Salinity-adapted and core microbiota along the soil salinity gradients encircling the Tarim Basin.

BACKGROUND: Soil salinization affects nearly one-tenth of global drylands and imposes strong environmental filters on microbial communities. The Tarim Basin in Xinjiang, China, is one of the world's largest inland basins and an extreme saline-arid ecosystem, yet a basin-scale understanding of its microbiota remains lacking. In this study, we collected 132 soil samples along a salinity gradient spanning more than 3,000 km encircling the Tarim Basin. By combining amplicon sequencing with measurements of soil physicochemical properties, we aimed to unravel the salinity-adapted microbiota and core

Salinity and diatom host community jointly shape chytrid parasite diversity along a natural salinity gradient.

Parasitic fungi of the phylum Chytridiomycota are known parasites of phytoplankton, yet little is known about drivers of their diversity and host interaction dynamics in marine and brackish habitats. This study investigates the diversity and distribution patterns of phytoplankton-chytrid associations during a phytoplankton spring bloom along a natural salinity gradient of the Baltic Sea at a bi-weekly temporal resolution. Direct linking of chytrids to their host species using single-cell picking and sequencing (SCPS), combined with community composition analyses using amplicon sequencing and q

The effects of acute salinity challenges on osmoregulation in Mozambique tilapia reared in a tidally changing salinity.

This study characterizes the differences in osmoregulatory capacity among Mozambique tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus, reared in freshwater (FW), in seawater (SW) or under tidally driven changes in salinity. This was addressed through the use of an abrupt exposure to a change in salinity. We measured changes in: (1) plasma osmolality and prolactin (PRL) levels; (2) pituitary expression of prolactin (PRL) and its receptors, PRLR1 and PRLR2; (3) branchial expression of PRLR1, PRLR2, Na(+)/Cl(-) co-transporter (NCC), Na(+)/K(+)/2Cl(-) co-transporter (NKCC), α1a and α1b isoforms of Na(+)/K(+)-ATPa

Salinity and temperature increase impact groundwater crustaceans.

Anthropogenic impacts in groundwater ecosystems remain poorly known. Climate change is omnipresent, while groundwater salinization poses serious long-term environmental problems in arid and semi-arid regions, and is exacerbated by global warming. Both are present threats to the conservation of groundwater ecosystems, which harbour highly specialized species, with peculiar traits and limited geographic distributions. We tested the temperature and salinity tolerance of groundwater-adapted invertebrates to understand the effect of global warming and salinization in groundwater ecosystems. We used

Adaptation of teleosts to very high salinity.

A number of species of euryhaline teleosts have the remarkable ability to adapt and survive in environments of extreme salinity, up to two or even three times the osmolality of seawater. This review looks at some of the literature describing the adaptive changes that occur, primarily with intestinal water absorption and with the properties of the gill epithelium. While there is much that is still not completely understood, recent work has begun to look at these adaptations at the cellular and molecular level. As with seawater osmoregulation, fish adapting to hypersaline conditions generally in

High volume normal saline alone is as effective as nebulized salbutamol-normal saline, epinephrine-normal saline, and 3% saline in mild bronchiolitis.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effectivenesses of nebulized salbutamol, epinephrin, 3% saline, and normal saline (0.9% NaCl) in the treatment of mildly affected infants with acute bronchiolitis. We enrolled 186 children (mean age 9.5 +/- 5.3 months, range 1.5-24 months, 65.1% male) with a first episode of wheezing diagnosed as mild bronchiolitis in emergency department. Patients were randomized in a double-blind fashion to receive 4 ml dose either of 1.5 mg epinephrine plus normal saline (group 1; n = 38) or 1.5 mg epinephrine plus 3% saline (group 2; n = 39) or 2.5 mg salb

Differences in Salinity Performance Curves between Two Closely Related Poecilia Species: Implications for Species Turnover along a Salinity Gradient.

AbstractMany locomotor traits exhibit predictable variation along environmental gradients, which in turn influence the lower-level cellular and physiological processes that determine whole-organism performance (i.e., performance curves). While the impact of salinity on locomotor performance has been previously studied, few have investigated the ecological consequences of salinity-induced changes in performance. On the island of Trinidad, Poecilia reticulata are confined to freshwater, while the closely related Poecilia picta primarily inhabit lowland brackish water and saltwater. However, both

Hypertonic saline.

The optimal fluid for the resuscitation of critically ill and injured patients remains the subject of considerable controversy. Hypertonic crystalloid solutions such as hypertonic saline provide rapid volume expansion, have an acceptable safety profile, and are easy to store and transport. Recent meta-analyses suggest a trend toward increased survival in patients given hypertonic saline, and it has been suggested that they may have particular benefit in certain groups of patients such as hypovolaemic head injury patients. This short review examines the physiological and experimental evidence s

Hypertonic saline.

A key feature in the successful resuscitation of dehydrated or endotoxemic ruminants is the total amount of sodium administered. Administration of small volumes of HS and HSD offer major advantages over large volumes of isotonic saline because HS and HSD do not require intravenous catheterization or periodic monitoring, and are therefore suitable for use in the field. Hypertonic saline and HSD exert their beneficial effect by rapidly increasing preload and transiently decreasing afterload. Contrary to early reports, HS and HSD decrease cardiac contractility and do not activate a pulmonary refl

Family ties and acclimation to salinity in Solanaceae.

Belowground competition is affected by the presence and identity of neighboring plants, as well as by environmental conditions. We examined the effects of the degree of relatedness (DOR) of neighboring Solanaceae relatives under salinity stress vs. control. Cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) (C) and bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) (B) plants were grown individually or in pairs of high (H) DOR (CC and BB) and low (L) DOR (CB), under control and salinity conditions. In comparisons of plant responses to DOR and treatments, cherry tomato benefited from the presence of bell pepper, with incre

Comparison of normal saline, hypertonic saline and hypertonic saline colloid resuscitation fluids in an infant animal model of hypovolemic shock.

PURPOSE: Incorrect resuscitation after hypovolemic shock is a major contributor to preventable pediatric death. Several studies have demonstrated that small volumes of hypertonic or hypertonic-hyperoncotic saline can be an effective initial resuscitation solution. However, there are no pediatric studies to recommend their use. The aim of this study is to determine if in an infant animal model of hemorrhagic shock, the use of hypertonic fluids, as opposed to isotonic crystalloids, would improve global hemodynamic and perfusion parameters. METHODS: Experimental, randomized animal study includin

Inter-strain diversity among coastal picocyanobacteria across salinity gradients.

Strains of the picocyanobacteria genera Synechococcus and Cyanobium occur in cold-temperate zones, from coastal waters to the open ocean, spanning a range of salinities and water depths. To thrive across different salinities, picocyanobacteria strains acclimate internal turgor by expending metabolic energy to accumulate compatible solutes and extrude inorganic ions. We grew five picocyanobacterial strains, derived from a range of source habitat salinities, under a matrix of light and salinity levels. Although chlorophyll is a general proxy for phytoplankton biomass, Chl/cell is itself a key co

Progressive salinity drives flavonoid branch reprogramming in Anoectochilus roxburghii.

Flavonoids play critical roles in plant adaptation to abiotic stress; however, how salt stress modulates metabolic flux distribution within flavonoid branches remains poorly understood, particularly in non-model medicinal plants. Here, we integrated targeted metabolomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics to examine flavonoid regulation in Anoectochilus roxburghii under 0, 50, 100, and 200 mmol·L- 1 NaCl. Metabolite profiling showed that salinity reshaped flavonoid composition rather than uniformly increasing flavonoid abundance. A metabolite-derived branch bias index (MI), representing the bala

Multi-omics insights into salinity tolerance in African bermudagrass.

African bermudagrass (Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) is a key parent species used to produce interspecific hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon × C. transvaalensis). Due to the increasing use of non-potable water for landscape irrigation, salt stress has become a major concern in the turfgrass industry. While variation in salt tolerance is known within bermudagrass, the molecular basis of this trait is not well understood, particularly in African bermudagrass. In this study, we aimed to identify the molecular mechanisms associated with salt tolerance in African bermudagrass. The first-gen

Microbial Biofertilizers for Salinity Stress Mitigation in Hydroponic Systems.

Salinity accumulation is a critical abiotic constraint in hydroponic agriculture, particularly in recirculating systems, where limited leaching and nutrient cycling intensify ionic accumulation and increase the conductivity of nutrient solutions. Hydroponic crops are sensitive to osmotic and ionic stress, which leads to reduced water uptake, disrupted nutrient homeostasis, and yield loss. Traditional mitigation strategies, such as nutrient dilution, flushing, and water blending, provide temporary relief while increasing operational costs, nutrient discharge, and water consumption. Microbial bi

Salinity and Water-Related Disease Risk in Coastal Bangladesh.

An increase in surface and ground-water salinity due to climate change is reported to have become a great threat to the health of coastal inhabitants in Bangladesh. However, little is known about how much such salinity affects the risk of water-related diseases and how such risk can be mitigated in the field. This research examines the association between water-related diseases and coastal salinity along with sociodemographic and anthropometric factors. We conduct questionnaire surveys with 527 households: 273 subjects from the non-salinity and 254 subjects from the salinity rural coastal area

Salinity changes impact of hazardous chemicals in Enchytraeus albidus.

Supralittoral ecosystems are among the most challenging environments for soil organisms, particularly when salinity fluctuations are involved, frequently combined with the presence of contaminants as a result of intense anthropogenic activities. Knowledge of how salinity influences the effect of contaminants in supralittoral species is crucial for determining the safety factors required when extrapolating results from optimal laboratory conditions to these natural ecosystems. The present study therefore evaluated the effects of 2 metals (copper and cadmium) and 2 organic compounds (carbendazim

Multiple drivers of leaf litter decomposition under salinity stress.

Salinity shifts driven by global change can strongly influence detritus-based stream ecosystems by altering leaf litter decomposition, a key ecological process known to depend on both the identity and diversity of leaf litter. We conducted a controlled microcosm experiment to assess the interactive effects of salinity and leaf litter identity and diversity on decomposition mediated by a detritivorous isopod (Caecidotea sp.), on microbial decomposition, and on aquatic hyphomycete sporulation rate and assemblage composition. Our design included three salinity levels (0, 5 and 10 PSU) and three l
