Emergency abdominal radiography.

Plain abdominal radiographs are rarely diagnostic when the patient presents with acute abdominal pain. Emergency physicians, therefore, should be aware of the appropriate indications and limitations of abdominal films in this setting and should be skilled in their interpretation to exclude the rare cases of pneumoperitoneum, pneumobilia, hepatic-portovenous gas, small and large bowel obstruction, toxic megacolon, volvulus and intramural gas.

Abdominal radiography is not necessary in children with intussusception.

BACKGROUND: Children with intussusception require rapid and accurate diagnosis to enable timely intervention for satisfactory outcome. Ultrasonography is the recommended standard diagnostic modality; however, abdominal radiography (AR) is still used as an initial investigation. The aim of this study was to investigate the benefit of AR in intussusception by determining diagnostic accuracy and analysing correlation of AR findings with outcome. METHODS: Index cases of intussusception presenting over 15 years (1998-2013) were analysed. Those who had AR performed were allocated into groups with p

Diabetes mellitus. I: Routine plain abdominal radiography.

The plain abdominal radiographs of 43 consecutive diabetic patients were studied. Disordered bowel motility which was unrelated to the severity of the diabetes mellitus occurred in 76.7% while artheriosclerosis occurred in 65%. Only 7% (3 patients) had pancreatic calcification; of these, one was a complication of urinary schistosomiasis (Schistosoma haematobium). All the patients with pancreatic calcification were above 45 years of age and had had diabetes mellitus for more than 7 years. This study shows that pancreatic calcification is uncommon among Nigerian diabetics, so plain abdominal rad

Plain abdominal radiography in acute abdominal pain; past, present, and future.

Several studies have demonstrated that a diagnosis based solely on a patient's medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests is not reliable enough, despite the fact that these aspects are essential parts of the workup of a patient presenting with acute abdominal pain. Traditionally, imaging workup starts with abdominal radiography. However, numerous studies have demonstrated low sensitivity and accuracy for plain abdominal radiography in the evaluation of acute abdominal pain as well as various specific diseases such as perforated viscus, bowel obstruction, ingested foreign body

Plain abdominal radiography in suspected intussusception: a reassessment.

The objectives of the study were (1) to determine the interobserver variation in interpretation of abdominal radiographs in children with clinically suspected intussusception, and (2) to determine the diagnostic value of abdominal radiographs in these patients. One hundred and eighty-two plain abdominal radiographic examinations (AXR) performed in children with clinically suspected intussusception were reviewed blind to the clinical history and findings of air enema. The presence or absence of nine AXR signs relevant to intussusception was documented. Each AXR was categorized as equivocal, pos

Rationalising abdominal radiography in the accident and emergency department.

A retrospective analysis is presented of 100 consecutive patients attending an accident department and referred for abdominal radiography. In general the reasons for requesting supine films appeared sound. Five per cent of referrals were for haematemesis which is not a valid reason for plain radiography. An erect abdominal film as a routine request is indicated only in suspected intestinal obstruction (4% in this series), but 83% of patients were referred for both erect and supine films. If haematemesis were excluded as a reason for X-ray referral, and if erect films were limited to suspected

Association of intestinal disorders in cats with findings of abdominal radiography.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the radiographic appearance of small and large intestines of cats with various medical conditions and create a quantitative index for interpretation of intestinal diameters on radiographic views of the abdomen. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. ANIMALS: 74 cats that underwent abdominal radiography. PROCEDURES: Cats were assigned to 1 of 4 diagnosis categories: no gastrointestinal tract disease (n = 20), nonobstructive gastrointestinal tract disease (32), linear foreign body (LFB; 11), and small intestinal mechanical obstruction not caused by an LFB (11). Abdominal ra

[Abdominal actinomycosis. Report of 4 clinical cases studied with radiography].

We report 4 cases of pathologically proven abdominal actinomycosis. US and CT demonstrated an infiltrative abdominal mass with ill-defined margins and heterogeneous enhancement after IV contrast. The ileo-cecal region was involved in one case; the mass appeared following cholecystectomy and recurred 3 years after surgical resection in one case; and no predisposing factor was identified in the 2 other cases. In one of these, recurrence was observed 12 years after the first episode. Actinomycosis must be included in the differential diagnosis of invasive abdominal lesions with "malignant" appear

Low-dose abdominal radiography based on high peak kilovoltage: image quality at standard dose abdominal radiography and potentially 64% dose reduction in a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Acute abdomen is a common clinical emergency requiring rapid and accurate diagnosis. Abdominal radiography (AR) remains a first-line imaging tool due to its accessibility and specificity for certain conditions, but minimizing radiation exposure is a persistent concern. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a low-dose abdominal radiography (LDAR) protocol for patients with acute abdomen. METHODS: A total of 354 patients (189 men, 165 women; mean age, 50 years) who underwent acute abdominal surgery after being admitted with an acute abdomen were randomly assigned to a LD

Efficacy of plain abdominal radiography in patients with biliary tract disease.

A retrospective review was performed to determine the usefulness of plain abdominal radiographs in patients presenting to the emergency department with gallbladder disease. Patients with the clinical diagnosis of biliary tract disease were divided into two groups: those with confirmed biliary tract disease and those who did not have gall bladder disease. There were no major radiologic findings (pneumoperitoneum, pneumobilia, or bowel obstruction) in any patient with biliary tract disease. No significant difference was noted in the incidence of minor radiologic findings (right upper quadrant ca

Lanthanum carbonate has a radiopaque appearance on the plain abdominal radiography.

An 84-year-old woman presented to her local emergency department for abdominal pain. Her medical history included hemodialysis in the treatment of chronic renal failure, Parkinson's disease, chronic atrial fibrillation, chronic constipation, appendicectomy and cholecystectomy. The patient complained of diffuse abdominal pain for 4 days, associated with nausea and vomiting in the last 24 hours. Physical examination revealed a soft and depressible abdomen, diffusely painful, without signs of peritoneal irritation. A digital rectal exam revealed large amount of stool in the rectal vault without p

Utility of two-view vs. three-view abdominal radiography in canines presenting with acute abdominal signs.

There are clear differences in the normal radiographic appearance of the abdominal organs between a left lateral vs. a right lateral view. While a few veterinary academic institutions have transitioned to a three-view abdominal radiographic study protocol, obtaining only two views of the canine abdomen remains the current standard in veterinary medicine. In this combined retrospective and prospective, case-controlled study, 48 canine patients presenting with signs of acute abdomen were recruited. Four board-certified veterinary radiologists and four general practice veterinarians with greater
