Measurements were made of total proteins, albumin, and colloid osmotic pressure on cord blood samples from 15 infants with erythroblastosis fetalis (six of whom were hydropic) and from 151 non-rhesus non-hydropic control infants. The erythroblastotic infants had levels of total protein and albumin which fell within the normal range for gestational age, but their colloid osmotic pressures were abnormally low. It seems that low colloid osmotic pressure may provide a reasonable explanation for the occurrence of hydrops fetalis.

Colloid osmotic pressure (COP) of some of the most frequently used plasma replacement fluids was measured with a colloid osmometer. COP of 4% human albumin solutions was only half that of normal human serum (13.6 +/- 0.6 vs. 27.5 +/- 2.7 mmHg (1.8 +/- 0.1 vs. 3.7 +/- 0.4 kPa)) (mean +/- s.d.), whereas COP of 20% human albumin solutions was eight times higher (196.0 +/- 12.3 mmHg (26.1 +/- 1.6 kPa)). To determine whether there is a change in the sensitivity of the osmotic control of vasopressin release in deoxycorticosterone (DOC)-salt hypertension, experiments were performed in unilaterally nephrectomized rats that were either normotensive or were made hypertensive with DOC and given 1% saline to drink. After 3 weeks of treatment, 2.5 mol/l NaCl was infused i.v. into conscious normotensive and hypertensive rats. A prospective, fluid-controlled study of serially measured colloid osmotic pressure changes in the peripartum period was undertaken. Seventeen patients with uncomplicated pregnancies undergoing elective cesarean section at term were administered a predelivery bolus of 15 ml/kg of lactated Ringer's solution prior to operation.
