Scrotal Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor.

The peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (pPNET) is a rare malignant tumor originating from neuroectoderm that usually occurs in children or adolescent and is frequently located in the extremities, chest cavity, pelvic cavity and chest wall. We present a rare case of an 84-year-old man with a history of pPNET in the scrotal sac, to our knowledge not previously published in the literature. The presence of a large irreducible mass in the inguinal sac forced to exclude a tumor. Ultrasound and MRI are very useful modalities to assess the location of the mass, its dependency from any organ an

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the pelvis.

UNLABELLED: The primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) belongs to a group of highly malignant tumors and is composed of small round cells of a neuroectodermal origin. Categorized in the same tumor family as Ewing sarcoma, the PNET is most likely to occur in bones and soft tissues. However, a small number of PNET cases arising in the pelvis have been reported as well. WE PRESENT THREE CASES OF PELVIC PNET: two cases in the ovary and one case in the broad ligament. The PNET often exhibits aggressive clinical behavior with worse outcomes than other small round cell tumors. The significant progno

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the thymus.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (pPNET) are an extremely rare disease entity of malignant tumors belonging to the Ewing sarcoma family that usually occur in children and adolescents with a predilection for the truncal and axial soft tissue. Thoracopulmonary manifestation in children mostly involves the chest wall as a large tumorous mass or the posterior mediastinum. In adults these tumors are even more infrequent. We report about a 46-year-old woman with a pPNET of the thymus which infiltrated the pericardium. According to the English literature this is the first reported case bot

Ewing's Sarcoma/Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors in Bronchus.

Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (ES/pPNET), a member of the Ewing sarcoma family of tumors, is a malignant soft tissue tumor with small undifferentiated neuroectodermal cells. Primary trachea-bronchial ES/pPNET is very rare. The most common pulmonary ES is due to a metastasis. We describe a case of ES/pPNET which originated in the left basal trunk bronchus. The patient was a 30-year-old male, presenting with irritable cough and fever for 10 days. A tumor of 60 mm in diameter was found in the left basal trunk bronchus, extending to the left lower lobe. No distant metas

What's in a name? Intracranial peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors and CNS primitive neuroectodermal tumors are not the same.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (P-PNET) are extremely rare. They can be easily misdiagnosed as central nervous system primitive neuroectodermal tumors (CNS-PNET) or meningiomas. Little is known about the optimal treatment and prognosis of these tumors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We evaluated the treatment and outcome of 17 patients with intracranial, nonmetastatic, genetically confirmed P-PNET. Three patients were treated at our institutions. Thirteen other cases providing sufficient treatment and follow-up information were extracted from the literature. RESU

Thoracoabdominal peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors in childhood: radiological features.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) are extremely uncommon, malignant neoplasms affecting mostly children and young adults. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data and radiological studies of four such cases. All cases were pathologically proven. Plain films, US, and CT scans were used. The youngest child had a huge pelvic tumor and two adolescents each had a chest wall (Askin) tumor. The fourth patient had a most unusual location of the PNET in the anterior mediastinum. The CT findings are emphasized. We emphasize that the markedly abnormal CT findings are not specific fo

Intracranial peripheral-type primitive neuroectodermal tumor.

A 15-year-old man presented with headache. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a large extraaxial tumor with cyst at the right frontotemporal region. The solid part of the tumor was homogeneously enhanced on T(1)-weighted MR imaging after injection of gadolinium. Digital subtraction angiography of the external carotid artery revealed sunburst appearance corresponding to the tumor, which was fed by the right middle meningeal artery. His headache worsened and computed tomography revealed enlargement of the tumor and intracystic hemorrhage, so emergent operation was performed. At surgery, th

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the cerebellopontine angle.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors are highly malignant small cell neoplasms. A 27-year-old female presented with a 6-month history of right-sided facial pain and progressive weakness of the facial muscles. She had non-pulsative tinnitus, progressive right hearing loss and facial palsy. T2-weighted MRI showed a heterogeneous hyperintense lesion invading the right internal auditory canal. Surgical removal was performed. Pathological examination showed sheets of small cells with irregular nuclei. Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated positive immunoreactivity for neuron-specific enol

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Primitive neuroectodermal tumors are extremely rare and highly aggressive malignant small round cell tumors that arise from the primitive nerve cells of the nervous system or outside it. These tumors share similar histology, immunohistologic characteristics, and cytogenetics with Ewing's sarcoma. Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the chest wall are rare malignant tumors seen in children and young adults. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor in a 4-year-old Albanian girl with a mediastinal tumor and an unusual clinical

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor in masseter muscle.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor is a member of malignant small round cell tumors. These tumors especially originate from the central and autonomous nervous system. However, these tumors may be originated from peripheral tissues and are called peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor. A 14-year-old girl attended to the Ear Nose Throat Clinic with the complaint of progressive painless swelling mass for 2 months on the right side of the face. Neck magnetic resonance imaging showed 3.5 × 2.5 × 2-cm isointense mass on T1 and hyperintense on T2 sequences. There was no pathological lymphadenopathy

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor after radiotherapy.

A 41-year-old man had a peripheral neuroectodermal tumor develop at the distal third of the fibula 4 years after radiotherapy for relapsed villonodular synovitis. This type of sarcoma usually is classified into the heterogeneic group of small round-cell bone tumors as a subdivision of Ewing's sarcomas. The immuno-staining positivity of the neoplastic cells for the neuron-specific enolase allowed the authors to make the diagnosis of a tumor with neuroectodermal origin. When the histologic study confirmed the diagnosis, the patient was treated with chemotherapy, surgical excision of the tumor, a

Malignant peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the uterus.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PPNET) is rare, occurring most often in young adults. Approximately 50 cases have been reported, with only four cases involving the female genital tract. We report the fifth patient. The term "PPNET" should be used only for tumors with neuroectodermal elements exclusively that occur at sites outside the central and sympathetic nervous system. The pathologic differential diagnoses include rhabdomyosarcoma, immature malignant teratoma, small cell carcinoma of the cervix, and ganglioneuroma. Therapy for this tumor has varied, and no effective regimen ha

Atypical cytogenic aberrations in two childhood peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors.

Atypical cytogenetic abnormalities were detected in peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PPNET) of the extremity in two children. One had an osseous tumor with a balanced reciprocal translocation, t(5;9)(q22;q32), and had a complete response to therapy. The other had a non-osseous tumor with an interstitial deletion, del(18)(q12.2q21.2), was resistant to combination therapy, and at autopsy had evidence of possible clonal evolution with the karyotype 46,XX der(8)t(8;8)(p11.2;q13), inv(16)(p13.2q12),del(18)(q12.2q21.2). Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor: A Rare Case in Pediatrics.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are a type of malignant tumors made up of small neuroectodermal-derived round cells that affect soft tissue and bone, with a wide range of clinical symptoms and histological commonalities depending on the site of the tumor. PNETs account for 4% of all pediatric and adolescent cancers. Here we report a case of a peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor in a five-year-old boy. Two days before admission, he complained of multiple attacks of vomiting and one episode of hematemesis, associated with subjective fever, abdominal pain, and distention. He also

Unusual presentation of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the maxilla.

The peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (pPNET) is a rare and highly malignant soft tissue neoplasm in children and young adults. Fewer than 10 reported cases of pPNET of maxilla are available in the English literature. A 28-year-old woman was presented with the pPNET of the maxilla and metastasis. Two years after diagnosis, she experienced diplopia, and then magnetic resonance imaging was done, which showed a mass in the optic chiasma and parasellar region. The typical appearance resembled large noncalcified soft tissue masses in the magnetic resonance image and computed tomographic sc

Coexistence of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor and tetralogy of Fallot.

We describe a little girl with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) who was found to have a huge peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (pPNET) when she developed progressive difficulty in standing and crawling at the age of 11 months. The tumor was located in the left paraspinal region (T4-T12), with intraspinal extension causing severe compression. Nine days after surgical decompression with laminectomy, chemotherapy was initiated with alternative courses of vincristine, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, etoposide, and ifosfamide every 3 weeks. Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the vulva: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Ewing's sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES-PNET) is a high-grade malignant neoplasm that often develops in the skeletal system. Primary extraskeletal ES-PNET is an uncommon condition that rarely affects the female genital tract. Tumors in the ovary, cervix, and uterine corpus and vulva are occasionally reported. Reports on the Ewing family of tumors involving the vulva are extremely rare in the relevant literature. Only a few cases of vulvar ES-PNET have so far been reported.
