Renal pathology of catheterized baboons (Papio cynocephalus).

Renal disease was found at necropsy in 27 of 60 catheterized baboons (Papio cynocephalus). Primary diagnoses were infarcts in eight baboons, septic embolic nephritis in four, and mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis in 15. Infarcts and septic embolic nephritis are multifocal renal diseases; mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis is diffuse, progressive and often accompanied by severe proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia (less than 3 g/dl), and generalized edema. Five of the 15 baboons with glomerulonephritis also developed uremia and died of renal failure. Ten baboons with glomerulonephritis wer…

Poxvirus infection of the baboon (Papio cynocephalus).

Ten serial passages of monkeypox (MPV), vaccinia, variola, and chimpanzeepox (chimp-9) viruses were performed in baboons (Papio cynocephalus) via skin scarification. Comparisons of clinical and virological results indicate that MPV and vaccinia are very closely related and that variola and chimp-9 viruses are identical. These findings suggest that infections of simians with chimp-9 virus resulted from contact with variola virus, the source of which is still unknown. On the other hand, MPV in monkeys may have resulted from contact with recently vaccinated humans, serial passage through simian h…

Infection of baboons ("Papio cynocephalus") with rotavirus (SA11).

A recent survey of nonhuman primate sera indicated that antibody to a rotavirus (SA11) was prevalent among a wide spectrum of animals. Both … man diarrhea, a preliminary investigation attempting to ascertain the susceptibility of the baboon (Papio cynocephalus) to a rotavirus was undertaken. Inoculation of four newborn baboons with SA11 resulted in diarrhea within 24 to 48 hours in all animals. One animal died 10 days postinoculation following severe diarrhea and dehydration. Virus was isolated as well as …

Sparganosis in wild-caught baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis).

BACKGROUND: Sparganosis is the infection of a paratenic host with the plerocercoid metacestode of Spirometra spp. A 12-year-old captive, pregnant, wild-caught baboon from Tanzania had multiple subcutaneous nodules. METHODS: Examination of the biopsied nodules revealed the presence of viable metacestodes. The histological morphology of the metacestodes was consistent with the genus Spirometra and other pseudophyllidean cestodes. Since species of Spirometra produce growth hormones that are active in mammals, we measured fetal and placental growth and hormone levels. Blood samples were taken fro

Age estimation in baboons (Papio cynocephalus) using dental characteristics.

Criteria for estimating the age of baboons using dental characteristics have been developed and tested. These criteria used eruption, wear, and color of the premolars and molars to characterize the ages of baboons in the range of 4--11 years of age. Ages greater than 11 were grouped into a single category. Using the criteria, three judges estimated independently the ages of 49 baboons, of known and unknown ages and of both sexes, with good agreement and precision. The rank order of the estimated ages was similar to the rank order of true ages for colony born animals.

Timing of the luteal-placental shift in the baboon (Papio cynocephalus).

Normally cycling female baboons (Papio cynocephalus) were mated with males of proven fertility during the periovulatory period. After pregnancy was confirmed, the corpus luteum-bearing ovary was removed (CL-OVX) at day 18 (n = 1), day 20 (n = 4), day 25 (n = 3), or day 30 (n = 4) of gestation. Upon CL-OVX at day 18 or 20, there was an immediate decline in plasma progesterone to basal levels, and pregnancy was not maintained. After CL-OVX on days 25 or 30, there was a transient, small decline in plasma progesterone levels which recovered rapidly to levels found in pregnant controls, and pregnan…

Estrogen receptor in the larynx of the aged baboon (Papio cynocephalus).

Using autoradiographic techniques, tritiated estrogen-receptor complex intranuclear labeling was identified in certain laryngeal tissues of four aged female baboons; no complex labeling was found in the control animal. Three significant findings were felt to be derived from this study. One, surface epithelium of the larynx had essentially no estrogen-receptor activity. Two, all tissues of mesenchymal origin, especially lamina propria, muscle, dense connective tissue, and fat had consistently high levels of nuclear localization of the labeled estrogen. The binding affinity seemed to be the high

A review of 105 necropsies in captive baboons (Papio cynocephalus).

In contrast to the findings in newly caught babboons in Africa, the leading cause of death in captivity in America was a pneumonia and enteritis complex. Bacterial species such as Proteus morgani, Proteus mirabilis, Clostridium sp., Pseudomonas paracolon, pathogenic Escherichia coli and cocci have been isolated in association with a pneumoenteric syndrome of 35 newborn baboons, including neonates. The majority of these animals died with pulmonary factors such as anoxia and pneumonia.

Craniofacial growth in olive baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis): browridge formation.

The examination of a developmental series of skulls of olive baboons has led to the generation of a model for browridge formation. Evidence in support of the model comes from surface configuration of browridge bone as studied by scanning electron microscopy, histology of the bone by the analysis of thin sections and by measurements that reflect both depositional cycles in browridge bone and the biomechanics of mastication. The model relates sudden changes in the biomechanical system caused by the tooth eruption cycle to cyclical changes in the formation of browridge bone. We suggest that browr

Immune complex glomerulonephritis in baboons (Papio cynocephalus) with indwelling intravascular catheters.

Baboons with long term, indwelling, intravascular catheters developed clinical signs of renal and hepatic impairment. These included proteinuria and hypoalbuminemia without edema, and albumin to globulin ratios were reversed. Serum IgM, IgG, rheumatoid factor, and liver enzyme concentrations were above normal. Immunofluorescent staining of renal glomerular capillary loops was positive for IgG, IgM, B1c, and C4. Major microscopic lesions were membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, chronic active hepatitis, degenerative arthritis, and chronic sialoadenitis. Electron microscopy of renal glomer

Fetal infection of the baboon (Papio cynocephalus) with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus.

Recent observations of LCM-induced fetal damage in humans suggested attempts to develop an animal model for studies on viral congenital malformations. We report herein viral studies on three pregnant baboons (Papio cynocephalus) inoculated subcutaneously with LCM virus strain WE3. The first animal, inoculated in the 9th week of pregnancy, aborted 9 days after a high virus dose. Inoculation of the second baboon during a later stage (23rd week) of pregnancy with a moderate virus dose, resulted in the demonstration of virus in the placenta, amniotic fluid, and cord blood. The infant showed only a…

Localized nocardiosis due to Nocardia caviae in a baboon (Papio cynocephalus).

Nocardia caviae was identified as the causative agent of draining, multinodular swelling of the hand of a 16-yr-old female baboon (Papio cynocephalus). The baboon's general physical condition was poor and menstrual cycles had ceased. The baboon improved after systemic and topical antibiotic therapy, but the lesion recurred after antibiotic treatment was discontinued. Since excision of the mass, the baboon's physical condition has improved to the extent that regular menstrual cycles have resumed and she has been returned to the assigned investigative program. Radiographs of the lungs, hand, and…

High intraabdominal pressure: effects on clinical parameters and lung pathology in baboons (Papio cynocephalus and Papio anubis).

OBJECTIVE: The risks of a high intraabdominal pressure during laparoscopy are poorly documented. These aspects were studied in a relevant nonhuman primate model, the baboon (Papio anubis, Papio cynocephalus). STUDY DESIGN: The animals used were to be killed at the completion of a vaccine project. They were anesthetized and intubated but allowed to breathe spontaneously. In group 1 (n = 10) a fixed intraabdominal pressure (between 10 and 35 cm H2O [7 and 26 mm Hg]) was applied over 30 minutes. In group 2 (n = 7) the intraabdominal pressure was increased up to a maximum of 105 cm H2O (77 mm Hg)…

Tuberculosis in wild olive baboons, Papio cynocephalus anubis (Lesson), in Kenya.

Several wild olive baboons from a single troop in the Masai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya were observed to be lethargic and emaciated. Five were trapped and tuberculin tested by intradermal inoculation of 0.1 cc (100 IU) mammalian old tuberculin in the upper eyelid. Two of the five showed positive reaction at 72 hr and were examined at necropsy. Gross lesions in both animals consisted of multiple nodules with caseation in the lung, spleen and tracheobronchial lymph nodes. There were multiple granulomas throughout the lung, spleen and the lymph nodes. Tissues were cultured on Lowenstein-Jensen media
