Polysomnographic pattern recognition for automated classification of sleep-waking states in infants.

A robust, automated pattern recognition system for polysomnography data targeted to the sleep-waking state and stage identification is presented. Five patterns were searched for: slow-delta and theta wave predominance in the background electro-encephalogram (EEG) activity; presence of sleep spindles in the EEG; presence of rapid eye movements in an electro-oculogram; and presence of muscle tone in an electromyogram. The performance of the automated system was measured indirectly by evaluating sleep staging, based on the experts' accepted methodology, to relate the detected patterns in infants

Glaucoma detection and evaluation through pattern recognition in standard automated perimetry data.

BACKGROUND: Perimetry remains one of the main diagnostic tools in glaucoma, and it is usually used in conjunction with evaluation of the optic nerve. This study assesses the capability of automatic pattern recognition methods, and in particular the support vector machines (SVM), to provide a valid clinical diagnosis classification of glaucoma based solely upon perimetry data. METHODS: Over 2,200 patient records were reviewed to produce an annotated database of 2,017 eyes. Visual field (VF) data were obtained with HFA II perimeter using the 24-2 algorithm. Ancillary information included treate

Neural network pattern recognition of lingual-palatal pressure for automated detection of swallow.

We describe a novel device and method for real-time measurement of lingual-palatal pressure and automatic identification of the oral transfer phase of deglutition. Clinical measurement of the oral transport phase of swallowing is a complicated process requiring either placement of obstructive sensors or sitting within a fluoroscope or articulograph for recording. Existing detection algorithms distinguish oral events with EMG, sound, and pressure signals from the head and neck, but are imprecise and frequently result in false detection. We placed seven pressure sensors on a molded mouthpiece fi

Selective networks and recognition automata.

The results we have presented demonstrate that a network based on a selective principle can function in the absence of forced learning or an a priori program to give recognition, classification, generalization, and association. While Darwin II is not a model of any actual nervous system, it does set out to solve one of the same problems that evolution had to solve--the need to form categories in a bottom-up manner from information in the environment, without incorporating the assumptions of any particular observer. The key features of the model that make this possible are (1) Darwin II incorpo

SD2-ReID: A semantic-stylistic decoupled distillation framework for robust multi-modal object re-identification.

The core challenge of multi-modal object re-identification (ReID) lies in reconciling the style discrepancies across different modalities with the semantic consistency of identity. However, existing methods are difficult to effectively separate semantic features from modality-specific styles, resulting in semantic representations being contaminated by noise and affecting recognition performance. To address the above issues, we propose a multi-modal re-identification framework based on semantic-stylistic decoupled distillation, named SD2-ReID (Semantic-Stylistic Decoupled Distillation for ReID)

Controllable stroke-based sketch synthesis from a self-organized latent space.

Learning to synthesize free-hand sketches controllably according to specified categories and sketching styles is a challenging task, due to the lack of training data with category labels and style labels. One choice to control the synthesis is by self-organizing a latent coding space to preserve the similarity of structural patterns of the observed data. A practical way is introducing a Gaussian mixture prior over the latent codes, where each Gaussian component represents a specific categorical or stylistic pattern. As a result, we can generate sketches by sampling the latent variables from th

From sparse semantics to rich instances: Empowering label-efficient LiDAR panoptic segmentation via geometric priors.

LiDAR point cloud panoptic segmentation is a rapidly developing task that unifies object detection, semantic segmentation, and instance segmentation. However, it requires both semantic and instance annotations, which are costly and labor-intensive to obtain. In this work, we propose a novel framework for LiDAR point cloud panoptic segmentation, which requires only a tiny proportion (e.g., 1% or fewer) of semantic labels and eliminates the need for any manual instance label. Specifically, we first adopt an active labeling strategy to annotate a small subset of the semantic labels. Then, we desi

Transformer-based word level Bangla sign language recognition using relative quantization encoding.

Sign language recognition (SLR) for low-resource languages like Bangla suffers from signer variability, viewpoint variations, and limited annotated datasets. In this paper, we present BdSLW401, a large-scale, multi-view, word-level Bangla Sign Language (BdSL) dataset with 401 signs and 102,176 video samples from 18 signers in front and lateral views. To improve transformer-based SLR, we introduce Relative Quantization Encoding (RQE), a structured embedding approach anchoring landmarks to physiological reference points and quantizes motion trajectories. RQE improves attention allocation by decr

24-GOPS 4.5- mm² digital cellular neural network for rapid visual attention in an object-recognition SoC.

This paper presents the Visual Attention Engine (VAE), which is a digital cellular neural network (CNN) that executes the VA algorithm to speed up object-recognition. The proposed time-multiplexed processing element (TMPE) CNN topology achieves high performance and small area by integrating 4800 (80 × 60) cells and 120 PEs. Pipelined operation of the PEs and single-cycle global shift capability of the cells result in a high PE utilization ratio of 93%. The cells are implemented by 6T static random access memory-based register files and dynamic shift registers to enable a small area of 4.5 mm(2

Efficient material selection for training occluded mmWave radar-based gesture recognisers.

Radar-based gesture recognition has emerged as a promising approach for unobtrusive interaction. Unlike camera-based systems, radar sensors can detect gestures through opaque materials, enabling seamless embedding into various everyday objects. However, it remains unclear how to train models efficiently for robust gesture recognition through diverse materials. To investigate this, we collected a dataset of 17,520 gesture recordings performed through 73 everyday materials. By comparing several material-sampling and data-augmentation strategies, we found that a small carefully selected represent

Embedded AI system for interactive vision screen based on human action recognition.

In recent years, vision screening has emerged globally for employment (on a yearly basis) within primary and high schools since myopia heavily affects school-aged children. However, this is a laborious and time-consuming task. This article proposes an intelligent system for "self-service" vision screening. Individuals can accomplish this task independently-without any assistance by technical staff. The technical solution involved within this platform is human action recognition realized by pose estimation (real-time human joint localization in images, including detection, association, and trac

Discriminative region learning for point cloud-based place recognition.

Point cloud-based place recognition aims to estimate a rough location by searching the database with a global descriptor aggregated from local features of the query point cloud. Recent advanced methods exploit the attention mechanism that establishes all pairs of relationships to enhance the local features with long-range contextual information. However, this operation may aggregate redundant and misleading information from time-varying objects and task-irrelevant areas (such as cars and ground points) into the local features, thereby impairing the discriminative power of the features. In this

A multidimensional feature fusion network based on MGSE and TAAC for video-based human action recognition.

With the maturity of intelligent technology such as human-computer interaction, human action recognition (HAR) technology has been widely used in virtual reality, video surveillance, and other fields. However, the current video-based HAR methods still cannot fully extract abstract action features, and there is still a lack of action collection and recognition for special personnel such as prisoners and elderly people living alone. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a multidimensional feature fusion network, called P-MTSC3D, a parallel network based on context modeling and tempora

MGCP-FER: Meta Control Genetic Programming (MCGP-FER) based feature extraction and fusion for facial expression recognition.

The high significance of the human-machine interaction system, facial expression recognition (FER) has become one of the most popular research fields in pattern recognition. The recognition of facial expressions is a challenging problem, because it is dependent on the quality of the facial depiction. Many different aspects have been added to detect facial expressions. But there is no universal set of features that can be useful to capture all the emotions. Therefore, there have been some researchers who are interested in combining several features to get more recognition. But this method is pr

A Prompt-Guided and Quality-Aware Robust Text-Audio Intent Recognition Framework for Elderly Care.

In natural language understanding, intent recognition plays a central role in human-computer interaction. However, in elderly-care scenarios, acoustic signals are often affected by atypical speech patterns, slower speaking rates, and environmental noise, making audio information less reliable and reducing the effectiveness of conventional text-audio fusion methods. To address this problem, we propose a prompt-guided and quality-aware text-audio intent recognition framework. Specifically, a χ2-based intent prototype soft prompt is introduced to enhance the semantic representation of text. Then,

Shadow-DETR: Alleviating matching conflicts through shadow queries.

Leveraging the end-to-end detection capability enabled by one-to-one matching, DETR has achieved state-of-the-art performance in simplified pipelines. However, the one-to-one matching mechanism also introduces certain limitations, such as slow convergence, which can be attributed to challenges like matching conflicts and limited supervision imposed by the matching process. This paper analyzes and identifies two forms of conflicts that arise from one-to-one matching: opposite optimization directions for similar samples and misalignment in query-object matching between different decoder layers.

Counting with ease: Class-agnostic counting via one-shot detection across diverse domains.

Class-agnostic counting is increasingly prevalent in industrial and agricultural applications. However, most deployable methods rely on density maps, which (1) struggle with background interference in complex scenes, and (2) fail to provide precise object locations, limiting downstream usability. The advancement of class-agnostic counting is hindered by suboptimal model designs and the lack of datasets with bounding box annotations. While some studies explore text-guided methods using multimodal models, they remain impractical for edge deployment and are beyond our study's scope. To address th

Application of the synergetic algorithm on the classification of lymph tissue cells.

A synergetic classification algorithm for lymphocyte discrimination is developed. By improving the ISODATA algorithm, it is possible to cluster the cell types in the training set with respect to the cluster center samples which plays a role as the cell prototype set types. Based on synergetic theory, a two-step synergetic competition mechanism was established: (1) the order parameter competition was introduced between the test cell sample and the prototypes of each prototype set, by setting the prototype of the maximum order parameter as the best prototype of each set; (2) similar matching com

The pattern evoked responses (VER) in optic neuritis.

Five patients presenting clinically accepted signs of optic neuritis served as subjects for a study on EP's (evoked potentials); the patients were tested during the acute phase, the chronic phase and at a stage when no impairment was clinically observed. At the acute phase of optic neuritis the VER was massively altered; in the chronic phase delayed latencies depending upon the impairment of visual acuity and visual fields could be recorded. At the recovery stage, while visual acuity and visual field showed no deficit, not only delayed latencies but also reduction in the amplitude at all stimu
