The Politicization of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Political actors and institutions are largely responsible for effectively implementing the latest scientific and medical information in the form of public health measures. However, when politicians' judgments and decision-making are not founded on scientific facts or when scientific findings are misrepresented to further political goals, global crises such as pandemics may be even more galvanized. Like other scientific topics that entered public debate before 2020 (e.g., the debate on climate change), the COVID-19 pandemic has been heavily politicized worldwide. Consequently, COVID-19-related

Voltaire and the politicization of medicine and science.

The 17th and 18th centuries witnessed an intellectual movement known as the Enlightenment that made possible future revolutions such as the scientific. No person better characterizes the Enlightenment than Voltaire (1696-1976) who, in his book Philosophical Letters published in 1734, venerated the liberalism of English institutions while criticizing the ancien régime of France. He was convinced that the personal freedom the English enjoyed was responsible for their country's success, pointing to inoculation for smallpox and advances in science as evidence. His choice of smallpox inoculation an

Politicizing CBT: Reflections on the boundaries between therapy and society.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is widely regarded as a neutral, evidence-based approach, yet its frameworks embed implicit assumptions about individual responsibility, rationality, and adaptation that carry professional and political implications. This paper examines how mainstream CBT often decontextualizes psychological suffering, emphasizing personal change while neglecting structural, economic, and political determinants of distress. Drawing on recent critiques, emerging research and contextualized interventions, I argue for politically sensitive CBT, integrating awareness of social de

Politicization of water, humanitarian response, and health in Syria as a contributor to the ongoing cholera outbreak.

In September 2022, the Syrian Ministry of Health declared a cholera outbreak after a surge of acute watery diarrhea cases. Since then, cases have been reported across Syria, particularly in the northwest. This ongoing outbreak reflects a pattern of politicizing water, humanitarian response, and health throughout the country's protracted conflict. Interference with water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure has been a key component of this politicization, impeding detection, prevention, case management, and control. Droughts and floods have exacerbated the WASH situation, as have the

On the politicization and polarization of psychology: What psychologists can learn from psychologists.

Social justice ideologies, with its emphasis on group or social identity, is permeating psychology. From its major role in the recently proposed code of ethics to its impact on therapy itself, the infusion of social justice ideologies into psychology threatens to change its very nature. This movement has a laudable goal: to combat the injustices that can impact individuals' mental health. But studies show that it also has negative impacts. This article lays out aspects of psychological research that are often ignored by psychologists, showing how the politicization of social identity and the e

Sick as a dog? The prevalence, politicization, and health policy consequences of canine vaccine hesitancy (CVH).

Canine vaccine hesitancy (CVH) can be thought about as dog owners' skepticism about the safety and efficacy of administering routine vaccinations to their dogs. CVH is problematic not only because it may inspire vaccine refusal - which may in turn facilitate infectious disease spread in both canine and human populations - but because it may contribute to veterinary care provider mental/physical health risks. In a nationally representative survey of US adults (N = 2200), we introduce a novel survey-based instrument for measuring CVH. We document pervasive CVH in dog owner subpopulations. Troubl

[The lower Neretva basin as a pathological topos: press reports and politicization of the memories of the age of cholera in 1886].

The lower Neretva basin as a space that has undergone historical transformation into a myth of a pathological topos has been analyzed. Starting from the fact that temporality is essential for understanding of the elements that partake in conceptualization of a myth, we have analyzed the state of this area as it was during its exposure to an epidemic of cholera in 1886. There is evidence that at this time exactly a step forward was made in comprehension of the etiology of the disease, which resulted in the change of centuries-long concepts of the Neretva basin as an unhealthy area. In this pape

"Erase/rewind": How transgender Twitter discourses challenge and (re)politicize lesbian identities.

Competing views on the in/compatibility of transgender status and lesbian identity is a source of conflict in the ongoing antagonism over transgender recognition. Many individuals with different transgender identities might lay claim to lesbian identity or lesbian discourse(s) more generally. However, this inclusion has been disputed in some circles insofar as it is seen to challenge or contradict characteristics of lesbianism. This paper explores how transgender discourses might challenge and (re)politicize lesbianism and lesbian identities. Given that social media platforms concentrate minor

The French public's attitudes to a future COVID-19 vaccine: The politicization of a public health issue.

As Covid-19 spreads across the world, governments turn a hopeful eye towards research and development of a vaccine against this new disease. But it is one thing to make a vaccine available, and it is quite another to convince the public to take the shot, as the precedent of the 2009 H1N1 influenza illustrated. In this paper, we present the results of four online surveys conducted in April 2020 in representative samples of the French population 18 years of age and over (N = 5018). These surveys were conducted during a period when the French population was on lockdown and the daily number of dea

Politicizing Social Inequality: Competing Narratives From the Alternative for Germany and Left-Wing Movement Stand Up.

This article investigates the link between rising levels of social inequality and years of austerity on the one hand and the rise of populist, anti-establishment protest on the other. This connection is explored by analyzing the discursive practices of activists as a way of reconstructing the key argumentative and emotional structures organizing actors' understanding of politics. Empirically the article is based on 40 narrative interviews with supporters of the German right-wing, anti-immigrant party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), and the newly established left-wing movement Stand Up. The fin

'Not men enough to rule!': politicization of ethnicities and forcible circumcision of Luo men during the postelection violence in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: As a contribution to ongoing research addressing sexual violence in war and conflict situations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Rwanda, this paper argues that the way sexual violence intersects with other markers of identity, including ethnicity and class, is not clearly articulated. Male circumcision has been popularized, as a public health strategy for prevention of HIV transmission, although evidence of its efficacy is disputable and insufficient attention has been given to the social and cultural implications of male circumcision. METHODS: This paper draws from

Majority friendship and support for social change: Examining the role of ethnic and politicized identifications among Indigenous people in Chile.

This study revisits an alleged 'sedative' effect of intergroup friendship on minority support for social change. Focusing on support for political action and empowering policies among Indigenous minorities in Chile, we examine both friendship with majority Chileans and personal discrimination; we distinguish ethnic and politicized minority identifications as hypothetical processes connecting intergroup contact with political outcomes; and we propose majority friends' perceived valuation of Indigenous minority friendships as a hypothetical buffer against sedation. Drawing on a large-scale strat

Adolescents' Long-Term Identity Tension After Politicized Cyber Shaming: Peer Support and Behavioural Visibility Management As Joint Conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Politicized cyber shaming recodes adolescents' cultural interests as evidence of political loyalty or moral belonging. This study examines how such shaming is associated with longer-term identity tension in adolescence, focusing on public expression, peer belonging, and self-evaluation after politicized online controversy. METHODS: Data were collected in China in 2023 using an event-anchored retrospective mixed-methods design. The study combines front-end data from Baidu Tieba, a Chinese topic-based online forum, during the 2012 Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands dispute and the 2016 Termin

Reimagining public understanding: Toward an institutional model.

Public understanding of science is often framed as either factual knowledge or generalized trust in experts. This article advances an alternative: an institutional model, grounded in cultural awareness of the norms, practices, and boundaries through which science produces credible knowledge. Existing approaches struggle to distinguish scientific controversy from broader social conflict, limiting their ability to explain why science's legitimacy falters in politicized contexts. An institutional perspective instead shifts the focus from individual deficits to science's role as a social system-em

Nuclear oncopolitics: Surveilling and decommissioning radioactive sources in Ethiopia.

This article examines the Office of Radiological Security (ORS), a U.S. non-proliferation initiative designed to secure high-risk radiological sources in medical, industrial, and research settings, and its implementation in Ethiopia. Drawing on multi-sited ethnographic research conducted between August 2022 and November 2025, I detail the suspicions and resistance the program provoked among Ethiopian actors. While the case adds new perspectives to literature interrogating nuclear politics and speaks to a growing body of literature on power and inequality in global cancer care, my overall aim i

A Bourdieusian Approach to the Demobilisation of Brazil's AIDS Movement.

This article offers a Bourdieusian analysis of the demobilization of Brazil's AIDS movement, once a globally celebrated force in shaping innovative, rights-based public health responses. Drawing on extensive qualitative data, I argue that the movement's decline cannot be explained solely by institutional co-optation, biomedicalisation, or defunding, as suggested in previous scholarship. Instead, I conceptualise demobilisation as a deeper process of depoliticisation that emerges from transformations in the distribution of capital, shifts in habitus, and structural changes in the field of power

The politics of 'the politics of display': a nuclear-energy gallery, a science museum in the 1980s and a debate about patronage.

This article examines a controversy over a nuclear-energy gallery at the Science Museum, London, in the early 1980s. It uses this case to explore the wider politicization of museums at this time, and thus the politicization of the display of science and technology. It argues that cultural changes in train since the 1960s, coupled with a museological turn towards 'social history' as the proper vehicle for exhibiting science and technology, led to the museum becoming newly subject to widespread critical scrutiny. That scrutiny had contradictory effects. On the one hand, it reinforced the image o

Endorsing narratives of white replacement: Elite discourse, public attention, and extremist mobilization.

This paper examines how endorsements of white replacement conspiracies by political leaders might redirect public attention and energize white supremacist activity in the United States. We trace the historical evolution of replacement narratives and examine their appeal to political actors, then discuss theoretical frameworks linking reports of hostile political speech, public attention, and extremist mobilization. We construct a novel dataset combining federal and state legislators' endorsements of replacement narratives that received media attention with Google search trends and indicators o

[Elements of misinformation in the public perception of the dengue vaccine in Brazil: an analysis of comments on social media].

In 2024, dengue in Brazil reached alarming epidemiological rates, being considered potentially the worst year in history. In this context, the arrival of vaccines against the disease represents a great advance for Brazil's public health. However, misinformation and fake news about vaccines pose a threat to the success of immunization campaigns. In this article, we aim to understand the elements of misinformation present in the public perception about the arrival of dengue vaccines in Brazil. To this end, 1,550 comments were collected on online posts from five major media outlets in the country
