Optical trapping with nanostructured optical fibers and motility analysis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The study of bacteria swimming behavior or their interaction with other bacteria or cells requires an efficient and flexible tool for bacteria manipulation. Optical tweezers have been shown to be perfectly adapted for this task. Here we report optical trapping of pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria using optical fiber tweezers with dedicated nanostructured optical fibers. Well-aligned straight chains of up to ten bacteria were observed with optical fiber tips, whereas contactless trapping was realized at distances of 100 and 45 µm for Fresnel lens fibers and TIROFs, respectively. Very eff

Cyclodestructive procedures. II. Optical fibers, endoscopy, physics: a review.

Methods used in laser destructive procedures are detailed. While in noncontact procedures laser energy is delivered via the optics of a slitlamp, often enhanced by contact lenses, the contact method takes advantage of optical fibers for the delivery of energy. Endpieces such as hemispherical or microlens probes enhance the cyclodestructive effect and/or allow the dose of laser energy to be reduced. Laser energy may also be delivered under direct view by endoscopic systems. Advances in laser cyclodestruction are possible by studying the physical effects.

Biopolymer Optical Fibers for High-Sensitivity Quantitative Humidity Monitoring.

Because of their tunable refractive index and surface functionalities, biopolymers have emerged as excellent candidates for the fabrication of sustainable optical fibers. To date, the focus has been on identifying suitable biopolymers for optical fiber fabrication and their associated waveguiding properties. Despite a few studies showing their potential for short-distance applications and humidity sensing, the quantitative sensing of environmental parameters using biopolymer optical fibers has not been reported. Herein, for the first time, we report the quantitative determination of relative h

Rapid Molecular Diagnostic Sensor Based on Ball-Lensed Optical Fibers.

Given the fatal health conditions caused by emerging infectious pathogens, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, their rapid diagnosis is required for preventing secondary infections and guiding correct treatments. Although various molecular diagnostic methods based on nucleic acid amplification have been suggested as gold standards for identifying different species, these methods are not suitable for the rapid diagnosis of pathogens owing to their long result acquisition times and complexity. In this study, we developed a rapid bio-optical sensor that uses a ball-lensed opt

Enzyme-enhanced fluorescence detection of DNA on etched optical fibers.

A novel DNA biosensor based on enzyme-enhanced fluorescence detection on etched optical fibers was developed. The hybridization complex of DNA probe and biotinylated target was formed on the etched optical fiber, and was then bound with streptavidin labeled horseradish peroxidase (streptavidin-HRP). The target DNA was quantified through the fluorescent detection of bi-p,p'-4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (DBDA) generated from the substrate 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (p-HPA) under the catalysis of HRP, with a detection limit of 1 pM and a linear range from 1.69 pM to 169 pM. It is facile to regenera

Ultra-stretchable elastomeric suspended-core optical fibers for wearable sensing applications.

Stretchable optical fibers are emerging as a promising platform for wearable sensing applications, owing to their exceptional flexibility, high sensitivity, and inherent immunity to electromagnetic interference. Although current research primarily concentrates on conventional step-index configurations, microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) with precisely engineered architectures offer unprecedented design flexibility and functional versatility. Nevertheless, the fabrication of such advanced fiber structures poses significant technical challenges. This study introduces a demonstration of an ela

Skin-Inspired Monolithic Multimodal Optical Fibers via Thermochromic Microcapsule-Doped Elastomers.

Inspired by human skin, we developed a monolithic POF sensor for temperature, pressure, and bending. Red, yellow, and green thermochromic microcapsules were embedded in a PDMS matrix. Temperature was detected through wavelength-selective absorption, with a maximum sensitivity of 9.28%/°C. Pressure and bending were measured through deformation-induced radiation loss and macrobending loss, with sensitivities of 116.83%/mm and 0.48%/deg, respectively. Temperature and mechanical signals exhibit two distinct spectral responses: wavelength-selective thermal modulation and broadband mechanical attenu

Guidance of retinal fibers in the optic chiasm.

At the optic chiasm of vertebrates, there occurs a sharp divergence in the destination of retinal ganglion cell axons as they are on their way to more central targets. Recent studies in the mouse indicate that the growth cones of each set of fibers diverge close to the midline of the optic chiasm, at the borders of a palisade of immature radial glia. Static and dynamic views of retinal growth cones in this decision region reveal that extensive exploratory behavior and selective retraction of parts of the growing tips of uncrossed fibers, in response to cellular cues at the midline, is a major

Stretchable distributed fiber-optic sensors.

Silica-based distributed fiber-optic sensor (DFOS) systems have been a powerful tool for sensing strain, pressure, vibration, acceleration, temperature, and humidity in inextensible structures. DFOS systems, however, are incompatible with the large strains associated with soft robotics and stretchable electronics. We develop a sensor composed of parallel assemblies of elastomeric lightguides that incorporate continuum or discrete chromatic patterns. By exploiting a combination of frustrated total internal reflection and absorption, stretchable DFOSs can distinguish and measure the locations, m

Activation of Organic Photovoltaic Light Detectors Using Bend Leakage from Optical Fibers.

This work investigates the detection and subsequent utilization of leaked light from bends in a silica optical fiber using organic photovoltaic detectors. The optic power lost by single mode and multimode silica optical fibers was calibrated for bend radii between 1 and 7 mm for 532 and 633 nm light, exhibiting excellent agreement with previous theoretical solutions. The spatial location of maximum power leakage on the exterior of the fiber was found to exist in the same plane as the fiber, with a 10° offset from the normal. Two different organic photovoltaic detectors fabricated using a poly(

An Intrinsic Optical Fiber Uric Acid Sensor Using a Molecularly Imprinted Chitosan Membrane-Coated Optical Fiber as a Transducer.

An intrinsic optical fiber uric acid (UA) sensor has been developed using a molecularly imprinted chitosan (MIC) membrane-coated optical fiber as a transducer. The MIC was prepared by crosslinking chitosan with glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking reagent and UA as the template molecule. After an MIC membrane was coated on the surface of a bent optical fiber probe (BOFP), the template UA molecules were washed out of the membrane by using a diluted ammonia solution (0.10 M). This MIC membrane-coated BOFP was deployed into a sample solution for analyzing UA concentration. UA in the sample solution w

An optical fiber caffeine sensor using a molecularly imprinted polymethacrylic acid membrane coated on optical fiber surface as a transducer.

Caffeine is a neurotransmitter, important to human health. This compound exists in many food products, has been added to soft drinks, pharmaceutical drugs. For many applications, a field deployable technique for quick detecting caffeine is attractive. In this paper, we report a selective optical fiber caffeine sensor using a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) membrane as a transducer. The membrane extracts/concentrate caffeine from sample solutions significantly improved sensor's sensitivity with a 95 times sensitivity improvement. The sensor achieved a detection limit of 2.0 μg/mL. This sens

Optical Method for the Detection of Viral RNA Using an Optical Fiber Sensor.

This study introduces a fiber-optic sensor functionalized with a sensing probe for SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection. The sensor employs a microsphere design at the sensor's tip, enhanced with a gold layer and oligonucleotide probes, to achieve high sensitivity and specificity. Utilizing optical interference, the system enables near real-time monitoring of viral RNA at concentrations as low as 10-12 M. While the sensor's sensitivity is lower than that of the RT-PCR, it excels in speed, portability, and scalability, making it suitable for point-of-care diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and large-sc
