The nitrogen cycle.

Nitrogen is the fourth most abundant element in cellular biomass, and it comprises the majority of Earth's atmosphere. The interchange between inert dinitrogen gas (N2) in the extant atmosphere and 'reactive nitrogen' (those nitrogen compounds that support, or are products of, cellular metabolism and growth) is entirely controlled by microbial activities. This was not the case, however, in the primordial atmosphere, when abiotic reactions likely played a significant role in the inter-transformation of nitrogen oxides. Although such abiotic reactions are still important, the extant nitrogen cyc

The global nitrogen cycle in the twenty-first century.

Global nitrogen fixation contributes 413 Tg of reactive nitrogen (Nr) to terrestrial and marine ecosystems annually of which anthropogenic activities are responsible for half, 210 Tg N. The majority of the transformations of anthropogenic Nr are on land (240 Tg N yr(-1)) within soils and vegetation where reduced Nr contributes most of the input through the use of fertilizer nitrogen in agriculture. Leakages from the use of fertilizer Nr contribute to nitrate (NO3(-)) in drainage waters from agricultural land and emissions of trace Nr compounds to the atmosphere. Emissions, mainly of ammonia (N

Impact of trichloroethylene and toluene on nitrogen cycling in soil.

The effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) and toluene on soil nitrogen-cycling activities were examined. Ammonium oxidation potential (AOP) was reduced after incubation with as little as 1 microgram of TCE ml-1, and the effects were generally greater when toluene was present and increased with longer exposure. Arginine ammonification potential and denitrification enzyme activity were constant regardless of TCE concentration or the presence of toluene, while nitrite oxidation potential (NOP) exhibited variable sensitivity. KCl-extractable ammonium levels increased dramatically after exposure to 30

Nonpyrogenic "Black" Nitrogen Likely Plays a Major Yet Underrecognized Role in the Global Nitrogen Cycle.

Condensed aromatic nitrogen (ConAN) is commonly found in soil and aquatic environments. ConAN is broadly viewed by the biogeochemistry community as a combustion-derived product leading to its frequent designation as pyrogenic "black" nitrogen. Here, we provide evidence that ConAN can also form through nonpyrogenic pathways. In an experiment simulating biomass oxidation, pine wood boards assembled with iron nails were exposed to 12 years of natural environmental conditions. Nitrogen concentrations increased from 0.2 to 1.2 wt % with increasing proximity to the nail. Ultrahigh resolution mass sp

Benefits of CO2 Fertilization on Global Grassland Nitrogen Cycles.

Grasslands are vital for providing wildlife habitats, essential ecosystem services, and food to humanity. Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (eCO2), as a key driver of climate change, has substantial effects on grasslands. Nonetheless, a holistic quantification on the response of the nitrogen cycle to eCO2 in global grasslands is lacking. Here, we show that solely eCO2 could increase the net primary productivity (NPP) in grasslands by 10% (95% confidence interval, 8-12%), yet simultaneously decrease leaf nitrogen content by 8% (95% confidence interval, 5-10%). When considering the effects

Parasite infection alters nitrogen cycling at the ecosystem scale.

Despite growing evidence that parasites often alter nutrient flows through their hosts and can comprise a substantial amount of biomass in many systems, whether endemic parasites influence ecosystem nutrient cycling, and which nutrient pathways may be important, remains conjectural. A framework to evaluate how endemic parasites alter nutrient cycling across varied ecosystems requires an understanding of the following: (i) parasite effects on host nutrient excretion; (ii) ecosystem nutrient limitation; (iii) effects of parasite abundance, host density, host functional role and host excretion ra

Rapid cycling of reactive nitrogen in the marine boundary layer.

Nitrogen oxides are essential for the formation of secondary atmospheric aerosols and of atmospheric oxidants such as ozone and the hydroxyl radical, which controls the self-cleansing capacity of the atmosphere. Nitric acid, a major oxidation product of nitrogen oxides, has traditionally been considered to be a permanent sink of nitrogen oxides. However, model studies predict higher ratios of nitric acid to nitrogen oxides in the troposphere than are observed. A 'renoxification' process that recycles nitric acid into nitrogen oxides has been proposed to reconcile observations with model studie

Nitrogen cycling microbiomes are structured by plant mycorrhizal associations with consequences for nitrogen oxide fluxes in forests.

Volatile nitrogen oxides (N2 O, NO, NO2 , HONO, …) can negatively impact climate, air quality, and human health. Using soils collected from temperate forests across the eastern United States, we show microbial communities involved in nitrogen (N) cycling are structured, in large part, by the composition of overstory trees, leading to predictable N-cycling syndromes, with consequences for emissions of volatile nitrogen oxides to air. Trees associating with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi promote soil microbial communities with higher N-cycle potential and activity, relative to microbial commu

Nitrogen Input Alters Root Exudation of Kandelia obovata and Nitrogen Cycling in Constructed Mangrove Wetlands.

The role of mangrove root exudates in mediating the nitrogen cycle, particularly under high dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) input, in coastal ecosystems remains unclear. This research investigated variation in the root exudates, and nitrogen transformation and output, in constructed mangrove wetlands planted with Kandelia obovata under high, moderate, and low nitrogen-input levels (PCWs-H, PCWs-M, and PCWs-L, respectively). PCWs-H promoted increased root density and biomass accumulation, enhancing soil nitrogen sequestration, whereas PCWs-L induced greater specific root length, specific roo

Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate - a step towards a sustainable nitrogen cycle.

Nitrate enrichment, which is mainly caused by the over-utilization of fertilisers and industrial sewage discharge, is a major global engineering challenge because of its negative influence on the environment and human health. To solve this serious problem, many technologies, such as the activated sludge method, reverse osmosis, ion exchange, adsorption, and electrodialysis, have been developed to reduce the nitrate levels in water bodies. However, the applications of these traditional techniques are limited by several drawbacks, such as a long sludge retention time, slow kinetics, and undesira

Pesticide effects on nitrogen cycle related microbial functions and community composition.

The extensive application of pesticides in agriculture raises concerns about their potential negative impact on soil microorganisms, being the key drivers of nutrient cycling. Most studies have investigated the effect of a single pesticide on a nutrient cycling in single soil type. We, for the first time, investigated the effect of 20 commercial pesticides with different mode of actions, applied at their recommended dose and five times their recommended dose, on nitrogen (N) microbial cycling in three different agricultural soils from southern Australian. Functional effects were determined by

Nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates inhibit cell cycle progression in human melanoma cells.

Cutaneous melanoma is one of the highly malignant human tumours, due to its tendency to generate early metastases and its resistance to classical chemotherapy. We recently demonstrated that pamidronate, a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate, has an antiproliferative and proapoptotic effect on different melanoma cell lines. In the present study, we compared the in vitro effects of three different bisphosphonates on human melanoma cell lines and we demonstrated that the two nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates pamidronate and zoledronate inhibited the proliferation of melanoma cells and induced ap

Nitrogen oxide cycle regulates nitric oxide levels and bacterial cell signaling.

Nitric oxide (NO) signaling controls various metabolic pathways in bacteria and higher eukaryotes. Cellular enzymes synthesize and detoxify NO; however, a mechanism that controls its cellular homeostasis has not been identified. Here, we found a nitrogen oxide cycle involving nitrate reductase (Nar) and the NO dioxygenase flavohemoglobin (Fhb), that facilitate inter-conversion of nitrate, nitrite, and NO in the actinobacterium Streptomyces coelicolor. This cycle regulates cellular NO levels, bacterial antibiotic production, and morphological differentiation. NO down-regulates Nar and up-regula

Effects of antibiotics on microbial nitrogen cycling and N2O emissions: A review.

Sulfonamides, quinolones, tetracyclines, and macrolides are the most prevalent classes of antibiotics used in both medical treatment and agriculture. The misuse of antibiotics leads to their extensive dissemination in the environment. These antibiotics can modify the structure and functionality of microbial communities, consequently impacting microbial-mediated nitrogen cycling processes including nitrification, denitrification, and anammox. They can change the relative abundance of nirK/norB contributing to the emission of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas. This review provides a compreh

Sulfur-cycling diazotrophs dominate nitrogen fixation in seagrass sediments.

Diazotrophs, the microbes capable of fixing dinitrogen, are essential for providing bioavailable nitrogen that supports marine primary production. Traditionally, nitrogen fixation in seagrass sediments has been linked primarily to heterotrophic sulfate reduction, leaving the roles of other metabolic processes, like sulfur oxidation, largely unexplored. Here, we employed metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approaches to explore the distribution, metabolic capabilities, and activity of diazotrophs in sediments dominated by the seagrass Halophila ovalis in a subtropical bay in Hong Kong. Our resul

Aerosol iodide accelerates reactive nitrogen cycling in the marine atmosphere.

Reactive nitrogen plays critical roles in atmospheric chemistry, climate, and geochemical cycles, yet its sources in the marine atmosphere, particularly the cause of the puzzling daytime peaks of nitrous acid (HONO), remain unexplained. Here we reveal that iodide enhances HONO production during aqueous nitrate photolysis by over tenfold under typical marine conditions. Laboratory experiments and molecular simulations confirm that HONO formation from nitrate photolysis is a surface-dependent process, and the extreme surface propensity of iodide facilitates nitrate enrichment at interfaces, redu

Marine toxin domoic acid alters nitrogen cycling in sediments.

As a red tide algal toxin with intense neurotoxicity distributed worldwide, domoic acid (DA) has attracted increasing concerns. In this work, the integrative analysis of metagenome and metabolome are applied to investigate the impact of DA on nitrogen cycling in coastal sediments. Here we show that DA can act as a stressor to induce the variation of nitrogen (N) cycling by altering the abundance of functional genes and electron supply. Moreover, microecology theory revealed that DA can increase the role of deterministic assembly in microbial dynamic succession, resulting in the shift of niches

Nitrogen cycle feedbacks as a control on euxinia in the mid-Proterozoic ocean.

Geochemical evidence invokes anoxic deep oceans until the terminal Neoproterozoic ~0.55 Ma, despite oxygenation of Earth's atmosphere nearly 2 Gyr earlier. Marine sediments from the intervening period suggest predominantly ferruginous (anoxic Fe(II)-rich) waters, interspersed with euxinia (anoxic H(2)S-rich conditions) along productive continental margins. Today, sustained biotic H(2)S production requires NO(3)(-) depletion because denitrifiers outcompete sulphate reducers. Thus, euxinia is rare, only occurring concurrently with (steady state) organic carbon availability when N(2)-fixers domin
