Postoperative Complications.

Surgery under anesthesia poses a significant stress to the body, and postoperative complications occur in up to 20% of cases. An understanding of postoperative complications, including assessment of patients at risk, risk mitigation, early recognition, and evidence-based treatment, is essential to provide high-value health care. Common postoperative complications reviewed in this article include fever, cerebrovascular accident, nausea and vomiting, ileus, and urinary retention, including discussion of pathophysiology, prevention, and treatment.

Postoperative rectal anastomotic complications.

Colorectal cancer represents the most common tumour of the gastrointestinal tract and the second most common tumour in men as well as women. The trend of increasing incidence of colorectal cancer is alerting. We undertook a retrospective study on 588 patients with rectal cancer and operated by rectal resection with anastomosis between the years 2002-2012. In our sample, we observed 54 (9.2 %) cases of anastomosis insufficiencies requiring reoperation. Out of 54 insufficient anastomoses, 36 (66 %) were in the lower two thirds of the rectum and only 18 (34 %) in the oral one. Although we have ob

Hepatic transplantation: postoperative complications.

Advances in surgical techniques and immunosuppression have made orthotopic liver transplantation a first-line treatment for many patients with end-stage liver disease. The early detection and treatment of postoperative complications has contributed significantly to improved graft and patient survival with imaging playing a critical role in detection. Complications that can lead to graft failure or patient mortality include vascular abnormalities, biliary abnormalities, allograft rejection, and recurrent or post-transplant malignancy. Vascular abnormalities include stenosis and thrombosis of th…

[Smoking and postoperative complications].

INTRODUCTION: Smoking has a negative impact on the outcome of surgical procedures. Smoking leads to higher risk of postoperative complications and it delays wound healing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We observed pulmonary complications, wound healing complications, and the length of the postoperative hospitalization period of 877 patients admitted for elective surgery.. Patients were divided according to their smoking status in to 3 groups: the current smokers were 32% (279/877), the former smokers 31% (274/877) and the non-smokers 37% (324/877). RESULTS: Pulmonary complications occurred more fre…

Postoperative complications of capsulorhexis.

Capsulorhexis has become the preferred method of anterior capsulotomy, and untoward effects have not been frequently noted. Nevertheless, distinct complications of continuous tear anterior capsulotomy are now recognized. These include capsular bag hyperdistention, shrinkage of the anterior capsule opening with visual loss and/or intraocular lens decentration, and lens epithelial cell hyperproliferation on the posterior lens capsule. The latter has not been reported and may be associated wit reduction or closure of laser posterior capsulotomies in the form of a "string of pearls" around the cap

Common Postoperative Heart Transplant Complications.

Heart failure or congestive heart failure remains a major public health concern on the global scale. End-stage heart failure is a severe disease where the heart is unable to pump enough oxygen and nutrients to other tissues and organs of the body. When the lines of treatment of heart failure such as lifestyle adjustments, medical management, and device therapy fail, a patient may be deemed a candidate for heart transplantation. This article reviews the history of heart transplantation, complications post-heart transplantation, and nursing management considerations for the immediate period afte

Postoperative Complications of Scleral Buckling.

Scleral buckling has an important role in the repair of certain categories of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. These include detachments in young phakic patients, detachments associated with dialysis, and also in conjuction with vitrectomy in patients who have sustained trauma or have developed proliferative vitreoretinopathy. However, it can be associated with significant postoperative complications. The most important ones are refractive change, intrusion or extrusion, infection, globe ischemia, and choroidal detachments, amongst others. Careful planning, appropriate patient selection, an…

Postoperative complications of central neurocytoma.

Six patients with central neurocytoma were retrospectively examined, including diagnosis and treatment process as well as postoperative complications. Clinical follow-ups were performed through telephone calls or outpatient service. Of the 6 patients, a total of 5 patients had 1 or more postoperative complications. The postoperative complications included hydrocephalus, basal ganglia edema, epidural hematoma of the operated region and the remote region, and intracranial infection; 5 patients underwent the cortical fistulization approach and 1 underwent the longitudinal fissure-corpus callosum …

Managing physical postoperative stoma complications.

Stoma surgery often changes a person's lifestyle and body image permanently, and can negatively influence recovery. Literature consistently demonstrates the profound impact that stoma formation can have on a person, bringing about not only physical changes, but also affecting psychological recovery. For the person who encounters additional problems with their stoma post-surgery, their recovery and return to their normal life in the community may be hindered and never fully complete. The complications associated with a stoma may be categorized into two areas: physical and psychological. For peo

Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty: postoperative complications.

Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) has become a widely used procedure for the treatment of snoring and mild sleep apnea in the United States. Between July 1993 and December 1994, the authors of this study prospectively evaluated 541 consecutive patients referred to their hospital for possible LAUP to treat loud disruptive snoring. Of the 541 patients, 275 patients had a total of 754 LAUP procedures. There were 26 complications (3.45%). These complications included postoperative hemorrhage in 16 patients (2.12%), local infection in 4 patients (0.53%), temporary palatal incompetence in 4 pa

[Diagnostic procedure in postoperative complications].

17% of postoperative ICU patients develop postoperative complications. In 84% of cases, complications are related to surgery, in 16% they are not. The main postoperative surgical complications are abdominal sepsis (65%), postoperative bleeding (25%), and bowel obstruction (7%). Therefore, the primary objective of postoperative investigations must be to check the sites of operation. Bedside procedures are examination of drainage fluid, sonography, endoscopy, and X-ray (gastrografin swallow). The diagnostic value of these procedures is 80%. Other diagnostic procedures include CT, angiography, an…
