The scapula connects the arm with the chest wall and is therefore of great importance for a free range of shoulder of motion. For a long-term scapular fractures had been treated predominantly conservative. However, clinical studies of the past decades revealed that some fracture patterns deserve operative treatment to prevent unfavorable functional outcome and chronic state of pain. Scapular fractures are predominantly acquired during high-energy trauma and these patients' presents with a mean of 3.9 associated injuries in the emergency department. Injuries to the head, chest and ipsilateral u

Total shoulder replacement has been shown to provide predictable pain relief and functional improvement in patients with glenohumeral arthritis. Loosening of the glenoid component remains the most frequent indication for revision surgery at long-term follow-up. The component most widely used is an all-polyethylene keeled or pegged design cemented to the glenoid cavity of the scapula. The glenoid is small and its cup-shaped morphology allows only a restricted site for limited fixation devices. This is particularly so in revision surgery where there are often large bony defects of the glenoid. I

Only three cases of scapular duplication have been described in English in the literature. We report a case of a child with duplication of the right scapula, operated on at our center with good results.

This is a report of a case of double acromion and double coracoid and a commentary on the comparative anatomy and embryology of the shoulder. Congenital elevation of the scapula, ossification of the transverse scapular ligament, clasp-like superior border of the scapula, coracoclavicular joint, coracoclavicular bridge, coracosternale bone, os acromiale, elongated acromion, convex glenoid, hypoplasia of the inferior border of the glenoid, dentated glenoid, infrascapular bone, and notched inferior angle of the scapula are other anomalies of the scapula reported in the literature.

Inferior scapula avulsion fractures are rare injuries, with few cases reported and only a small number managed operatively discussed in the literature. We report the case of a man in his 40s who fell from a height and presented with right-sided scapular winging and point tenderness at the inferior pole of his right scapula with no neurological deficit. Radiographs and CT diagnosed avulsion fracture of the inferior scapula. The patient underwent surgical fixation and, following a course of physiotherapy, successfully recovered with no residual winging and full range of movement.

Congenital high scapula is also known as Sprengel's deformity. The elevation of the scapula is accompanied by its rotation to a varus position. A series of 19 cases is presented, with 4 bilateral cases. A modified Woodward procedure was performed in all the surgical cases using the basic Woodward technique modified by correcting the tilting of the glena. The operative results were judged on cosmetic and functional criteria. The age of the patients and the presence of an omovertebral bone did not influence the results. Associated cervical spine anomalies were of negative prognosis. Results in t

Two thirds of the fractures of the scapula refer to its body, one third to its neck, and one forth to the glenoid. They are indicative of high-energy blunt trauma. Traffic injuries are their main cause. Associated ipsilateral upper torso injuries are common and have to be considered!Scapular fractures may be classified as being extra- or intraarticular. Extraarticular fractures concern the scapular body, its processes, or the scapular neck. A fracture of the surgical neck of the scapula accompanied by an injury to the coracoclavicular connection is regarded as a "floating shoulder". In this ca

Three patients, one woman aged 22 and two men aged 54 and 28, presented with scapular winging. In the first patient amyotrophic plexus neuralgia was diagnosed. The second patient most probably suffered from a stretch injury of the long thoracic nerve. The third patient had scapular winging due to an isolated paresis of the trapezius muscle, which was caused by an idiopathic lesion of the accessory nerve. In the first and second patient an improvement was noticeable after 9 months and 1.5 years respectively. There was no improvement in the third patient after 11 years. Paresis of the M. serratu

Complete duplication of the shoulder blade has not been described so far in the literature. Two case reports with a duplication of the right shoulder blade in multiple malformations of the locomotor and postural apparatus are presented. In both children, the shoulder blades were mobilized and fused. The late examination shows good functional and cosmetic results.

Common neurogenic causes of scapular winging are serratus anterior, trapezius and rhomboid palsy. Deformity is minimal in serratus anterior palsy (long thoracic nerve); winging is accentuated by forward elevation and pushing with outstretched arms. In trapezius palsy (spinal accessory nerve), the shoulder droops and winging is accentuated by arm abduction at the shoulder level. Rhomboid weakness (dorsal scapular nerve or C5 root) is best demonstrated by slowly lowering the arms from the forward elevated position.

One hundred thirty-seven fractures of the scapula in 121 patients were reviewed. The average age at the time of injury was 35 years, with fractures predominant in males (64%). The majority of cases (43%) involved fractures of the body of the scapula, with fractures of the scapular neck being second most common (26%). Automobile accidents produced the most injuries (52%), followed by auto-pedestrian (18%), falls (12%), and motorcycle accidents (11%). Associated bony or major soft-tissue trauma was present in all but 15 of the 121 patients, the most common being fractured ribs in 44%. Other asso

Author describes the paralysis of the serratus muscle in consequence of the paralysis of the long thoracic nerve. The form of appearance is the winged of "flying" scapula. Beside the presentation of the literary and anatomical data the own cases are described. Only conservative therapy was made, an operation was in no case necessary.

The scapula is a component of the shoulder girdle. Its structure has changed greatly during evolution. For example, in humans it is a large quite flat triangular bone whereas in chicks it is a long blade like structure. In this review we describe the mechanisms that control the formation of the scapula. To assimilate our understanding regarding the development of the scapula blade we start by addressing the issue concerning the origin of the scapula. Experiments using somite extirpation, chick-quail cell marking system and genetic cell labelling techniques in a variety of species have suggeste

Periscapular pain and dysfunction are relatively common complaints in the practice of upper extremity surgeons. However, evaluation of the dysfunctional scapula is intimidating for most. Physical examination of the periscapular muscles is very rich, and a systematic approach provides the opportunity to establish a diagnosis for most patients. Conditions underlying scapular dysfunction include trapezius palsy, serratus palsy, brachial plexus injuries, muscular dystrophy, snapping scapula, pectoralis minor syndrome, congenital undescended scapula, and functional scapular dyskinesis, among others

Majority of primary pediatric neuroblastomas occur in the abdomen, followed by posterior mediastinum. A 7-year-old girl presented worsening pain in the left shoulder, and a CT image of the chest revealed osseous destruction in the left scapula, suggestive of bone tumor. A biopsy was performed. Pathological result was consistent with neuroblastoma. A 123I scan with SPECT/CT images was performed, which showed only increased activity in the left scapula without any other foci of abnormal activity elsewhere.

Authors call attention, describing 3 cases of their own, to the diagnostical difficulties of these rare injuries. They think the axillary Roentgenogram, except the dislocated fractures of the humerus, in all injuries of the shoulder region necessary. In 2 cases operations were performed, 1 patient was treated conservatively. In case of fracture of the process with impirtant dislocation operation is suggested. The patients healed with good functional results.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether scapular downward tilt (ScDT) and dynamic scapular lateral rotation (ScLR) in subjects with and without stroke is associated with subluxation, and to prove the reliability of a Scapula Locator System in an elderly population.
DESIGN: Repeated measures of ScLR by 2 observers.
SETTING: Outpatient rehabilitation department of a district general hospital.
PARTICIPANTS: To test device reliability, 5 healthy men (mean age +/- standard deviation, 72 +/- 5 yr). To test scapula position, 30 stroke patients (19 men, 11 women; mean age, 73 +/- 6 yr) and 15 healthy cont
