is widespread due also to its unlabelled inclusion as an ingredient, or to errors in cooking, processing and preparation, and in restaurant food. As several foods may contain cow's milk in a hidden form, foods for allergic babies should be prepared at home or with food items with all their ingredients listed on the label. Parents should be provided with appropriate material and instructed how to detect potential sources of hidden cow's milk by

The incidence of cow's milk protein intolerance (CMPI) varies depending on the series. The aim of the present investigation was to determine the incidence of this disease in our population and its change over the past the years. Over the period January 1977 to December 1986, 217 patients suspected to have the disease were submitted to a cow's milk challenge test. Diagnosis was confirmed clinically and/or pathologically in 121 patients and was ruled out in 96 patients. The incidence for the whole period was 0.78 cases/1,000 alive newborn infants. However, it fell significantly over the ten year

Cow's Milk Protein Intolerance (CMPI) is the most common food intolerance in childhood. The I, III and IV type of the immunological mechanisms are involved in the pathogenesis. Nowadays there are no diagnostic tests with good reliability excluding the IgE-mediated clinical pictures. Recently the evaluation of antibodies (IgA and IgG classes) versus milk proteins has been proposed as reliable test. In order to establish the pattern of antibody response against milk proteins we studied 37 children (17 males and 20 females), aged from 3 months to 6 years, divided as follows: 23 with CMPI of which…

Specific IgE antibodies against whole-milk-antigen mixture and against casein, alpha-lactalbumin and beta-lactoglobulin were determined using the radioallergosorbent test (RAST) in 125 sera of children with an initial diagnosis of suspected cow milk allergy. The results of the RAST were correlated with the clinical diagnosis. No specific IgE antibodies could be demonstrated in 98 children. Of these, 20 (20%) showed clinically intolerance to cow milk presumably on the basis of other immunological mechanisms. Specific IgE antibodies could be demonstrated in the sera of 27 children. Of these, 16

Exclusive breastfeeding is currently recommended until at least 6 months of postnatal age, due to maternal breast milk (BM) unique composition and beneficial properties. In fact, BM modifies itself according to gestational age (GA) at birth, adapting its composition to neonatal requests during lactation. Multiple births represent about 3% of the whole pregnancies; such neonates result more vulnerable than full-term newborns, due to lower GA and birth weight (BW) and the higher incidence of perinatal complications. Although an adequate nutrition is fundamental for twins and other multiples, stu
