Ochrobactrum anthropi: a rare cause of pneumonia.

Ochrobactrum anthropi, a Gram-negative bacillus, is an unusual human pathogen. It has been implicated primarily in catheter-related bloodstream infections. Sporadic cases of infection at other body sites have been reported. Pneumonia, however, is an exceedingly rare clinical manifestation; only one case has been reported in the medical literature so far. We present another case of lower respiratory tract infection secondary to O. anthropi in a patient who was critically ill, but recovered with a favorable outcome. We have provided an overview of clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatmen

Brucella vertebral osteomyelitis misidentified as an Ochrobactrum anthropi infection.

Ochrobactrum anthropi is a Gram-negative bacillus widely distributed in nature. It is a low virulence and low pathogenic microorganism and human infection by this agent is considered rare. This microorganism can cause bacteremia and in some cases can lead to osteomyelitis and endocarditis. Included in Brucellaceae family, this bacterium is phenotypically and genetically closely related to the Brucella genus and may be misidentified by rapid identification systems. The authors describe a patient admitted to the Infectious Diseases Department with vertebral osteomyelitis initially identified as

Isolation and characterization of Ochrobactrum anthropi and Ochrobactrum pecoris from caecal content of commercial turkeys.

Two Gram negative, micro-aerophilic, non-motile and non-spore-forming coccoid bacteria were isolated from female turkey caecal samples collected from a slaughterhouse. The biochemical reaction profiles (API 20 E and API 20 NE) typed both strains as Ochrobactrum anthropi. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene and recA gene sequence similarities the strains were identified as O. anthropi and Ochrobactrum pecoris, respectively. Both strains were highly resistant against beta-lactam antibiotics, chloramphenicol and sulphonamides but variable in susceptibility to ciprofloxacin, gentamicin and tetracycline.

Complete Genome Assembly of Reference Strain Ochrobactrum anthropi ATCC 49687.

Ochrobactrum anthropi is an occasional cause of nosocomial infections; however, interest in the organism lies in its phylogenetic proximity to the genus Brucella. Here, we present the 4.9-Mb finished genome of Ochrobactrum anthropi ATCC 49687, most commonly used as an exclusionary reference organism.

Ochrobactrum anthropi Causing Fournier's Gangrene: A Report of a Rare Case.

Fournier's gangrene is a form of necrotizing fasciitis that affects the penis, scrotum, or vulva. Novel bacteria for this type of infection include both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Rarely, other microorganisms can be the causative agent of the infection. Ochrobactrum anthropi is an aerobic, gram-negative, opportunistic infection that often affects orthopedic hardware and has been described as a pathogen within the cornea, as well. This case report describes a patient presenting with Fournier's gangrene in which the causative pathogen was identified via tissue culture as O. anthropi that wa

Bioremediation of Cr(VI) and immobilization as Cr(III) by Ochrobactrum anthropi.

Bioremediation of Cr(VI) through reduction relies on the notion that the produced Cr(III) may be precipitated or efficiently immobilized. However, recent reports suggest that soluble organo-Cr(III) complexes are present in various chromate-reducing bacterial systems. This work was designed to explore the factors that affect the immobilization of Cr(III) in the Ochrobactrum anthropi system. X-ray absorption fine structure analysis on the cell debris clearly verified that coordination of Cr(III) occurs on the surfaces via the chelating coordination with carboxyl- and amido-functional groups. How

Brucella suis bacteremia misidentified as Ochrobactrum anthropi by the VITEK 2 system.

Ochrobactrum and Brucella are genetically related genera of the family Brucellaceae, sharing 98.8% rRNA similarity. Because of their phenotypic similarity, Ochrobactrum can be miscoded as Brucella by automated identification systems. The misidentification on blood cultures (BCs) of B. suis as O. anthropi by the VITEK 2 system is herein described. A 67-year-old male with a prosthetic mitral valve and fever was admitted with bacteremia due to a Gram-negative coccobacillus identified as O. anthropi by VITEK 2. The patient's fever persisted along with positive blood cultures despite specific antim

Ochrobactrum anthropi catheter-related bloodstream infection: the first case report in malaysia.

A 60-year old Malay man presented with an intermittent lowgrade fever for 3 days and worsening of right ankle ulcers. He was known to have ischaemic heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 2, hypertension and end stage renal failure and was on regular haemodialysis. The organisms isolated from the peripheral and central blood specimens were identified as Ochrobactrum anthropi, a rarely encountered gramnegative bacillus with a unique antibiotic susceptibility profile. His condition improved after removal of the catheters and administration of antibiotic therapy. This case report highlights the im

Ribosomal RNA sequence analysis of Brucella infection misidentified as Ochrobactrum anthropi infection.

A Brucella isolate was identified from purulent material collected during a hip surgery. Two previous blood cultures from the same patient yielded Ochrobactrum anthropi. After rRNA sequencing, all the isolates were identified as Brucella species and subsequently serotyped as Brucella suis. Misidentification of Brucella species remains a problem with bacterial identification systems.

Ochrobactrum anthropi infection following corneal transplantation -a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Ochrobactrum anthropi is widely distributed and primarily infects patients with compromised immune functions . Historically, O. anthropi has been considered to possess low toxicity and pathogenicity; however, recent studies suggest that it may in fact cause severe purulent infections. In this case study, we examine a case of O. anthropi infection following corneal transplantation, exploring the occurrence and outcomes of such post-operative infections. CASE PRESENTATION: A retrospective analysis of cases involved examinations, genetic testing for diagnosis, and subsequent treatmen

Outbreak of Achromobacter xylosoxidans and Ochrobactrum anthropi Infections after Prostate Biopsies, France, 2014.

We report an outbreak of healthcare-associated prostatitis involving rare environmental pathogens in immunocompetent patients undergoing transrectal prostate biopsies at Hôpital Édouard Herriot (Lyon, France) during August 13-October 10, 2014. Despite a fluoroquinolone-based prophylaxis, 5 patients were infected with Achromobacter xylosoxidans and 3 with Ochrobactrum anthropi, which has not been reported as pathogenic in nonimmunocompromised persons. All patients recovered fully. Analysis of the outbreak included case investigation, case-control study, biopsy procedure review, microbiologic te

Novel denitrifying bacterium Ochrobactrum anthropi YD50.2 tolerates high levels of reactive nitrogen oxides.

Most studies of bacterial denitrification have used nitrate (NO3-) as the first electron acceptor, whereas relatively less is understood about nitrite (NO2-) denitrification. We isolated novel bacteria that proliferated in the presence of high levels of NO2- (72 mM). Strain YD50.2, among several isolates, was taxonomically positioned within the alpha subclass of Proteobacteria and identified as Ochrobactrum anthropi YD50.2. This strain denitrified NO2-, as well as NO3-. The gene clusters for denitrification (nar, nir, nor, and nos) were cloned from O. anthropi YD50.2, in which the nir and nor

Specific detection and differentiation of Ochrobactrum anthropi, Ochrobactrum intermedium and Brucella spp. by a multi-primer PCR that targets the recA gene.

Ochrobactrum anthropi, Ochrobactrum intermedium and Brucella spp. are phenotypically and genetically closely related pathogens that may cause disease with similar clinical presentation. Consequently, difficulties in their identification and differentiation have been reported. In this study, a sensitive recA gene-based multi-primer single-target PCR (MP-ST-PCR) was developed that allowed the specific detection and differentiation of these clinically relevant pathogens. The specificity of the assay was evaluated using a representative panel of 50 O. anthropi and 16 O. intermedium strains and the
