Handing it to pterygium: Explaining pterygium laterality.

PURPOSE: To evaluate any correlation between pterygium laterality and patient handedness. METHODS: Our study represents a retrospective observational study of a series of consecutive pterygium patients recruited from two centres. Each patient was assessed for their handedness which was compared to the laterality of their presenting pterygium. Patients that possessed bilateral disease comparisons between pterygium size and handedness were made. Correlation statistics were performed to compare patient handedness and pterygium location (right or left). For patients possessing bilateral disease o…

Comparison of Biomarkers Playing a Role in Pterygium Development in Pterygium and Recurrent Pterygium Tissues.

Background/Objectives: Pterygium is a nonneoplastic elastotic degeneration characterized by subepithelial growth. It manifests as an ocular lesion originating from the bulbar conjunctiva, extending to the corneal surface, and reaching the visual axis in some cases. Although the exact cause is unknown, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation is considered the most significant contributing factor. Chronic irritation and actinic damage are likely responsible for the typical fibrovascular reactions observed in pterygium. Additionally, growth factors, cytokines, and matrix metalloproteinases pl…

The Effect of Pterygium and Pterygium Surgery on Corneal Biomechanics.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of pterygium and pterygium surgery on corneal biomechanics by ocular response analyzer (ORA, Reichert, USA). METHODS: This study considered 68 eyes (from 34 patients with a mean age of 21.2±7.1 years) with unilateral nasal, primary pterygium (horizontal length <4 mm), and having undergone pterygium excision and conjunctival autografting. Pterygium length and area were measured from a photograph of the anterior segment using Image J program. ORA measurements were obtained before surgery and after the first month of the surgery. The measurements of the eyes with …

Effect of pterygium excision on pterygium induced astigmatism.

Pterygium is known to affect refractive astigmatism, which can have a significant impact on vision. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of pterygium excision on refractive astigmatism. Thirty-six eyes with primary pterygium with astigmatism of 2D or more were analysed before and after pterygium excision. Astigmatism increased with the increase in the grade of pterygium (P = 0.000001). The preoperative refractive cylinder decreased from 4.60 +/- 2D to 2.20 +/- 2.04D (P = 0.00001) after pterygium excision.

Pterygium syndrome.

The pterygium syndrome consists of the neck, the antecubital fossae and the popliteal regions together with flexion deformities of the limb joints and anomalies of the vertebrae. A family, three offspring of which appear to be affected with the same disorder, is presented. All three are female; there is also a normal female child of the same union.
