Hypergammaglobulinaemic purpura presenting as reticulate purpura.

Hypergammaglobulinaemic purpura, first described by Waldenstrom, is a rare skin disease. The essential features are the presence of purpura with polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia. We describe a case of hypergammaglobulinaemic purpura occurring in a Chinese man with reticulate purpura and haemorrhagic blisters.

Polycythemia, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.

The responsibility of the intravenous nurse is increasing in the multidisciplinary management of patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, and polycythemia. A thorough understanding of these diseases and the treatment modalities is essential for quality patient care. Emphasis is placed on treatment considerations, including blood component administration, therapeutic phlebotomy, and pharmacologic agents.

[Sports purpura].

Recreational or regular physical and sport activities may be responsible for a wide range of cutaneous complications. Among them, "sports purpura" is a peculiar symptom that can occur during a large number of sports. "Effort purpura" defines any purpura occurring within the context of physical exercise irrespective of its cause. Therefore this clinical diagnosis includes various aetiologies. Diagnosis of traumatic purpura is often easy if the sport is mentioned in the anamnesis; cutaneous exercise - induced vasculitis must be also noted. Purpura can reveal systemic diseases or internal haemorr…

Duodenojejunitis: is it idiopathic or is it Henoch-Schönlein purpura without the purpura?

BACKGROUND: Henoch-Schönlein purpura is a small-vessel vasculitic disease that most often affects the skin. Gastrointestinal manifestations have been well described, including duodenojejunal inflammation (DJI). METHODS: Four children with DJI and clinical features of HSP are described, in whom the rash was either not present or appeared atypically late in the illness. RESULTS: The characteristic rash did not develop in three children, and it developed much later in one. The patients (three boys and one girl) were aged between 7 and 9 years (mean, 7.5 years). Growth characteristics were norma…

Psychogenic purpura.

Psychogenic purpura, also known as Gardner-Diamond syndrome, is a rare, distinctive, localized cutaneous reaction pattern mostly affecting psychologically disturbed adult women. Repeated crops of tender, ill-defined ecchymotic lesions on the extremities and external bleeding from other sites characterize the condition. We report here a case of psychogenic purpura because of the rarity of the condition and to emphasize the importance of consideration of this entity during evaluation of a patient with recurrent ecchymoses. Early diagnosis of this condition will not only minimize the cost of the …

Suction purpura.

BACKGROUND: Purpuric eruptions due to local mechanical causes are commonly seen, particularly in children. These eruptions are not always recognized as isolated purpura, and the patient may be submitted to an unnecessary extensive hematologic workup. We present various causes of suction purpura and outline a logical investigational approach. OBSERVATIONS: Suction purpura result from an external force exerting negative pressure on a circumscribed area of the skin, producing small grouped petechiae. We present a number of such suction purpura-causing mechanisms: Pressure during the delivery of …
