The International journal of psycho-analysis1999eng
The author considers that the Oedipus of Sophocles' drama, who kills his biological father and marries his biological mother, is an illustration of the failure to work through the complex named after him. She draws attention to the contrast between the obscurity that surrounds the hero's adoptive parents and the notoriety of their biological counterparts arguing that the former are equally important in the universal oedipal fantasy. In her view the fact that Oedipus has two sets of parents--abandoning and adopting respectively--is significant in that the resulting dichotomisation of the parent

Recent observations in the behavioral and neurosciences have raised questions about the ubiquity of the oedipus complex as well as about its significance for psychological development. The authors argue that the construct Freud called the oedipus complex in males is best examined in its component parts. One component--the incestuous wish--does not occur in all individuals. Another component--the boy's urge to engage competitively with other male figures, including the father--does appear to be biologically based in testosterone's effect on the brain and to be manifested in childhood rough and

Is mans fate irrevocable predetermined or have we a certain amout of free will? We assume, that although restricted by his own developed character, and given circumstances, man has a choice and is capable to influence his destiny. According to Freud our actions and behaviour are often unconsciously motivated and frequently incomprehensible for ourselves. They are then independent of our "will" and capacity of decision--making. Freud observes rightly the ambivalence of seelings between father and son, mother and daughter and regards this as the essential factor for the character-formation of th

Going along with Laplanche's assumption that there is no endogenous sexuality, the authors discuss Freud's concepts of the female Oedipus complex and penis envy and some of its proposed alternatives. The female oedipal conflict turns out to be the outcome of a projective identification with the Oedipus complexes of the mother and father. In the context of the rivalry with the mother, penis envy refers to the maternal power over the father's penis that the daughter wants to have in herself, while, in the context of the rivalry with the father, penis envy arises from the jealousy of the father's

The Oedipus complex is indeed a central organizing focus of human development. Given the opportunity to review psychoanalytic work illustrative of how this concept influences clinical theory and technique, patches of common ground and of significant differences are described. The patient discussed was in the termination phase of a very long analysis, resulting in a concentration and telescoping of the three weeks of reported material from six months prior to termination. This facilitated the elucidation of similarities and differences in viewing and handling manifestations of resistance, trans

The authors discuss the psychoanalytic treatment of Little Hans, drawing on the perspective offered by Laplanche's concept of "enigmatic messages," which they believe can contribute to a better understanding of this case history. They conclude that Little Hans's positive Oedipus complex conceals his negative Oedipus complex in which he represents his parents' oedipal problems in a distorted fashion. They demonstrate the way his parents project aspects of these problems into Hans's psyche, where his subsequent identifications with them lead to substitutive formations. They trace the course of L

This article develops ideas set out in a previous study on the "archaic matrix of the Oedipus complex" versus the fully developed Oedipus complex (their similarities and their differences), applying these to a study of the psychoanalytic situation. The central hypothesis is that there is a correspondence between the psychoanalytic situation and the structure of the mental apparatus. The author supposes that our perception of the world is intimately linked to the primary maternal relationship, to our wish to fuse with the mother once more, and to the accompanying fear such a wish inspires. Inoculation of S. oedipus marmosets with white blood cells and platelets from another species of marmosets, S. fuscicollis, led to an acute and fatal thrombocytopenia. Antibody in the recipients to the immunizing platelets was found by agglutination and indirect immunofluorescence; also, serum from the afflicted animals passively induced thrombocytopenia in S. fuscicollis marmosets. Similar inoculations of S. oedipus marmosets with platelet-free white blood cell preparations from the same donors were without any clinical effect; also, immunization with autologous, allogeneic (unrelated S. oedi

The New World primate species Saguinus oedipus, the cotton-top tamarin, has a high incidence of spontaneously occurring adenocarcinoma of the colon and develops a fatal lymphoproliferative syndrome following infection with various herpes viruses. Some investigators have linked such disease susceptibilities to abnormalities in the immune function of the cotton-top tamarin that may result from the natural bone marrow chimerism that occurs in this species. The present studies were initiated to establish conditions for studying the immune system of these primates and to assess the integrity of thi

This essay studies the physical shape, character and fate of Oedipus, applying relevant and current medical scientific criteria. The abuses he suffered during childhood play an important role in this context. The name Oedipus is usually translated as "swollen foot", but according to various etymological sources, the name can be interpreted in different ways. One of these interpretations alludes to fact that it was easy for the hero to solve the riddle of the sphinx because its key message addressed an orthopedic issue as it was dealing with the function of the feet. During Oedipus' life, he su

Freud's "Fragment of an Analysis of a Case of Hysteria" stands as one of his most extensive case studies, weaving together his explorations of the Oedipus complex, dream analysis, and hysteria. In this study, I propose an alternative lens through which to interpret the case: as a Bildungsroman. While ostensibly focused on Dora, the analysand, and her journey to maturity, the narrative occasionally appears to be overshadowed by Freud's own experiences and story. I contend that this overtaking of Dora's narrative is facilitated by both thematic and linguistic factors. Additionally, I examine the

Most psychoanalytic writers believe that both asthma and sexual impotence depend on fixations at the early stages of the Oedipus complex. Through psychoanalytic study of patients with both disorders, the author believes that this problem may be considered from another angle whereby the fixation of sexual impotence is situated at the early stages of the Oedipus complex, while asthma depends on fixations at the level of the breast although its character is also triangular. It is the author's opinion that in studying the psycho-pathogenesis of these afflictions it is important to distinguish betw

We are not born subject but become one, in a two-and-fro process between what is played out on the intrapsychic stage and the field of intersubjectivation. The author proposes to examine two of the main movements of psychic life brought into play in this process. In the domain of the 'subjectivating link', becoming a subject depends on the relationship with another, authentically taken into account as a desiring subject and not simply as an object for oneself. In the course of history, this intersubjectivation is only internalized as a lasting preconscious predisposition if sufficient trust is

"The Darker Side of Fatherhood" is intended as a clinical sequel to an earlier article, "Oedipus Revisited: Laius and the 'Laius Complex'". After briefly summarizing the allegorical implications of the various forgotten Oedipus myths and the father's fateful role within the Theban tragedy, this paper elaborates on those pederastic and filicidal inclinations that I believe to be universal among fathers. When such wishes are subject to primal repression, they enhance adaptation, fueling a father's aggressive dialogue with sons and daughters from infancy through the oedipal era into adolescence.

This essay aims to identify some fascinating overlaps in Loewald's and Winnicott's perspectives on the emergence of autonomy in tandem with a capacity for genuine two-person engagement. Comparing Loewald's "The Waning of the Oedipus Complex" and Winnicott's "The Use of the Object and Relating through Identifications," I address the striking similarities (and some differences) in the two theorists' developmental and clinical visions. Each moved psychoanalytic theorizing away from a one-person perspective on development and toward one lodged in mutuality.

An oedipal relationship between a girl and her grandfather might be named the "Little Nell Complex" after Dickens' description of the close relationship between thirteen year old Little Nell and her grandfather in "The Old Curiosity Shop". A clinical illustration of a Little Nell Complex is described in a seventeen year old girl who presented with depression following the death of her grandmother. Oedipal complexes existing between the patient and her parents, the patient and her grandparents, and between the patient's mother and her parents, are described. In offering notations the "erotic" c
