Occupational nerve injuries span a broad array of pathologies and contribute toward functional limitation, disability, and economic impact. Early and accurate recognition, treatment, and management of workplace factors rely on a thorough understanding of the anatomic and biomechanical factors that drive nerve injury. This review explores the interplay between anatomy, biomechanics, and nerve pathology common to occupational nerve injury and provides the treating physician with a rational, evidence-based approach to diagnosis and to occupational aspects of management. Assessment of potential oc

As the first step in evaluation of the magnitude of the occupational injuries (OIs) in our community, we focused on hospital records of more than 8400 hospitalized trauma patients in six large university hospitals during 13 months of data gathering process. Fourteen percent of 8426 trauma patients had OIs (1180 cases) and 95% of them were male. Adults 19-39 years comprised 63% of the patients. Eleven percent of the patients were 18 years old or younger. Construction workers (26%), simple workers (26%), and industrial workers (17%) comprised nearly 70% of the OIs. Falls (39%) and striking by bl

PURPOSE: Occupational ocular trauma is an important cause of acquired monocular blindness in a rapidly industrialising country like India. Knowledge of the epidemiology of occupational eye injuries is essential to formulate viable industrial safety measures.
METHOD: We retrospectively reviewed all patients with occupational open globe injuries between 1994 and 1998. We documented the circumstances of the injuries, their clinical findings and the use of appropriate protective eyewear at the time of the injury. The visual acuity 6 months after the injury was the final outcome measure.

Evaluation of 3,096 accidents occurred during occupational activity in industry reveals the following results: most of the injuries of men are more serious than these of women. Ranking the injured parts of the body shows that injuries of the hand are most frequent. Moreover ranking the injured parts of the body as well as the nature of injuries reveals that there are notable differences between the two sexes.

Electrical injuries are an uncommon but very destructive type of burn, with serious complications and disabilities for the victims. This study was conducted due to the importance of understanding the epidemiology of electrical accidents in planning to prevent their occurrence. This is a retrospective cross-sectional study that was performed on patients with electrical burns referred to Shahid Motahari Educational and Medical Center from 2017 to 2018. Patients' information was entered in the researcher-made information registration form, including demographic and accident-related information. I

Data from the annual Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), provide information on fatal occupational injuries that occur in the United States. CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) uses CFOI data to support research and evaluation activities related to the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA), a partnership between the public and private sectors to encourage workplace safety and health research. Since 1992, when BLS first introduced CFOI, BLS has annually reported data on fatal occupational injurie

OBJECTIVES: Although compensation for occupational injuries and diseases is guaranteed in almost all nations, countries vary greatly with respect to how they organize workers' compensation systems. In this paper, we focus on three aspects of workers' compensation insurance in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries - types of systems, employers' funding mechanisms, and coverage for injured workers - and their impacts on the actual frequencies of occupational injuries and diseases.
METHODS: We estimated a panel data fixed effect model with cross-country OECD and

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive surveillance system for occupational injuries to adolescents does not exist in Texas, as in most states. Therefore, the magnitude, severity, nature, and source of injuries to working adolescents have not been well described in Texas.
METHODS: The investigators used three data sources to investigate work-related injuries and deaths in Texas: (1) Texas Workers' Compensation Commission (TWCC) claims data from 1991 through April 1996; (2) 1993 TWCC/Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses; and (3) work-related fatalities ide

Most spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are the result of motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). There are no published reports specifically addressing SCIs that occur in the workplace. We report a cohort survey study examining the frequency and etiology of SCI in the workplace. Through a cooperative program, an evaluation of all SCIs seen in Colorado during a 5 1/2-year period (January 1, 1986 through June 6, 1991) is presented. We report a detailed analysis of specific data of all SCIs occurring in the workplace. There were a total of 566, with 74 (13.1%) due to injuries that occurred during the course of

OBJECTIVE: To characterize occupational injuries of aquaculture workers in Washington State.
METHODS: We reviewed accepted Washington State workers' compensation claims from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2014. Trends in employment, worker demographics (including age, sex, and body mass index), claim rate, and injury characteristics were summarized for accepted claims in the Washington State risk classes that include aquaculture workers.
RESULTS: During the nine-year study period, there were 1,180 accepted claims, 836 (65.1%) were medical-aid only and 344 (26.8%) were compensable. Most comm

OBJECTIVES: Using the social-ecological model, we hypothesized that the home residences of injured workers would be clustered predictably and geographically.
METHODS: We linked health care and publicly available datasets by home zip code for traumatically injured workers in Illinois from 2000 to 2009. We calculated numbers and rates of injuries, determined the spatial relationships, and developed 3 models.
RESULTS: Among the 23 200 occupational injuries, 80% of cases were located in 20% of zip codes and clustered in 10 locations. After component analysis, numbers and clusters of injuries cor

BACKGROUND: We aimed to identify the characteristics, causes and rates of injuries associated with occupational accidents.
METHODS: Patients who presented to the Emergency Department due to injuries occurring as a result of occupational accidents were determined retrospectively. In occupational injuries, several parameters were evaluated, such as gender, occurrence mechanism, injury type, injury localization, severity score of the injury, and the type of profession.
RESULTS: The number of occupational injury admissions in the Emergency Departments of our two centers during 2006 was 1038. Mea

In the period 1988-1997 a series of 1462 patients aged 15 years or older with non-occupational fall injuries from ladders or scaffolds were studied. We registered 1402 ladder falls and 60 scaffold falls. The mean age was 50 years, and 1052 were males. The mean annual incidence rate was 1.18 per 1000 inhabitants/year for males and 0.41 per 1000 inhabitants/year for females. A rise in the annual incidence rates with increasing age were observed for both males and females, whereas no trend in the annual incidence rates for each of the ten years studied were observed. About 1/5 of the patients wer

The authors analysed 115 victims of limb injuries due to traffic accidents, to compare the medico-legal assessment by the rate of permanent disability (PD) with a tridimensional evaluation of the damage (lesion, function and situation), from a professional aspect. There was a high correlation between PD and lesional and functional sequelae. However, in professional situations only with those who were working full-time was there a high correlation with PD. PD gives only a lesional assessment. The authors propose a professional damage evaluation which considers the handicap of the individual in

According to Matheson the current definition of work capacity evaluation is that it is "a process of measuring and developing an individual's capacity to dependably sustain performance in response to broadly defined work demands." This article will give a broad overview of the work capacity evaluation as it relates to hand injuries. Included in the discussion will be the history and philosophy of work capacity evaluation, as well as the application of the evaluation process to hand-injured patients.

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. Department of Defense employs more musicians than any other organization in the USA with over 6,000 musicians employed. Musculoskeletal pathologies, behavioral health disorders, hearing loss, and dystonias account for the majority of reasons a musician seek medical care. The aim of this study is to review recent medical literature documenting occupational hazards in musicians.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Authors performed a literature review of publications related to musician performance-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) and performance-related pain (PRP), behaviora
