Introspection in neurofeedback performance via neurofeedback training of the insula - A feasibility study.

Through real-time functional MRI neurofeedback training individuals can learn the voluntary regulation of a selected neural signal. However, it is unknown whether they have introspection in this targeted neural signal. We performed a feasibility study of a new insula-targeted neurofeedback paradigm, aimed at addressing the question of introspective abilities. Specifically, we tested the feasibility of (1) a heartbeat-counting task to localize the insula, (2) graded neurofeedback of the insula, and (3) participants' ability to estimate the level of activation of the target area. Ten healthy vol

[Neurofeedback in therapy of tinnitus].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Biofeedback is known as a possibility to control physiologic processes like body temperature or heart frequency. Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback linked to aspects of the electrical activity of the brain such as frequency, location or amplitude of specific EEG activity. It has been successfully used in patients with closed head injury, hyperactivity disorder or epilepsy. PATIENTS/METHODS: In this study 40 patients with tinnitus were treated with neurofeedback. They trained to upregulate the amplitude of their alpha-activity and downregulate the amplitude of beta

[Neurofeedback and personal development].

BACKGROUND: Development of neurofeedback was preceded by development of classical and quantitative EEG, construction of computer devices, programmes and individual medical protocols. METHODS: The basic rule of this method is to achieve effective change of rhythm and power of brain bioelectric activity based on knowledge of normal activity and identification of abnormalities of present activity. Various types of disturbed activity occur in many syndromes and brain development disorders. Training process is characterized by repetitive local activation of chosen brain structures as well as by ge

Combining neurofeedback with source estimation: Evaluation of an sLORETA neurofeedback protocol for chronic tinnitus treatment.

BACKGROUND: Alpha/delta neurofeedback has been shown to be a potential treatment option for chronic subjective tinnitus. Traditional neurofeedback approaches working with a handful of surface electrodes have been criticized, however, due to their low spatial specificity. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate an innovative tomographic neurofeedback protocol that combines neural activity measured across the whole scalp with sLORETA source estimation. METHODS: Forty-eight tinnitus patients participated in 15 neurofeedback training sessions as well as extensive pre, post, and foll

[Improve athletes' performance with neurofeedback].

In order to optimise their performance, athletes are looking for innovative, efficient and reliable training approaches. The development of electroencephalography and neurofeedback (NF) offers the opportunity to create innovative cognitive training procedures. Indeed, these technologies allow athletes to benefit from a feedback during mental training sessions and to objectively assess performance and progress. In addition, NF makes it possible to guide the athletes towards optimal cognitive strategies according to their objectives, and has a motivational dimension that pushes them to engage in

[Neurofeedback therapy in the treatment of tinnitus].

Neurofeedback therapy is a fast-growing field of tinnitus treatment, which is a new type of biofeedback therapy. In the past, the "muscle tone" and "blood flow" were used as feedback signals in biofeedback therapy to treat tinnitus, however there was no long-term follow-up report. Instead, neurofeedback therapy utilizes EEG (electroencephalogram) as the feedback signal, which is also called EEG biofeedback therapy. At present, most treatments of tinnitus only record subjective measures of patients as evaluation indicators, whereas neurofeedback therapy is more convincing for using comprehensiv

Current Status of Neurofeedback for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: A Systematic Review and the Possibility of Decoded Neurofeedback.

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a neuropsychiatric affective disorder that can develop after traumatic life-events. Exposure-based therapy is currently one of the most effective treatments for PTSD. However, exposure to traumatic stimuli is so aversive that a significant number of patients drop-out of therapy during the course of treatment. Among various attempts to develop novel therapies that bypass such aversiveness, neurofeedback appears promising. With neurofeedback, patients can unconsciously self-regulate brain activity via real-time monitoring and feedback of the E

Whole-brain mechanism of neurofeedback therapy: predictive modeling of neurofeedback outcomes on repetitive negative thinking in depression.

Real-time fMRI neurofeedback (rtfMRI-NF) has emerged as a promising intervention for psychiatric disorders, yet its clinical efficacy remains underexplored due to an incomplete mechanistic understanding. This study aimed to delineate the whole-brain mechanisms underpinning the effects of rtfMRI-NF on repetitive negative thinking in depression. In a double-blind randomized controlled trial, forty-three depressed individuals underwent NF training targeting the functional connectivity (FC) between the posterior cingulate cortex and the right temporoparietal junction, linked to rumination severity

Neurofeedback for Pain Management: A Systematic Review.

Background: Chronic pain is a significant global health issue. For most individuals with chronic pain, biomedical treatments do not provide adequate relief. Given the evidence that neurophysiological abnormalities are associated with pain, it is reasonable to consider treatments that target these factors, such as neurofeedback (NF). The primary objectives of this review were to summarize the current state of knowledge regarding: (1) the different types of NF and NF protocols that have been evaluated for pain management; (2) the evidence supporting each NF type and protocol; (3) if targeted bra

Neurofeedback outcomes in clients with Asperger's syndrome.

This paper summarizes data from a review of neurofeedback (NFB) training with 150 clients with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and 9 clients with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) seen over a 15 year period (1993-2008) in a clinical setting. The main objective was to investigate whether electroncephalographic (EEG) biofeedback, also called neurofeedback (NFB), made a significant difference in clients diagnosed with AS. An earlier paper (Thompson et al. 2009) reviews the symptoms of AS, highlights research findings and theories concerning this disorder, discusses QEEG patterns in AS (both single and 19

Time course of clinical change following neurofeedback.

Neurofeedback - learning to modulate brain function through real-time monitoring of current brain state - is both a powerful method to perturb and probe brain function and an exciting potential clinical tool. For neurofeedback effects to be useful clinically, they must persist. Here we examine the time course of symptom change following neurofeedback in two clinical populations, combining data from two ongoing neurofeedback studies. This analysis reveals a shared pattern of symptom change, in which symptoms continue to improve for weeks after neurofeedback. This time course has several implica

Is neurofeedback A reliable therapy for managing Parkinson's Disease?

OBJECTIVE: Standard treatments for Parkinson's disease (PD) often lose effectiveness over time, motivating interest in complementary, non-pharmacological approaches. Neurofeedback, which trains patients to consciously modulate brain activity, has shown theoretical promise in PD; however, its clinical value remains uncertain. We conducted a PRISMA-guided systematic review to evaluate the current evidence. METHODS: We included studies of patients with idiopathic PD undergoing any form of neurofeedback training. Case studies were excluded to reduce intersubject variability. Sixteen studies met i

A Neurofeedback System to Decrease Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain.

The existing methods for treating chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain do not address the restoration of altered brain activity, referred to as maladaptive plasticity, resulting from the effects of chronic MSK pain. Using electroencephalography (EEG) an increase in event-related alpha power over the somatosensory cortex was previously observed during movement in chronic MSK pain. A low cost neurofeedback system was developed that focuses on decreasing event-related alpha power. The system detects movement initiation by electromyography (EMG) and extracts movement-related alpha power over the som

Neuromodulation and neurofeedback treatments in eating disorders and obesity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Psychological interventions are the treatment of choice for most eating disorders; however, significant proportions of patients do not recover with these. Advances in understanding of the neurobiology of eating disorders have led to the development of targeted treatments, such as deep brain stimulation (DBS), noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS), and neurofeedback. We review the emerging clinical evidence for the use of these interventions in eating disorders and obesity, together with their theoretical rationale. Finally, we reflect on future developments. RECENT FINDINGS:

Neurofeedback for Tinnitus Treatment - Review and Current Concepts.

An effective treatment to completely alleviate chronic tinnitus symptoms has not yet been discovered. However, recent developments suggest that neurofeedback (NFB), a method already popular in the treatment of other psychological and neurological disorders, may provide a suitable alternative. NFB is a non-invasive method generally based on electrophysiological recordings and visualizing of certain aspects of brain activity as positive or negative feedback that enables patients to voluntarily control their brain activity and thus triggers them to unlearn typical neural activity patterns related

Neurofeedback training for a patient with thalamic and cortical infarctions.

One year after a left posterior and thalamic stroke, a 52-year-old male participant was treated with 14 weeks of theta reduction neurofeedback training. Imaging studies revealed left temporal, parietal, occipital, and bilateral thalamic infarctions along the distribution of the posterior cerebral artery. Neuropsychological testing demonstrated severe verbal memory, naming, visual tracking, and fine motor deficits. Additionally, alexia without agraphia was present. A pretraining quantitative electroencephalograph (QEEG) found alpha attenuation, lack of alpha reactivity to eye opening, and exces

Treatment of chronic fatigue with neurofeedback and self-hypnosis.

A 21 year old patient reported a relatively rapid onset of serious chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), with her worst symptoms being cognitive impairments. Congruent with research on rapid onset CFS, she had no psychiatric history and specialized testing did not suggest that somatization was likely. Neuroimaging and EEG research has documented brain dysfunction in cases of CFS. Therefore, a quantitative EEG was done, comparing her to a normative data base. This revealed excessive left frontal theta brainwave activity in an area previously implicated in SPECT research. Therefore, a novel treatment

Distinct roles of neuronal phenotypes during neurofeedback adaptation.

Learning adaptation allows the brain to refine motor patterns in response to changing environments rapidly. While population-level neural dynamics and single-neuron activity in motor learning have been widely studied, the contributions of individual neuron types remain poorly understood. Here, we employed a brain-machine interface (BMI) task with perturbations of varying difficulty to investigate single-neuron dynamics underlying neurofeedback adaptation in two rhesus macaques. Cortical neurons were classified based on waveform shape into narrow waveform (NW) and broad waveform (BW) categories
