Synovial cell sarcoma.

Synovial sarcoma of the head and neck is a rare lesion. Based on previous literature reports, these lesions carry a poor prognosis. Case reports of two patients diagnosed and treated recently for head and neck lesions of this type are presented. A review of pathologic sections at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) suggests that this lesion is more colmon than believed previously.

Mediastinal synovial sarcoma.

Synovial sarcoma of the mediastinum is a rare neoplasm that has overlapping histological and immunophenotypic features with other tumors in the differential diagnosis. We describe a case of this disease. The tumor was located at the right side of the pericardium, where an FDG-PET scan showed an uptake. It was resected, a resection which was complicated by the necessity of partially resecting the pericaridium and right middle lobe which were invaded by the tumor. The doubling time of the main tumor was 11.8 days. The margin of the resected specimen was tumor-free both macro- and microscopically

[Parapharyngeal synovial sarcoma].

A parapharyngeal biphasic synovial sarcoma arising in a 38-year-old man is reported. The rarity of this tumor in the head and neck and its multitude of histopathologic features are responsible for frequent initial misdiagnosis. The purpose of this report is to highlight the differential diagnosis with other cervical tumors.

Synovial sarcomas of the head and neck: comparative analysis with synovial sarcoma of the extremities.

OBJECTIVE: This study analyzed synovial sarcoma (SS) of the head and neck in order to identify features associated with survival improvement and compared them with the survival of SS of limbs. METHODS: Clinical charts and histopathologic material with analysis for SYT/SSX gene rearrangement of 16 patients were reviewed. The clinicopathologic features and their association with survival were analyzed and compared with 174 SS of limbs. RESULTS: The average age was 24.2 years (range 21-86). Eight cases occurred in each sex. The most frequent site was the parapharyngeal space (PPS). The mean tum

Synovial sarcoma. A Scandinavian Sarcoma Group project.

UNLABELLED: Synovial sarcoma accounts for 5-10% of all soft tissue sarcomas. More than 90% are found in the extremities or trunk wall. Characteristic for synovial sarcoma is the translocation t(X;18) (p11.2;q11.2). Cloning of the breakpoints of this translocation revealed fusion of two novel genes, SYT and SSX. The SYT gene, located on chromosome 18, is fused with one of three closely related genes; SSX1, SSX2 or SSX4 located on the X chromosome. The long term survival rates have continuously improved and have at best been reported to around 50%. However, since almost no population based studi

[Primary pericardial synovial sarcoma].

Primary pericardial synovial sarcoma is an extraordinarily very rare tumor with a poor prognosis, and little is known about its therapeutic management. We describe the case of a 51-year-old woman patient who underwent incomplete surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. To the best of our knowledge, no primary pericardial synovial sarcoma has been described which, after surgery, remains asymptomatic for 5 years, and until a control CT scan detects cardiac metastases that compromised the lumen of the right cavities and with chemotherapy, echocardiography demonstrated complete resoluti

[Synovial sarcoma. Case report].

In 2013 there were 94,770 new cancer patients reported in Hungary. Synovial sarcoma accounts for 0.05-0.1% of all cancers and, therefore its incidence is predicted to be 47-94 patients/year in Hungary. The authors report the history of a 18-year-old man who was operated on a right upper abdominal wall tumor with R1 resection. During the next 5 months the tumor grew up to 8 cm in largest diameter. Histology revealed monophasic synovial sarcoma. Immunohistochemistry showed bcl2, focal CD99 and high molecular weight cytokeratin positivity, while smooth muscle actin, S100 and CD34 immunostainings

Primary pleuropulmonary synovial sarcoma.

Pleuropulmonary synovial sarcoma (PPSS) is increasingly recognized as a subtype of sarcoma because of the recent identification of a distinctive chromosomal translocation specific to synovial sarcoma. Soft-tissue synovial sarcoma is far more common than PPSS and typically develops in para-articular locations of the extremities, affects young and middle-aged adults, with no difference in distribution between the sexes, and has well-documented radiologic manifestations. Pleuropulmonary synovial sarcoma can arise in the chest wall, heart, mediastinum, pleura, or lung, and it shares patient demogr

Primary pericardial synovial sarcoma.

A 57-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with cardiomegaly on a chest roentgenogram. A mediastinal tumor was observed during a chest computed tomographic scan and the patient was diagnosed with pericardial synovial sarcoma as a result of a tumor biopsy. Surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy were carried out, and although the tumor temporarily decreased in size, it subsequently increased and the patient died approximately 3 years following the initial medical examination. Most synovial sarcomas commonly occur in the vicinity of the joints of the extremities. Therefore, we herein report a

Primary cardiac synovial sarcoma.

Primary cardiac synovial sarcoma is an uncommon malignant neoplasm, with only a handful of cases reported in the English literature to date. Synovial sarcomas have also been described at other unusual sites, such as the heart, pleuropulmonary region, kidney, prostate, liver, mediastinum, retroperitoneum, gastrointestinal tract, and peripheral nerve. For synovial sarcomas that arise at these unusual locations, definitive diagnosis is challenging and requires use of ancillary diagnostic procedures, such as immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and molecular genetic techniques, for confirmat

Synovial sarcoma of the mandible.

Synovial sarcoma (SS) is a relatively common soft tissue tumor but only 6%-7% of cases are diagnosed in the head and neck region. It typically occurs in young adults and is slightly more common in males. The most common sites in the head and neck region are hypopharynx and parapharyngeal spaces. However, SS can also occur in tonsils, tongue, and orofacial soft tissues. It is not difficult to diagnose SS microscopically with its classic biphasic appearance, but the diagnosis of monophasic forms is more challenging especially in unusual locations. In this article, we report a rare case of monoph

[Synovial sarcoma of the pericardium].

A precordial tumor of the pericardium was radiologically diagnosed as the cause of an untypical clinical picture of heart disease in a 41-year-old soldier. As the patient had an increased asbestos exposure due to his profession, he was admitted to operation under the tentative diagnosis of a pericardial mesothelioma and the question of an occupational disease (BK 4105). Microscopic and immunohistochemical findings are compatible with the diagnosis of a synovial sarcoma of the pericardium. The present immunohistochemical marker spectrum allowed a reliable differentiation between synovial sarcom

Synovial sarcoma of the esophagus.

A 14-year-old girl presented with dysphagia and weight loss. Barium swallow, computed tomography, and endoscopy showed a polypoid intraluminal mass in the cervical esophagus. The tumor was locally resected and postoperative chemotherapy and radiotherapy were administered. Histological examination of the surgical specimen established a diagnosis of synovial sarcoma. The patient remains free of discernible disease 30 months after surgery. Esophageal sarcomas are rare tumors. This appears to be the second reported case of esophageal synovial sarcoma in a child.

[Synovial sarcomas of the neck].

The synovial sarcoma is a mesenchymal tumour that is very rare in the head and neck region. This is a report on two cases. In a 30-year old patient the tumour arose near the thyroid gland and the hypopharynx. He died in spite of surgical removal, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, one year after the first symptoms. An 8-year old boy was affected by a synovial sarcoma near the hyoid bone and is without recurrence after surgical removal, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Subsequently, the main diagnostic characteristics of these tumours are discussed. A better prognosis of the tumours associated with t

Synovial sarcoma of the hypopharynx.

Primary synovial sarcoma of the hypopharynx is an extremely rare neoplasm. Only 16 cases could be traced in the literature so far. An additional case, in a 29-year-old male patient, is presented. Progressive disturbance of deglutition and speech, chocking sensation, and mild respiratory distress were his original complaints. Our case differs from those previously reported in that a) the tumor was pedunculated, and the site of its attachment could be very well-defined, and b) unusual intratumoral destructive hemorrhage turned the case into an emergency. The pedicle was radically excised togethe
