[Complex visual hallucinations following occipital infarct and perception of optical illusions].

INTRODUCTION: The physiopathology of visual hallucinations in the hemianopic field secondary to occipital infarct is uncertain. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a patient with a history of occipital infarct who presented nonstereotyped complex hallucinations in the quadranopic field resulting from a second controlateral occipital infarct. Based on an experience with motion optical illusions, we suggested that the association of these two occipital lesions, involving the V5 motion area on the one side and the V1 area on the other side, could have produced the complex hallucinations due to a

[Thoracic pseudo-lesions induced by inadequate methodology, optical illusions, and anatomical variations].

False-positive or over-calling of findings at chest radiography may have important consequences by generating numerous and unnecessary examinations. The advances made in thoracic imaging have currently decreased the number of technical errors. However, we are frequently confronted with visual illusions or with failure to recognize anatomical variants, either congenital, age-related or physiological in nature. Other difficulties are due to functional variations. Over-calling depends on the clinical context, which may inadequately suggest an interstitial lung process, abnormalities of the vascul

The Pulfrich stereo-illusion as an index of optic nerve dysfunction.

A simple test based on the Pulfrich phenomenon may provide an indication of optic nerve dysfunction. When a small object swinging pendulum fashion is viewed binocularly by a person with one eye covered by a neutral density filter, the object appears to swing in an elliptical path. The patient with optic nerve dysfunction may see it this way without use of a filter. The Pulfrich theory is explained, clinical applications are discussed, and instructions for constructing a Pulfrich apparatus are given.

Optical illusions: The vital importance of instructions for use and intentionally approaching eye device processing.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this process and quality improvement activity was to address opportunities identified with cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization requirements for eye devices, and implement a robust and sustainable processing system to support safe patient care. METHODS: Through the lean 6 Sigma methodology, the evaluation of noncritical, semicritical and critical device processing was conducted. A hierarchal approach to law, regulation, manufacturer's instructions for use, evidence-based guidelines, consensus documents, facility risk assessments, policy, and procedure was condu

Taking aim at the Müller-Lyer goalkeeper illusion: an illusion bias in action that originates from the target not being optically specified.

Van der Kamp and Masters (2008) reported that goalkeeper postures that mimic the Müller-Lyer (1889) illusion affect the location of handball penalty throws. In four experiments, we aimed to verify that the effects on throwing are consistent with an illusory bias (Experiments 1 and 2), and to examine how these observations can be understood in the context of Milner and Goodale's (1995, 2008) two-visual systems model (Experiments 3 and 4). Experiments 1 and 2 confirmed that the goalkeeper Müller-Lyer posture may indeed induce an illusory bias in throwing, implying that allocentric information is

Self-motion illusions from distorted optic flow in multifocal glasses.

Progressive addition lenses (PALs) are ophthalmic lenses to correct presbyopia by providing improvements of near and far vision in different areas of the lens, but distorting the periphery of the wearer's field of view. Distortion-related difficulties reported by PAL wearers include unnatural self-motion perception. Visual self-motion perception is guided by optic flow, the pattern of retinal motion produced by self-motion. We tested the influence of PAL distortions on optic flow-based heading estimation using a model of heading perception and a virtual reality-based psychophysical experiment.

Individual alpha frequency tACS modifies the detection of space-time optical illusion.

Postdiction is a perceptual phenomenon where the perception of an earlier stimulus is influenced by a later one. This effect is commonly studied using the 'rabbit illusion', in which temporally regular, but spatially irregular, stimuli are perceived as equidistant. While previous research has focused on short inter-stimulus intervals (100-200 ms), the role of longer intervals, which may engage late attentional processes, remains unexplored. This study investigates whether postdiction is purely perceptual or also involves attentional mechanisms by using visual stimuli separated by extended inte

Beware of Optical Illusion of the Alar Base in Unilateral Cleft Lip Nasal Deformity.

BACKGROUND: It is generally accepted that the alar base on the cleft side in the cleft lip nose is displaced outward and downward; therefore, it is rotated inward and upward in almost all procedures for cleft lip closure. However, nostril narrowing and collapse of the lower lateral cartilage on the cleft side are sometimes experienced. In this retrospective study, we investigated whether the preoperative alar base on the cleft side is displaced outward and downward. METHODS: This was a retrospective evaluation using preoperative frontal images obtained from patients with unilateral cleft lip

The effect of optical illusions on the vestibular system in individuals with motion sickness: An analysis of sensory reweighting.

Exposure to optical illusions during postural control activates the sensory reweighting system. However, the impact of optical illusions on the vestibular system in individuals with motion sickness (MS) remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the effects of optical illusions on the vestibular system in individuals with MS. The study included 33 individuals with MS (MS group) and 34 individuals without MS (control group). The severity of MS was assessed using the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire. All participants underwent cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEM

Beware the Alar Base Optical Illusion in Assessment of Unilateral Cleft Lip Nasal Deformity.

BACKGROUND: After repair of unilateral cleft lip, lateral drift of the alar base is expected and may require revision. Although the alar base appears wider than on the noncleft side, by measurement it could be symmetric or narrow. Is this an optical illusion? METHODS: This is a retrospective photographic evaluation of children who underwent repair of unilateral complete cleft lip and palate. On submental standardized photographs, raters judged whether the alar base position was wider, equal to, or narrower than on the noncleft side. The true alar base position was measured by photogrammetry a

A Common Prescription Lens Correction Causes Motion Illusions in the Presbyopic and General Populations.

PURPOSE: Monovision is a common correction for presbyopia that focuses one eye at far distances and the other at near distances, resulting in a difference in blur between the eyes. Because blur increases the speed of visual processing by a few milliseconds, these optical conditions can induce dramatic misperceptions of the distances and three-dimensional directions of moving objects. To date, the illusion has been demonstrated only in individuals without presbyopia. METHODS: We analyze both the induced processing speed differences and the visibility of the resulting illusions in presbyopic (n

A new random-dot stereo illusion and its application to the Anstis-Howard-Rogers effect.

When the dynamic visual noise of an untuned television set is viewed with image defocusing (positive lenses) and with a narrow vertical obstruction partially blocking the pupil of one eye, the video 'snow' seems to separate into two stable surfaces at different depths, divided by a vertical discontinuity. The main features of this illusion can be quantitatively accounted for in terms of the optics of defocused images and the retinal disparities predicted from blur circles. A residual component of the illusion, however, which was perceived by a majority of subjects, cannot be readily explained
