Parenting children with down syndrome: An analysis of parenting styles, parenting dimensions, and parental stress.

BACKGROUND: Effective parenting is vital for a child's development. Although much work has been conducted on parenting typically developing children, little work has examined parenting children with Down syndrome. AIMS: The purpose of the current study was to compare the parenting styles and dimensions in mothers of children with DS and mothers of TD children. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Thirty-five mothers of children with DS and 47 mothers of TD children completed questionnaires about parenting, parental stress, child behavior problems, and child executive function. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS: We f

Changes in parenting representations following Circle of Security-Parenting (COS-P) at an Australian Early Parenting Center.

The Circle of Security-Parenting program (COS-P) is a widely disseminated attachment and mentalization-informed parenting intervention. Outcome studies, however, have yielded mixed results and its effectiveness for parents from different demographic groups is largely unknown. This study examined the outcomes of COS-P and explored parent demographics (mother/father status and education). Participants were 117 parents who attended COS-P at an Australian Early Parenting Center. The Composite Caregiving Questionnaire (CCQ) assessed caregiving representations (self-efficacy regarding emotion/affect

Post-Divorce Parenting and Co-Parenting in Times of Crisis.

This study examines how divorced single parents make sense of their parenting and co-parenting experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic and the February 6, 2023, Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes in Türkiye. Using an interpretative phenomenological analysis design, the study draws on two-stage, semi-structured online interviews with 23 divorced parents who had been officially divorced for 1-5 years, lived with at least one child under the age of 18, and had experienced the crisis conditions addressed in the study, including direct exposure to the February 6, 2023, earthquakes. The analysis ge

Parenting from a County Jail: Parenting from Beyond the Bars.

The incarceration of mothers affects 1.7 million minor children who are at high risk of behavioral problems, emotional trauma, and future incarceration. The jail setting removes women from society for brief periods of time providing an opportunity to offer essential interventions for those who will be returning to the community, and possibly their children, rather quickly. Utilizing a pre- and post-test quasi-experimental design, we measured the self-reported treatment effects for female inmates, housed in a county jail in the New York metropolitan area, who completed an evidence-based parenti

Impact of parenting resources on breastfeeding, parenting confidence and relationships.

OBJECTIVE: Pregnancy and the postnatal period offers an opportunity to optimise maternal health. A UK-based charity has developed parenting resources - Baby Buddy smartphone app, Baby Express magazine, and 'From Bump to Breastfeeding' DVD - designed to complement health service care to promote maternal wellbeing, breastfeeding and positive parenting. We evaluated the embedding of these resources into maternity and early years care pathways at three sites in the north of England. Here we present results relating to the impact of the resources on breastfeeding, women's parenting confidence, and

Parenting a child with cancer: promotion and prevention-focused parenting.

Applying regulatory focus theory (RFT), it was predicted that, among survivors of childhood cancer, quality of life (QoL) may be compromised by prevention-focused parenting (the focus on avoiding negative outcomes), rather than promotion-focused parenting (the focus on approaching positive outcomes). Interviews with mothers of survivors of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) and tumours of the Central Nervous System (CNS) were coded for reports of parenting and related to child QoL. Parents reported overall more promotion than prevention; however, mothers of children with tumours of the CNS re

Hope and parenting.

Parenting provides daily opportunities for growth. Hopeful thinking provides many of the skills that parents need to successfully navigate parenting challenges. Hopeful parents think intentionally about parenting goals, create pathways to reach these goals, and find ways to stay motivated to use the pathways when challenges arise. Research suggests that high hope parents report better psychological adjustment to parenthood than low hope parents. They also engage in more active coping with parenting stressors and show high levels of emotional connection to their children. To date, research on h

Parenting in emerging adulthood: an examination of parenting clusters and correlates.

The changing nature of the transition to adulthood in western societies, such as the United States, may be extending the length of time parents are engaged in "parenting" activities. However, little is known about different approaches parents take in their interactions with their emerging-adult children. Hence, this study attempted to identify different clusters of parents based on the extent to which they exhibited both extremes of control (psychological control, punishment, verbal hostility, indulgence) and responsiveness (knowledge, warmth, induction, autonomy granting), and to examine how

Parenting Children with ADHD.

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders in children, affecting 4-12 percent of school-aged children, and can profoundly affect their academic achievement, well-being, and social interactions. While it is easy to think of a diagnosis of ADHD as a concern primarily for the children affected, it is important to recognize that chronic developmental and behavioral conditions affect all family members. METHODS: This study utilized the ADHD Common Sense Parenting (CSP) program developed by Boys Town for the specific population

Differences in health behaviors and parenting knowledge between pregnant adolescents and parenting adolescents.

To better understand the differences between pregnant adolescents and parenting adolescents, we examined substance use, contraceptive behavior, and parenting knowledge among 91 first-time pregnant and parenting adolescents enrolled in an adolescent parenting case management program. After one year of program participation, pre- and post-test comparisons indicated improvements in contraception use and parenting knowledge, and increases in reported use of cigarettes, alcohol and other drugs among both groups. Adolescents who entered the program while pregnant experienced greater benefit than ado

Trajectories of fathers' psychological distress across the early parenting period: Implications for parenting.

Fathers' parenting behavior is a likely key mechanism underlying the consistent associations between paternal mental health difficulties and poor emotional-behavioral outcomes for children. This study investigates the association between fathers' mental health trajectories and key parenting behaviors (warmth, hostility, consistency) spanning the first 8-9 years postpartum. Secondary analyses of 5 waves of data from 2,662 fathers participating in the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children were conducted. Latent growth class analysis was used to identify distinct trajectories of fathers' dist

Development of the General Parenting Observational Scale to assess parenting during family meals.

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest in the relationship between general parenting and childhood obesity. However, assessing general parenting via surveys can be difficult due to issues with self-report and differences in the underlying constructs being measured. As a result, different aspects of parenting have been associated with obesity risk. We developed a more objective tool to assess general parenting by using observational methods during a mealtime interaction. METHODS: The General Parenting Observational Scale (GPOS) was based on prior work of Baumrind, Maccoby and Martin, Barber, an

Parenting outcomes of parenting interventions in integrated substance-use treatment programs: A systematic review.

The high prevalence of women in substance use treatment programs with children, and the co-occurring negative physical and mental health outcomes associated with substance use, led to the development of integrated substance use treatment programs that target a range of women-specific issues. Integrated programs typically offer some type of parenting component, although the level of parenting services varies widely. Existing reviews have found positive child and parent outcomes following integrated treatment programs in general, although studies were not selected on the basis of whether they in

Parenting Children with Down Syndrome.

This symposium includes twelve personal narratives from parents of children with Down syndrome. These narratives foster better understanding of these parents' experiences of learning that their child has Down syndrome, navigating sometimes labrynthine medical, educational, and social services bureaucracy, and contending with an implicitly-and sometimes explicitly-ableist culture. Four commentaries on these narratives are also included, authored by experts and scholars in bioethics, disability studies, health and science communication, and public advocacy. The goal of this symposium is to call

Parenting Intentions Among Transgender Individuals.

PURPOSE: We know very little about how transgender people create their families and the issues involved in these decisions. This qualitative study explored the parenting intentions and desires of 32 self-identified transgender individuals who want to become parents in the future. METHODS: Data were collected using an open-ended survey with 32 transgender men and transgender women regarding when and how they want to become parents in the future. RESULTS: We found that transgender individuals expressed specific desires for parenthood, such as biological relatedness and barriers to parenthood,

Parenting interventions for incarcerated mothers.

UNLABELLED: As women constitute the fastest-growing prison population, understanding the effects of incarceration is essential. This poses a significant interest in a subset of women who are also mothers. The mental health challenges faced by incarcerated women are profound and unique compared to those of their male counterparts. Likewise, the mental health challenges of mothers may be viewed as separate and distinct. Thus, these factors may impact the relationships between women and their families. This systematic review was conducted using the PRISMA framework. It examines parenting interven

Reading Processes and Parenting Styles.

Home literacy environment explains between 12 and 18.5 % of the variance of children's language skills. Although most authors agree that children whose parents encourage them to read tend to develop better and earlier reading skills, some authors consider that the impact of family environment in reading skills is overvalued. Probably, other variables of parent-child relationship, like parenting styles, might be relevant for this field. Nevertheless, no previous studies on the effect of parenting styles in literacy have been found. To analyze the role of parenting styles in the reading processe

Parenting and children's cardiovascular functioning.

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that more supportive/less negative parenting is associated with lower resting blood pressure and heart rates in children and to determine whether parent and/or child gender and developmental stage moderate the relations in question. DESIGN: Longitudinal data on 835 children/families who participated in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development were analysed. Children (one per family) were followed from age 1 month to 11 years. METHODS: Data were collected from children and their families via

The diminishing polyads of parenting: exploring cultural perspectives of 'good parenting' using grounded theory analysis.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates Italian parents' perceptions of 'good parenting' and cultural variations. 250 mothers and 87 fathers were surveyed during the third trimester, with follow-ups at 6-12 weeks and 6 months postpartum. METHODS: Using Grounded Theory Analysis, data underwent iterative coding, forming lower and higher order codes, super-categories, and themes. RESULTS: The resulting theory, 'The diminishing polyads of parenting,' identifies four themes for mothers and three for fathers. Mothers prioritize emotional presence, self-sacrifice, and role balance, while fathers focu
