Plant extracts as potential mosquito larvicides.

Mosquitoes act as a vector for most of the life threatening diseases like malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, chikungunya ferver, filariasis, encephalitis, West Nile Virus infection, etc. Under the Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM), emphasis was given on the application of alternative strategies in mosquito control. The continuous application of synthetic insecticides causes development of resistance in vector species, biological magnification of toxic substances through the food chain and adverse effects on environmental quality and non target organisms including human health. Application

Plant extracts as natural amoebicidal agents.

Strains of Acanthamoeba sp. constitute a factor contributing to the occurrence of chronic granulomatous amoebic encephalitis, keratitis, pneumonia, as well as inflammations of other organs. Treatment of these diseases is very difficult and not always effective. A majority of these infections have been fatal. The aim of our study was to examine the amoebicidal or amoebistatic activity of plant extracts from Rubus chamaemorus, Pueraria lobata, Solidago virgaurea and Solidago graminifolia. For the purpose of isolation of pharmacologically active substances, we used the aboveground parts of plants

Disaccharidase Inhibitory Activity of Thai Plant Extracts.

Background/Objectives: Intestinal α-glucosidases, including maltase, sucrase, and trehalase, are key enzymes responsible for the final steps of carbohydrate digestion. Although Thai medicinal plants possess diverse bioactivities, most previous studies on plant-derived α-glucosidase inhibitors have focused on single-enzyme assays, primarily maltase, and lack systematic comparison of the three major intestinal disaccharidases-maltase, sucrase, and trehalase. This study aimed to determine the kinetic properties of rat intestinal α-glucosidases and evaluate the inhibitory potential of selected Tha

[Bactericidal and immunocorrective properties of plant extracts].

Extract from oak cork, St. John's wort leaves and flowers and pine buds possess more pronounced bactericidal properties with respect to staphylococci, shigellae, Escherichia coli than decoctions from these medicinal plants. Such extracts may be included into complexes for the treatment of otorhinolaryngological diseases, enterocolitis in children and bacterial eczema. As a medicinal form, extract prepared from medicinal plants are more convenient for storage and permit more exact dosage.

Preparation of Membrane Extracts from Plant Tissues.

The reproducible isolation of subcellular membrane systems is crucial to investigate organelle-specific metabolic processes or protein targeting in plant cells. This chapter describes a modular protocol for the sequential enrichment of multiple membrane-bound compartments applicable to different eudicots, such as Medicago × varia and Solanum lycopersicum. Exemplified by Arabidopsis thaliana, sequential organelle-specific centrifugation and density gradient separation are utilized to obtain each compartment from a single homogenate of whole leaf tissue. This enables comparative biochemical or p

Plant Extracts in Acne Management: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disease associated with impaired pilosebaceous unit function, leading to the development of noninflammatory and inflammatory lesions and, in some cases, persistent post-inflammatory erythema, hyperpigmentation, and scarring. Acne pathophysiology is complex, involving altered sebum production and composition, abnormal keratinization, microbiome dysbiosis, and skin inflammation. Conventional therapies, such as topical retinoids, antibiotics, and benzoyl peroxide, are the first-line treatments for mild-to-moderate acne, but antibiotic resistance and

Plant Extracts as Alternative Additives for Sperm Preservation.

Sperm preservation is a crucial factor for the success of assisted reproductive technology (ART) in humans, livestock, and wildlife. Irrespective of the extender and the storage conditions used, semen handling and preservation negatively affect sperm quality. Moreover, oxidative stress, which often arises during semen storage, significantly reduces sperm function and compromises the sperm fertilizing ability by inducing oxidative damage to proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Plant extracts have recently emerged as a cheap and natural source of additives to preserve and enhance sperm function

Allergic contact dermatitis to plant extracts in cosmetics.

Topically applied cosmetics and medicaments containing botanical extracts are commonly used. Despite popular beliefs of their benignancy, some botanicals have been implicated in causing allergic contact dermatitis in susceptible patients. The offending allergen may be the botanical extract itself or another ingredient such as a fragrance, preservative, dye, or sunscreen found in the product. Specific botanicals implicated in causing cosmetic contact dermatitis include Compositae family plants, tea tree oil, peppermint, lavender, lichens, henna, and others.

Ultraviolet A protective potential of plant extracts and phytochemicals.

Chronic exposure to solar radiation is related to an increased incidence of various skin disorders, including premature skin aging and melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. Ultraviolet (UV) photons in particular are responsible for skin damage. Solar UV photons mainly belong to UVA wavebands, however UVA radiation has been mostly ignored for a long time. At the cellular level, UVA photons mainly provoke indirect oxidative damage to biomolecules via the massive generation of unstable and highly reactive compounds. Human skin has several effective mechanisms that forestall, repair and eliminat
