BACKGROUND: Among the victims of floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes, there is an increased prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, which are risk factors for suicidal thinking. We conducted this study to determine whether natural disasters affect suicide rates.
METHODS: From a list of all the events declared by the U.S. government to be federal disasters between 1982 and 1989, we selected the 377 counties that had each been affected by a single natural disaster during that period. We collected data on suicides during the 36 months before and the 48 months after the disas

Natural disasters (including heatwaves, wildfires, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions) significantly impact respiratory health, posing heightened risks to vulnerable populations such as individuals with pre-existing conditions, children, and the elderly. This review explores the complex relationship between natural catastrophes and respiratory health, emphasising the roles of chemical pollutants, biocontaminants and meteorological factors. Epidemiological evidence highlights alarming trends, including increased asthma exacerbations, COPD hospitalisations and respiratory inf

2018 brought multiple, unprecedented natural disasters, including hurricanes, floods, and in the United States, the deadliest wildfire in California's history. After the immediate emergency is over and the media attention wanes, communities must deal with the long process of recovering and rebuilding. Yet, some of the greatest challenges that disaster victims face come not only from the disaster itself but also from the long-term health problems stemming from the event. In the immediate aftermath, physical injuries and infections must be treated and controlled. Long-term needs include mental a

Access to care for patients with ESKD is frequently disrupted after natural disasters, public health crises, and human conflict. Emergency preparation can mitigate the risk of harm and improve outcomes. Before Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the United States was unprepared to assist patients facing disaster. We evaluate responses to Hurricane Katrina which caused unprecedented damage to health and property in the Gulf Coast. As a result of the multitude of identified problems with the national, local, and kidney-specific responses to Katrina, new systems were created that mitigated loss after Hurr

The link between natural disasters and subsequent fungal infections in disaster-affected persons has been increasingly recognized. Fungal respiratory conditions associated with disasters include coccidioidomycosis, and fungi are among several organisms that can cause near-drowning pneumonia. Wound contamination with organic matter can lead to post-disaster skin and soft tissue fungal infections, notably mucormycosis. The role of climate change in the environmental growth, distribution, and dispersal mechanisms of pathogenic fungi is not fully understood; however, ongoing climate change could l

Natural disasters may lead to the outbreaks of infectious diseases because they increase the risk factors for infectious diseases. This paper reviews the risk factors for infectious diseases after natural disasters, especially earthquake, and the infectious diseases following disasters reported in recent years. The infectious diseases after earthquake include diarrhea, cholera, viral hepatitis, upper respiratory tract infection, tuberculosis, measles, leptospirosis, dengue fever, tetanus, and gas gangrene, as well as some rare infections. Children are vulnerable to infectious diseases, so pedi

OBJECTIVE: To identify cases of coccidioidomycosis in the New Orleans area following Hurricane Katrina.
METHODS: We performed clinical surveillance across multiple medical disciplines and among three major teaching hospitals in the greater NOLA area in the posthurricane period. Each case involved a detailed history, physical examination, laboratory evaluations, and, in the two fatal cases, a comprehensive postmortem examination.
RESULTS: We identified four cases of coccidioidomycosis during the posthurricane period: three with disseminated disease and one with disease limited to the respirat

Fungal infections are an important source of morbidity and mortality that can manifest as superficial or invasive diseases. Diagnostic techniques for human fungal pathogens remain problematic, and multi-drug resistance is emerging. This review addresses the potential emergence of new fungal pathogens in changing environments and reported instances of cutaneous fungal infections after natural disasters. Global warming does more than increase the mean global temperature; it is associated with changing precipitation patterns and major climatic events. With natural disasters, niches are created fo

OBJECTIVE: Although a goal of disaster preparedness is to protect vulnerable populations from hazards, little research has explored the types of risks that workers face in their encounters with natural disasters. This study examines how workers are fatally injured in severe natural events.
METHODS: A classification structure was created that identified the physical component of the disaster that led to the death and the pursuit of the worker as it relates to the disaster. Data on natural disasters from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries for the years 1992 through 2006 were analyzed.

When natural disasters demolish shelter, destroy sources of clean drinking water, and disrupt the availability of medical care, vast numbers of people are placed at increased risk of disease. The infectious diseases that propagate under these conditions are usually common ones. Occasionally, a natural disaster alters the local environment in ways that markedly increase the prevalence of a disease that is endemic to a geographic region, occurring only as isolated cases under normal conditions. Many of these infections may affect the thorax. In this article, we discuss the radiologic findings of

In the last decade, Europe has seen a rise in natural disasters. Due to climate change, an increase of such events is predicted for the future. While natural disasters have been a rare phenomenon in Europe so far, other regions of the world, such as Central and North America or Southeast Asia, have regularly been affected by Hurricanes and Tsunamis. The aim of the current study is to synthesize the literature on child development in immediate stress, prolonged reactions, trauma, and recovery after natural disasters with a special focus on trajectories of (mal-)adaptation. A natural disaster is a phenomenon causing significant human, material, economic, and environmental losses, exceeding the capacity of the affected community or country to respond with its own resources. These events progress through phases: hyperacute, acute, subacute, chronic, and rehabilitation/recovery. Orthopedic surgeons play a vital role in each phase, from initial rescue to long-term rehabilitation. In the acute phase, their responsibilities include triaging and managing injuries such as fractures (commonly in the lower limbs), wound infections, and crush injuries. Effective treatment i

This is a critical review to discuss the best practice approaches to mortuary operations in preparation for and the response to natural, mass fatality, disaster events, as identified by a review of published articles. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) Statement guided the identification of potential articles to use in this critical review. Subsequent searches were also conducted to identify articles relating to heat wave, and flood mortality. All identified peer-reviewed studies published in English which discussed the preparation and r

Amputation is a commonly performed procedure during natural disasters and mass casualties related to industrial accidents and military conflicts where large civilian populations are subjected to severe musculoskeletal trauma. Crush injuries and crush syndrome, an often-overwhelming number of casualties, delayed presentations, regional cultural and other factors, all can mandate a surgical approach to amputation that is different than that typically used under non-disaster conditions. The following article will review the subject of amputation during natural disasters and mass casualties with e

OBJECTIVE: To review existing literature to assess the risks of infection from dead bodies after a natural disaster occurs, including who is most at risk, what precautions should be taken, and how to safely dispose of the bodies.
METHODS: Disease transmission requires the presence of an infectious agent, exposure to that agent, and a susceptible host. These elements were considered to characterize the infectious disease risk from dead bodies. Using the PubMed on-line databases of the National Library of Medicine of the United States of America, searching was done for relevant literature on th

PURPOSE: To systematically review Australian evidence examining associations between exposure to natural disasters and suicidal behaviours, including suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and suicide mortality.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with a pre-registered protocol (CRD42023471489), PRISMA, and SwiMS guidelines. Databases were searched in May 2026. Eligible studies were Australian observational studies examining droughts, floods, bushfires, heatwaves, or storms in relation to suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, or death by suicide. Risk of bias was assessed us
