Sense of Coherence and Gambling: Exploring the Relationship Between Sense of Coherence, Gambling Behaviour and Gambling-Related Harm.

Understanding why some people experience problems with gambling whilst others are able to restrict gambling to recreational levels is still largely unexplained. One potential explanation is through salutogenesis, which is a health promotion approach of understanding factors which move people towards health rather than disease. An important aspect of salutogenesis is sense of coherence. Individuals with stronger sense of coherence perceive their environment as comprehensible, manageable and meaningful. The present study examined the relationship of individuals' sense of coherence on their gambl

Thematic analysis of Antonovsky's sense of coherence theory.

Antonovsky's sense of coherence (SOC) theory relates to the adaptive capacity of humans. In response to Antonovsky's call to study the sense of coherence concept using methods other than his orientation to life questionnaire, and to further test the application of the concept, qualitative research methods were employed. Using thematic analysis this study investigated how sense of coherence theory applied when mapped onto descriptions by 20 mental health service users of how they deal with problems that they face in their lives. The thematic analysis revealed that sense of coherence theory mapp

Sense of Coherence in persons with late effects of polio.

BACKGROUND: Sense of Coherence (SOC) is important for successful adaptation and mental well-being in people with life-long medical conditions. Late effects of polio (LEoP) often lead to a life-long disability, but no study has assessed SOC in this population. OBJECTIVE: To assess SOC in persons with LEoP and to explore the association between SOC, demographics (age, gender, marital status and level of education) and variables related to LEoP (age at polio onset, number of years from polio until onset of LEoP and self-rated disability). METHOD: Ninety-three community-dwelling persons with cli

The enduring role of sense of coherence in facing the pandemic.

Research has been focussing on protective and resistance-related factors that may help people face the long-lasting psychological challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sense of coherence allows to remain healthy and to recover after stressful or traumatic life experiences. We aimed at investigating whether, and the extent to which, social support, in terms of both family and friends support, mediated the well-established link between sense of coherence and mental health as well as that between sense of coherence and COVID-19-related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. In May 2021, 3

Sense of coherence moderates late effects of early childhood Holocaust exposure.

This study evaluated child Holocaust survivors with an emphasis on potential protective factors facilitating participants' adaptation to post-Holocaust life. We examined Antonovsky's (1979, 1987) salutogenic paradigm, testing the mediating and moderating effect of participants' sense of coherence (SOC) on the association between early childhood deprivation due to Holocaust persecution and posttraumatic stress later in life. The nonclinical sample, composed of 203 child Holocaust survivors born between 1935 and 1944 completed questionnaires on Holocaust survival exposure, inventories on current

Disentangling Sense of Coherence and Resilience in case of multiple traumas.

BACKGROUND: Depressive and anxiety disorders (DAD) are a major public health problem. Trauma endured during childhood is known to increase the risk of DAD in adulthood. We investigate the hypothesis that Sense of Coherence (SOC) is a mediator between childhood trauma and depressive and anxious symptoms (DAD) in adulthood. We also explore the nature (personality trait or aptitude) of SOC and attempt to disentangle the concepts of resilience and SOC. METHOD: Former hidden children (FHC), the Jewish youths who spent World War II in various hideaway shelters across Nazi-occupied Europe, were comp

Aggression, Alexithymia and Sense of Coherence in a Sample of Schizophrenic Outpatients.

Schizophrenia elevates the risk for aggressive behavior, and there is a need to better understand the associated variables predicting aggression for treatment and prevention purposes. The aim of the present study is to determine the relationship between alexithymia, sense of coherence and aggressive behavior in a sample of schizophrenic outpatients. Using a correlational research design, standardized self-report questionnaires assessed aggression (brief aggression questionnaire—BAQ), alexithymia (Toronto Alexithymia Scale—TAS) and sense of coherence (sense of coherence questionnaire—SOC) in a

Association Between Sense of Coherence and Tobacco Use Among Brazilian Adolescent Students.

Background: Investigating tobacco use and associated factors is essential to set priorities and health promotion strategies among adolescents. Several studies examined the relationship between this behavior and the psychosocial salutogenic construct Sense of Coherence (SOC), but the evidence is limited to adolescents in high-income countries. This study aimed to analyze the association between tobacco use and SOC among Brazilian adolescent students. Methods: A cross-sectional school-based survey was conducted in 2018. Dependent variables were categorical binary (Yes/No): (1) Smoking experiment

Positioning the Sense of Coherence (SOC) in Disaster Recovery Planning and Design.

"Whence the strength?" This compelling question, posed by Aaron Antonovsky in 1979, sets the stage for understanding the role of sense of coherence (SOC), a human-focused psychosocial concept, in fostering resilience amidst escalating climate-induced disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes. This paper is the first step in a larger research agenda aimed at exploring how the human experience of disasters, guided by Antonovsky's SOC framework, can be better integrated into disaster recovery planning and design, laying the theoretical foundation for subsequent studies. This paper exa

Sense of coherence and coping behaviours in persons with late effects of polio.

BACKGROUND: Sense of coherence (SOC), comprising "comprehensibility", "manageability" and "meaningfulness", is important for successful adaptation in persons with late effects of polio (LEoP) and can be used as an estimate of the ability to cope with stressors. Coping behaviours are the actions a person performs to reduce stress and can be divided into problem-focused coping, emotion-focused coping and less useful coping. Our knowledge is very limited of what coping behaviours persons with LEoP use to manage their life situation as well as the association between SOC and coping behaviours. OB

Sense of Coherence mediates the association between temporomandibular disorders and quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate whether sense of coherence (SOC) mediates the association between temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and general quality of life (QoL) in Brazilian elders. METHODS: Informations on sociodemographic, psychological, and presence or absence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) were collected by trained dentists among non-institutionalized elders (n = 110). OHRQoL was measured with the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and QoL using the WHOQOL-BREF. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to estimate th

Sense of coherence in long-term follow-up of adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Sense of coherence (SOC) is a personal resource that allows people to stay healthy in spite of stressful situations. SOC is known to be low in eating disorders. We explored whether SOC correlated with anorexia nervosa (AN) symptoms several years after initial hospitalization for AN, to inform us whether AN treatment concepts could more specifically focus on increasing SOC. METHODS: Former patients were contacted 5-11 years after hospitalization for AN in a German integrative medicine hospital. Participants completed the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI-2) and the SOC Questionnaire (

Resilient appliance therapy of temporomandibular disorders. Subdiagnoses, sense of coherence and treatment outcome.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) with orofacial pain with or without reduced jaw function, are frequent conditions in the general population. Different factors such as tooth clenching and grinding, sometimes due to enhanced psychosocial stress, and trauma to the jaws may be important as etiologic factors. Signs and symptoms of TMD are a common cause for general practitioners to use different intraoral appliances as pain and bite-force reducing devices and for improvement of a reduced jaw function. Intraoral appliances are often used parallel to other treatment modalities. Before treatment sta
