Propionibacterium acnes, a common skin organism, is most notably recognized for its role in acne vulgaris. It also causes postoperative and device-related infections and has been associated with a number of other conditions such as sarcoidosis and synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis and osteitis (SAPHO), although its precise role as a causative agent remains to be determined. Propionibacterium acnes produces a number of virulence factors and is well known for its inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. Recent publication of the P. acnes genome should provide further insights into t

INTRODUCTION: Propionibacterium acnes is a gram-positive pleomorphic rod-shaped anaerobic saprophyte of the skin, mouth and upper respiratory tract. Although associated with acne vulgaris, it is otherwise reported as a human pathogen only rarely, in various infections, notably cutaneous and osteoarticular, and in endocarditis. We report here a case of bilateral P. acnes-abscessed adenitis of the inguinal folds.
CASE: A 32 year-old man presented with inguinal lymph nodes that had progressively and bilaterally reddened and become painful, with fistulation of the skin and pus. Culture of a surgi

The involvement of microorganisms in the development of acne has a long and checkered history. Just over 100 years ago, Propionibacterium acnes (then known as Bacillus acnes) was isolated from acne lesions, and it was suggested that P. acnes was involved in the pathology of the disease. The 1960s saw the use of antibiotics to treat acne, and the consequent clinical success combined with reductions in P. acnes gave new impetus to the debate. Over the past two decades, the inevitable emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of P. acnes as a consequence of acne therapy not only has reopened the

Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) was isolated in high rates and in high concentrations from lymph nodes in patients with sarcoidosis. However, the precise mechanism of granuloma formation and immunomodulation by P. acnes has not been elucidated yet. In patients with sarcoidosis, it was found that the high levels of interleukin-2 released from alveolar lymphocytes as well as interleukin-1, tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-6 released from alveolar macrophages were stimulated by P. acnes. These cytokines (mainly IL-2), released by P. acnes in large quantities, play a major role in the comp

Cutibacterium acnes protects skin homeostasis. The species has three subspecies, and associations between C. acnes subsp. acnes and acne, C. acnes subsp. defendens and prostate cancer, and C. acnes subsp. elongatum and progressive macular hypomelanosis have recently been suggested. Different phylotypes/clonal complexes may cause prosthetic joint and other infections, and virulence factors such as fimbriae, biofilms, multidrug-resistance plasmids, porphyrin, Christie-Atkins-Munch-Petersen factors and cytotoxicity contribute to infections. Isolates are subtyped by multiplex PCR or multi- or sing

Acne vulgaris is one of the most common skin diseases and can affect a large number of individuals at some point in their lives. Though the disease is multi-factorial, the Gram-positive, anaerobic bacterium Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), a member of resident skin microflora, is implicated in acne inflammation and associated with acne lesions. Common treatments such as antibiotic or benzoyl peroxide nonspecifically reduce bacteria population on the skin, which may disrupt homeostasis and cause further complications such as promoting growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria strains. A compon

We established growth curves for Propionibacterium acnes isolates recovered from eyes with chronic postoperative endophthalmitis. The growth curve plotted the average of the duplicate bacterial concentration against time. The generation time for P. acnes calculated from the growth curves was approximately 5.1 hours. The growth of P. acnes is slower than other anaerobic bacteria. This may account for its delayed appearance in culture of ocular specimens. It may also explain treatment failure if the concentration of an antibiotic injected into the vitreous does not remain at an effective level d

The skin commensal Propionibacterium acnes, recently renamed Cutibacterium acnes, along with the other major pathophysiological factors of increased seborrhea, hyperkeratinization of the pilosebaceous unit, and inflammation, has long been implicated in the pathogenesis of acne. Recent advances have contributed to our understanding of the role of P. acnes in acne. Although there are no quantitative differences in P. acnes of the skin of patients with acne compared with controls, the P. acnes phylogenic groups display distinct genetic and phenotypic characteristics, P. acnes biofilms are more fr

Propionibacterium acnes is a Gram-positive bacterium that forms part of the normal flora of the skin, oral cavity, large intestine, the conjunctiva and the external ear canal. Although primarily recognized for its role in acne, P. acnes is an opportunistic pathogen, causing a range of postoperative and device-related infections. These include infections of the bones and joints, mouth, eye and brain. Device-related infections include those of joint prostheses, shunts and prosthetic heart valves. P. acnes may play a role in other conditions, including inflammation of the prostate leading to canc

INTRODUCTION: Propionibacterium acnes endocarditis is rare and difficult to diagnose. We report a case of Propioniacterium acnes endocarditis revealed by a lower limb fasciitis.
CASE REPORT: A 54-year-old patient presented with recurrent febrile myalgia of the lower limbs, that appeared three years after an aortic surgery (aortic valve sparing reimplentation and ascending aortic prosthesis implantation). Computer tomography showed fasciitis of both legs. Positron emission tomography showed 18Fluorodeoxyglucose intake of the aortic prosthesis and in muscles of the lower limbs. Ten days after b

Cutibacterium (formerly Propionibacterium) acnes13, 16 is a slow growing, gram-positive bacteria that is naturally found in higher concentrations as skin flora on the chest and back, as well as in other areas with greater numbers of hair follicles.25, 37 Most of the reported cases of C. acnes shoulder girdle infection follow arthroplasty surgery,18, 20, 26, 27, 32, 35 which then often requires debridement, administration of intravenous antibiotics, and surgical revision of the implanted device.12, 15, 21, 28-30 In a recent study, 56% of 193 shoulder revisions had a positive culture, 70% of whi

Antibiotic therapy directed against Propionibacterium acnes has been a mainstay of treatment for more than 40 years. Despite years of widespread use of systemic tetracyclines and erythromycin, change in P. acnes sensitivity to antibiotics was not seen until the early 1980s. The first clinically relevant changes in P. acnes antibiotic sensitivity were found in the USA shortly after the introduction of topical formulations of erythromycin and clindamycin. By the late 1980s, P. acnes strains with very high MIC levels for erythromycin and elevated MICs for tetracycline were increasingly found in t

Acne is still a major problem, and treatment options are far from ideal. A number of studies suggest that the species Propionibacterium acnes plays an important role in the pathogenesis, and new data point towards molecular mechanisms by which the organism is able to trigger the host inflammatory response. The current knowledge on P. acnes in relation to acne is reviewed.

The human commensal bacterium Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) resides in the pilosebaceous duct of the skin. It has been long implicated in the pathogenesis of acne, although its exact role in the development of inflammatory acne lesions and in the formation of the microcomedo in the early stages of acne remains controversial. The worldwide prevalence of antibiotic-resistant P. acnes is increasing, with rates varying in different parts of the world. The reason for the difference in the antibiotic resistance patterns of P. acnes among different countries is not clear, although it may be attr

An infected aortic endograft is an uncommon event, and when it happens it can be of significant morbidity and mortality to the patient. We present here a case of a patient with an infected aortic endograft following percutaneous translumbar sac embolization for a type II endoleak leading to sac expansion. The cultured pathogen was Propionibacterium acnes, a commonly occurring skin bacterium that leads to the clinical condition "acne vulgaris." The patient underwent graft explantation and reconstruction with autogenous femoral vein. To our knowledge, there are no previously published reports of

Propionibacterium acnes is the only microorganism isolated from sarcoid lesions by bacterial culture. Numerous P. acnes genomes are found in lymph node samples from Japanese and European patients with sarcoidosis, whereas a few genomes are found in some non-sarcoid samples. The high frequency and specificity of detecting P. acnes within sarcoid granulomas suggests that this indigenous bacterium causes granuloma formation in many patients with sarcoidosis. P. acnes is the most common commensal bacterium in the lungs and lymph nodes. Occasional detection of P. acnes in non-granulomatous areas of

Propionibacterium acnes is a Gram-positive bacterium that is intimately associated with humans. The nature and consequences of this symbiosis are poorly understood; it might comprise both mutualistic and parasitic properties. Recent advances in distinguishing phylotypes of P. acnes have revealed that certain type I lineages are predominantly associated with acne vulgaris. Genome analyses revealed a highly conserved core genome and the existence of island-like genomic regions and possible mobile genetic elements as part of the flexible gene pool. The analysis of clustered regularly interspaced
