Reflex occipital lobe epilepsy.

Photosensitivity is a typical feature of photosensitive epilepsy which is usually considered a form of idiopathic generalized epilepsy. Part … ter treatment; in the others seizure control was achieved with monotherapy. We conclude that reflex occipital lobe epilepsy is an idiopathic form of the benign partial epilepsies, which may overlap with one another.

Symptomatic occipital lobe epilepsy.

Symptomatic occipital lobe epilepsy is increasingly recognized among patients with partial-onset seizures. Although traditional clinical and electroencephalographic criteria had defined occipital lobe epilepsy in the past, new neuroimaging techniques and the recognition of specific syndromes associated with occipital lobe epilepsy have improved the diagnosis and management of these patients. These syndromes include, among others, lesional occipital lobe epilepsy (congenital vs. acquired), MELAS, and epilepsy with bilateral occipital calcifications. The diagnosis of symptomatic occipital lobe e…

[An operated case of intractable occipital lobe epilepsy associated with calcification in the occipital lobe].

We reported a 20-year-old female of intractable occipital lobe epilepsy associated with calcification in the left occipital lobe. She developed seizures since 2 years old and electroencephalography showed paroxysmal activities on the left occipital area. At 8 years old, partial resection of the lesion and interictal spike focus under intraoperative corticography guidance was performed, but the favorable seizure outcome was not obtained. At the age of 20 years old, the frequency of her seizures has increased and admitted to our department. Preoperative evaluation with chronic invasive subdural …

Occipital lobe epilepsy: a chronic condition related to transient occipital lobe involvement in eclampsia.

Eleven hours and 6 days, respectively, after childbirth 2 women exhibited hypertension and paroxysmal visual disturbances followed by tonic-clonic seizures and no other preeclamptic signs. Both developed partial epilepsy with occipital lobe seizures with no other neurologic defects. Neuroimaging showed no lesion during either the acute episode or 3-5 year follow-up. Selective vulnerability of the occipital lobes during eclamptic hypertensive encephalopathy was the probable pathophysiologic mechanism. Aggressive antihypertensive treatment during the acute phase may have exacerbated the risk of …

[Occipital lobe epilepsy in adults].

Five hundreds and thirty-six patients, aged from 19 to 50 years, have been studied. Occipital lobe epilepsy (OLE) have been diagnosed in 22 (4,1%) of cases. The study included evaluation of anamnesis, clinical and neurological examination, routine EEG and/or video-EEG monitoring and MRI of the brain. Duration of the study was 1-5 years (on average 3 years). The most typical clinical features were visual phenomena, mostly "irritation symptoms" represented by elementary hallucinations. Visual "symptoms of loss" (scotomas, amaurosis) are associated with ineffectiveness of antiepileptic drugs. The…

Occipital lobe infarctions are different.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that occipital lobe infarctions differ from infarctions in other locations as to etiology, risk factors and prognosis among young adults. METHODS: Location, etiology, risk factors and long-term outcome were evaluated among all young adults 15-49 years suffering from cerebral infarction in Hordaland County, Norway between 1988 and 1997. RESULTS: The following variables were more frequent among patients with occipital lobe infarction compared with patients with infarctions located elsewhere: younger age (P < 0.001), female sex (P = 0.016), prothrombotic state (P = 0…

Idiopathic photosensitive occipital lobe epilepsy.

We studied 10 neurologically normal patients (8 females, 2 males) aged 8-30 years (mean 17 years) who had recurrent episodes if visually induced occipital seizures. Television and computer screens were the main triggers. Seizure onset occurred between the ages of 5 and 17 years (mean 11 years). All seizures were stimulus related and began with elementary visual symptoms, followed in most patients by a slow clustering of cephalic pain, epigastric discomfort, and vomiting, with either normal of only mildly impaired responsiveness. EEG features included normal background activity, occipital spike

Hyperglycemia-induced Occipital Lobe Seizures.

Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS) and nonketotic hyperglycemia (NKH) are recognized complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus that can cause seizures. Occipital lobe seizures with isolated visual symptoms are rare and underrecognized. We present the case of a 70-year-old male with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes who experienced sudden onset of positive visual phenomena and a right inferior visual field defect. The patient had a hemoglobin A1c > 14% (∼130 mmol/mol) (reference range: < 6.5%; < 48 mmol/mol), no ketones, a normal anion gap, and a normal serum osmolality. Brain magnetic resonance…

Hyperglycaemia-related occipital lobe seizures.

Recognition of the role of hyperglycaemia in seizures is vital, because they tend to refractory to antiepileptic drugs and respond to insulin therapy and hydration.

Occipital lobe seizures and epilepsies.

Occipital lobe epilepsies (OLEs) manifest with occipital seizures from an epileptic focus within the occipital lobes. Ictal clinical symptoms are mainly visual and oculomotor. Elementary visual hallucinations are common and characteristic. Postictal headache occurs in more than half of patients (epilepsy-migraine sequence). Electroencephalography (EEG) is of significant diagnostic value, but certain limitations should be recognized. Occipital spikes and/or occipital paroxysms either spontaneous or photically induced are the main interictal EEG abnormalities in idiopathic OLE. However, occipita…

Alterations of the occipital lobe in schizophrenia.

The relationship of the occipital lobe of the brain with schizophrenia is not commonly studied; however, this topic is considered an essential subject matter among clinicians and scientists. We conducted this systematic review to elaborate the relationship in depth. We found that most schizophrenic patients show normal occipital anatomy and physiology, a minority showed dwindled values, and some demonstrated augmented function and structure. The findings are laborious to incorporate within single disease models that present the involvement of the occipital lobe in schizophrenia. Schizophrenia …

[Morphological imagery of the occipital lobe].

After reviewing the anatomical and functional aspects of the occipital lobe, the authors detail its gyral and sulcal anatomy using MRI in the three planes, with particular attention given to the localization of the calcarine fissure.
