Norwalk virus and Noro virus are members of the Caliciviridae. These viruses are morphological similarity in each other and shows small round structure. These viruses also are well known as main pathogens of acute infectious gastroenteritis. Clinical features include an incubation period of 24 of 48 hours and illness period of 18 to 72 hours with vomiting and diarrhea in most patients and high secondary attack rates. Oral transmitted infection occurs contaminated water and foods. In our country, outbreak of Noro virus-related gastroenteritis are reported sometimes in hospital and nursing home

Clinical immunity to Norwalk virus in inoculated human volunteers appears to be unusual for gastroenteritis viruses, as certain individuals are repeatedly ill on long-term virus rechallenge and others remain persistently well. In these volunteers there is a paradoxical inverse correlation between the prechallenge serum (and jejunal fluid) Norwalk antibody level (measured by radioimmunoassay) and resistance to illness, suggesting that non-immunological factors, perhaps genetic, may be important in determining resistance. Most reported naturally occurring Norwalk disease outbreaks in developed n

Acute gastroenteritis due to Norwalk virus(NV), a member of the family Caliciviridae, is a common illness worldwide. NV is a human pathogen causing food-borne and water-borne diseases that occur in various epidemiological settings. The disease is mild and self-limiting and the symptomatic phase lasts 24 to 72 hours. Genetic analyses of the polymerase and the capsid protein indicate that NV is grouped into two clusters, genogroup I and genogroup II. The development of recombinant virus-like particles made a great impact on the development of diagnostic assays such as antigen ELISA and antibody

The rationale for developing a vaccine generally is made on the basis of the clinical and socioeconomical significance of a specific viral disease. The disease burden for rotavirus gastroenteritis in infants is well evaluated and several candidate vaccines for rotavirus has now been developing. An increasing recognition of the clinical significance of Norwalk virus causing acute gastroenteritis in humans of all ages, foodborne outbreaks in adults, and relatively severe gastroenteritis in children indicates that an effective vaccine would be useful. This article reviews the immunity for Norwalk

The presence of antibodies against Norwalk virus (NV) was studied in sera from different Venezuelan populations, using an enzyme immuno-assay (EIA) based on recombinant NV protein. Antibodies to NV were found in 47%-53% of urban subjects from Caracas, 83% of rural subjects from the west of the country, and 73%-93% of Amerindian subjects. The prevalences found in the rural and Amerindian groups were significantly higher than that in the urban group. Although about 50% of the children studied were seropositive for NV by the age of 5 years, only four (0.4%) of 1120 faecal samples from children wi

Major epidemic outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis result from infections with Norwalk or Norwalk-like viruses. Virus purified from stool specimens of volunteers experimentally infected with Norwalk virus was used to construct recombinant complementary DNA (cDNA) and derive clones representing most of the viral genome. The specificity of the clones was shown by their hybridization with post- (but not pre-) infection stool samples from volunteers infected with Norwalk virus and with purified Norwalk virus. A correlation was observed between the appearance of hybridization signals in stool sample

An outbreak of gastroenteritis caused by Norwalk-like virus occurred in two areas of the hospital: area 1, consisting of three adjacent and interconnected wards, with mostly elderly patients; and area 22, an acute ward in a separate building with elderly patients. In area 1, 40 patients and 20 staff were affected; in area 2, 18 patients and 14 staff were affected. Infection control measures were instituted in consultation with the government health authority. These measures did not appear to affect the course of the outbreak, but may have prevented spreads to the other wards.

Outbreaks of Norwalk gastroenteritis, which may involve persons of all ages, occur during all seasons and in various locations. Waterborne, foodborne, and person-to-person modes of transmission have been described, and secondary person-to-person transmission is common. Outbreaks generally end in about 1 week; longer outbreaks occur only when new groups of susceptible persons are introduced, usually in the setting of a persistent common source of infection. The illness is generally mild and characterized by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Vomiting is the predominant symptom am

BACKGROUND: It is described an acute gastroenteritis outbreak of probable hydric transmission in Ontinyent (Valencia). It was declared on the 31st of January, 1992 and affected 3541 people according to the declaration done by the sanitary services who attended the patients. The clinical situation was characterized by the presence of profuse and watery diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and fever or febricula.
METHODS: A preliminary study of the cases has been done, the information being treated with the classical method of descriptive epidemiology and a later study of the transversal

An epidemic of nonbacterial gastroenteritis affected nearly 100 students at a college campus in Jefferson County, Alabama. The outbreak closely resembled food poisoning, since there was a rapid occurrence of multiple cases within a short period. Vomiting occurred in 79% and diarrhea in 64%; fever was uncommon. We found a significant association between the illness and the eating of lettuce at a meal one day before the outbreak began. Paired serologic specimens showed evidence of Norwalk virus infection. Twenty acutely ill students had leukocytosis (mean WBC 12,780/cu mm) and lymphopenia--a pat

BACKGROUND: Noroviruses are a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Mucosal and cellular immune responses remain poorly understood, with most studies of noroviruses having focused on serological responses to infection.
METHODS: We used saliva, feces, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells collected from persons who were administered Norwalk virus (NV) to characterize mucosal (salivary and fecal immunoglobulin A [IgA]) and cellular (NV-specific IgA and immunoglobulin G [IgG] antibody-secreting cells and total and NV-specific IgA and IgG memory B cells) immune responses following in

In May and June 1999, an outbreak of acute gastrointestinal illness occurred among long-distance hikers on the Appalachian Trail between Catawba and Troutville, Virginia. An investigation found that 45 out of 70 hikers had become ill within two days of arriving in Catawba, Virginia. Water samples were collected from a general store frequented by the hikers and from several nearby buildings and a popular all-you-can-eat restaurant. Symptoms were consistent with those caused by Norwalk-like viruses, and laboratory diagnosis detected Norwalk-like viruses in stool and serum specimens. People who c

BACKGROUND: Noroviruses cause epidemic and sporadic acute gastroenteritis. No vaccine is available to prevent norovirus illness or infection.
METHODS: We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial to assess the safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy of an investigational, intranasally delivered norovirus viruslike particle (VLP) vaccine (with chitosan and monophosphoryl lipid A as adjuvants) to prevent acute viral gastroenteritis after challenge with a homologous viral strain, Norwalk virus (genotype GI.1). Healthy adults 18 to 50 years of age received two doses

BACKGROUND: During a college football game in Florida, diarrhea and vomiting developed in many of the members of a North Carolina team. The next day, similar symptoms developed in some of the players on the opposing team.
METHODS: We interviewed those who ate the five meals served to the North Carolina team before the game and some of the players on the opposing team who became ill. Patients with primary cases were members or staff of the team who had vomiting or diarrhea at least 10 hours after but no more than 50 hours after eating a box lunch served the day before the game. Patients with s

Norwalk virus infection was sought in 48 US, 49 Puerto Rican, and 27 Mexican adults attending medical school in Guadalajara (Mexico) who were enrolled in a 2-year longitudinal study. Serum specimens were collected quarterly and as acute- and convalescent-phase samples around episodes of gastroenteritis. The reciprocal Norwalk virus geometric mean titer (GMT) for Puerto Rican students (567) was significantly higher than that of the US students overall (294; P less than .001) and for four of nine quarterly periods. The reciprocal Norwalk GMT for Mexican students (748) was also significantly high

Viruses that infect cells in the gastrointestinal tract are well suited for examining the immune response to oral delivery of antigen and for exploring the advantages and pitfalls of oral vaccines. Norwalk virus (NV) (family Caliciviridae, genus Calicivirus) causes acute gastroenteritis in all age groups. The NV capsid is composed of 180 copies of a single 58000 molecular weight protein which spontaneously forms virus-like particles (VLPs) that can be purified in extremely high yields (22 mg per 300 ml culture) when produced using the baculovirus expression system. We are testing the potential

An outbreak of acute gastroenteritis occurred in the nurses' hostel of a civil hospital in Delhi, after a farewell party involving 130 nurses and some of the housekeeping staff. All affected persons had eaten salad sandwiches at the party. Stool samples were collected from six of these patients on the second day of infection. All six samples, when tested for the presence of common bacteria, parasites, and rotavirus, were found to be negative. The clinical features of this outbreak matched the criteria set for outbreaks caused by Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs). Reverse transcription-polymerase cha

Within 1 week four separate incidents of gastroenteritis presumed to be foodborne were reported by guests of a Winnipeg hotel. Investigation revealed poor food-handling practices and illness among the kitchen staff. Elevated bacterial counts and Escherichia coli were found in 15 of 24 samples of food tested, and Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 2 pastry samples. Culture of 14 stool samples for bacteria yielded Clostridium perfringens in 1 sample from a staff member and coagulase-positive S. aureus in 2 samples from staff members and 3 from guests. All of the S. aureus isolates were none
