The site of neuromuscular blockade induced by polymyxin B and rolitetracycline was studied on isolated nerve and nerve-muscle preparations. Polymyxin B (1.8 X 10(-4) M) was equipotent to lidocaine as a local anaesthetic on a frog desheathed nerve preparation, while rolitetracycline (up to 3.6 X 10(-3)M) had no local anaesthetic effect. A comparative study was made on the effects of tetracycline (TC), rolitetracycline (RTC), and doxycycline (DC) at doses of 10-100 micrograms/g i.v. on serum GOT, GPT, bilirubin and urea levels of male and female mice. Combinations of cefotaxime (CTX) or other five beta-lactams with rolitetracycline (RTC) were examined using the checkerboard method for their synergistic effects against 27 strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and the combination of CTX and RTC was further evaluated for its synergistic effect in vitro and in vivo against 1 or 2 strains. We present a prospective single-blind trial of sclerotherapy for hydroceles with tetradecyl sulphate and rolitetracycline as sclerosants. Twenty-seven hydroceles were treated with tetradecyl sulphate and 28 with rolitetracycline. The median follow-up was 13 months. There were no statistically significant differences between the 2 drugs in respect of cure rate and complications. The overall cure rate for both drugs was 96%. Complications were rare and common to both drugs. Tetradecyl sulphate and rolitetracycline were found to be equally effective as sclerosants.

The effect of four tetracyclines, tetracycline, rolitetracycline, oxytetracycline and doxycycline, on human natural killer (NK) cell-mediated cytotoxicity was examined in vitro. Doxycycline was the only tetracycline which inhibited the NK cell activity. At concentrations of 10 micrograms/ml the drug caused approximately 50% inhibition of NK cell mediated cytotoxicity against K562 target. The inhibition was not a result of a toxic effect of the drug on NK cells. These results support the previous findings that doxycycline shows immunosuppressive properties.

We have developed a sensitive CE method to determine eight tetracyclines (TCs) (chlortetracycline, demeclocycline, doxycycline, methacycline, minocycline, oxytetracycline, TC, and rolitetracycline (RTC)) in honey samples.
