BACKGROUND: Age- and lifestyle-related changes in respiratory and physical function affect cough strength. However, in older adults, the main factors that relate to cough strength remain unclear. This study was a preliminary investigation of factors that contribute to cough strength and the relationships between cough strength and respiratory function, physical performance, physical activity, and sedentary behavior in community-dwelling older adults.
METHODS: By using accelerometers and other tools, we assessed cough peak flow (CPF), FVC, maximum inspiratory pressure (PImax), maximum expirato

Objective: To evaluate the effects of exergames added to a conventional physical therapy (CPT) program on functional fitness and dynamometric muscle performance for the sit-to-stand (STS) maneuver in older adults and to compare their results concerning a CPT-only intervention. Materials and Methods: Fifty independent older adults were randomly assigned to CPT and exergames (CPT+ExG group; n = 25; age = 71.8 ± 6.8 years) or CPT alone (CPT group; n = 25; age = 71.3 ± 7.4 years). CPT was performed twice a week (60 min/session) for 8 weeks. The CPT+ExG group added exergames for 30 minutes in each

The purpose was to evaluate the interrater reliability of the Dynamic Strength, Position Tolerance, and Mobility tasks of the Physical Work Performance Evaluation (PWPE), a Functional Capacity Evaluation often used with workers disabled due to back pain. For each worker's evaluation, two raters were preselected among five trained raters. One of the raters administered the PWPE while the other functioned as a silent rater. A convenience sample of 40 workers disabled due to back pain and referred to an occupational rehabilitation center was used. In general, the reliability was "substantial" (0.

PURPOSE: Consensus definitions currently define initial orthostatic hypotension (IOH) as ≥ 40 mmHg systolic (SBP) or ≥ 20 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure (DBP) reductions within 15 s of standing, while classical orthostatic hypotension (COH) is defined as a sustained reduction ≥ 20 mmHg SBP or ≥ 10 mmHg SBP within 3 min of standing. The clinical relevance of the aforementioned criteria remains unclear. The present study aimed to determine factors influencing postural blood pressure changes and their relationship with physical, functional and cognitive performance in older adults.
METHODS: In

BACKGROUND: Falls among older adults have become a global concern. While previous studies have established associations between autonomic function indicator; heart rate variability (HRV) and blood pressure variability (BPV) with fall recurrence, as well as physical inactivity and psychological disorders as risk factors for falls, the influence of physical activity and psychological status on autonomic dysfunction observed among older fallers has not been adequately investigated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between psychological disorder and physical performance on th

Instrumenting the six-minute walk test (6MWT) adds information about gait quality and insight into fall risk. Being physically active and preserving multi-directional stepping abilities are also important for fall risk reduction. This analysis investigated the relationship of gait quality during the 6MWT with physical functioning and physical activity. Twenty-one veterans (62.2 ± 6.4 years) completed the four square step test (FSST) multi-directional stepping assessment, a gait speed assessment, health questionnaires, and the accelerometer-instrumented 6MWT. An activity monitor worn at home ca

Background/Objectives: Determination of baseline predictors of longer-term quality of life (QOL) after autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (Auto-HSCT) may identify patients with the greatest supportive care needs. We hypothesized that baseline older age, weight loss, and worse functional performance would negatively predict QOL over two years post-HSCT. Methods: Physical function, body composition, and QOL were assessed before (PRE) and one month (1MO) after Auto-HSCT in U.S. Veterans (N = 23). QOL and survival were also assessed approximately every six months for two years afte

BACKGROUND: Parkinson disease (PD) may lead to functional limitations through both motor and nonmotor symptoms. Although patients with advanced disease have well-documented and profound functional limitations, less is known about the determinants of function in early to mid-stage disease where interventions may be more likely to benefit and preserve function.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of the current study was to identify motor, cognitive, and gait determinants of physical functional performance in patients with early to mid-stage PD.
DESIGN: This was a secondary analysis of cross-sectional ba

The metabolic demands of ambulation in a reciprocation gait orthosis (RGO) were compared with those in conventional bracing (hip-knee-ankle-foot orthosis) and wheelchair use in eight myelodysplastic children. Heart rate was significantly increased during swing-through gait compared with that during wheelchair use (p less than 0.01). Oxygen consumption studies showed a significant increase in swing-through gait over that in wheelchair use. These values for RGO use approximated wheelchair use. These results suggest a more favorable prognosis for long-term functional ambulation in higher-level my

Aging is a heterogeneous process characterized by marked variability in biological, cognitive, and functional trajectories among individuals of the same chronological age. Consequently, there is greater interest in biomarkers capable of identifying early deviations from healthy aging and predicting adverse outcomes. This review provides an updated overview of neuronal and behavioral biomarkers associated with aging and disease and discusses their integration with physical performance and functional outcomes in older adults. Neuronal biomarkers, including neuroimaging, blood-based, and neurovas
