INTRODUCTION: This paper highlights research relating to pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) for adults with chronic respiratory diseases (CRD) published between January 2021 and May 2026.
METHODS: To identify studies for inclusion, three electronic databases were searched: MEDLINE, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and CINAHL. Search results were screened and relevant studies were grouped according to their topic area. Studies perceived to be of high quality and of substantial clinical importance were selected for inclusion in the review.
FINDINGS: This narrative review synthesised five

Rehabilitation research presents unique and challenging problems to investigators during both the design and analysis periods. Statistical issues regarding sample size requirements for an adequately powered study may be in direct conflict with realistic recruitment and subject retention goals. Issues of underpowered studies, sample size requirements, and recruitment goals plague rehabilitation research. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) are typically narrow in scope and thus lack generalizability to everyday, yet specific, clinical problems; they are also costly and time-consuming and require …

PURPOSE: To identify research priorities related to COVID rehabilitation from the perspectives of persons with lived experiences, clinicians, researchers, community organization and policy representatives.
MATERIALS & METHODS: We conducted five international consultations to identify key issues and research priorities in COVID rehabilitation using (i) web-based questionnaires, (ii) synchronous discussions, and (iii) content analysis of COVID rehabilitation research conference presentations. We collated responses and notes and then analyzed data using content analytical techniques.
RESULTS: T…

Ataxia, sedation, amnesia, ethanol and barbiturate potentiation, tolerance, dependence, and the potential for drug abuse plague the clinical use of anxiolytic benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepine and non-benzodiazepine ligands that are in current clinical use act as full allosteric modulators of GABA-gated Cl- channels, and on chronic administration trigger compensatory changes in the subunit expression of GABAA receptors. In these putative abnormal receptors, full allosteric modulators have low intrinsic activity and potency, and tolerance and dependence ensue. In this review, Erminio Costa and Al

Spasmodic torticollis (ST) is a focal dystonia that affects adults, causing limited muscle control and impacting daily activities and quality of life. The etiology and curative methods for ST remain unclear. Botulinum toxin is widely used as a first-line treatment, but long-term usage can result in reduced tolerance and adverse effects. Rehabilitation therapy, with its minimal side effects and low potential for harm, holds significant clinical value. This article explores the effectiveness of adjunctive therapies, including exercise therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, shockwave therapy

BACKGROUND: Demographic changes likely to occur in the near future and the need for planning to address them are behind the urgent drive to assess present-day provision and utilization of low-vision rehabilitation (LVR) services in the community. Perhaps even more important is the assessment of supporting research work in this field of health care. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to investigate the current involvement of researchers in Canada in the elucidation of the LVR sciences.
METHODS: A PubMed search of the MEDLINE database was performed. Publications were identified according

Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) is a common clinical problem that can lead to bladder and bowel dysfunction such as urinary incontinence, urinary retention, fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and sexual dysfunction. Pelvic floor rehabilitation aids are essential tools in the treatment of PFD. However, there is limited understanding of the efficacy and mechanisms of these aids, and there is a lack of standardized guidelines for selecting appropriate aids for different types of PFD. To assist patients in choosing suitable pelvic floor rehabilitation aids to their needs, it is necessary to

Recent years have witnessed significant advances in neuromodulation techniques for stroke rehabilitation, especially in ameliorating motor deficits, positioning them as a key focus in both research and clinical practice. The selection of stimulation targets is crucial, as different sites engage distinct neural mechanisms and yield varied therapeutic outcomes. This review systematically synthesizes evidence from neuromodulation studies that target key regions, including the cerebral hemispheres, sensorimotor cortex, cerebellum, and vagus nerve. By analyzing the stimulation protocols, therapeuti

PURPOSE: To describe the systematic revision of a Family Engagement in Research (FER) Framework within a pediatric rehabilitation context.
METHOD: Revision of the Framework involved: 1. Facilitating co-creation workshops with clients, families, staff, trainees and researchers; 2. Updating the Framework and developing supplementary tools to facilitate Framework use; and 3. Disseminating the updated Framework and accompanying tools.
RESULTS: The revision process resulted in an updated FER Framework at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital (HBKRH), which highlights three partnership ro

PURPOSE: Despite increasing evidence for the effectiveness of off-the-shelf and rehabilitation-specific active video games (AVGs) and virtual reality (VR) systems for rehabilitation, clinical uptake remains poor. A better match between VR/AVG system capabilities and client/therapist needs, through improved end-user involvement (UI) in VR/AVG implementation research, may increase uptake of this technology. The purpose of this paper is to review four case examples from the authors' collective experience of including end users in VR/AVG research to identify common benefits, challenges and lessons

Compact rehabilitation robot system which can support movement of the wrist of patients has been developed. The robot system can detect and analyze the patient's intention to move the wrist by such a biological signal as muscle potential, then, assist the wrist exercise of patients. Also, both-wrist rehabilitation robot system by mirror effect has been successfully developed for practical use in the hospital and at home.

PURPOSE: Despite increased recognition of the necessity of inclusive research and writing to encompass the diversity of human experience, discrepancies regarding how we conceptualize and describe disability persist. Differences in language signify differences in thinking, yet there also exist opportunities for reconciliation that center disability justice as a core tenet of rehabilitation research and practice. The purpose of this article is not merely to encourage academics to use the "right" language, but to question how we think about disability in our work and world.
