We have studied greatly enhanced cortical responses to somatosensory stimuli [giant somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) or magnetic field (SEF)] and cortical activities preceding the myoclonus (premyoclonus spike) in patients with cortical myoclonus, using magnetoencephalographic (MEG) techniques. A P1m component of giant SEF was estimated as a dipole positioned on the postcentral gyrus in all giant SEFs. This indicates that abnormally enhanced responses to sensory stimuli originate from the sensory cortex. In most of the patients with cortical reflex myoclonus, a dipole for the premyoclonus

Bilabial, alveolar and velar sounds are produced at different locations around the oral cavity. fMRI was used to localize cortical representation of articulation in seven healthy subjects during repetitive lip and vertical tongue movements as well as repetitive articulation of /pa/ (bilabial), /ta/ (alveolar), /ka/ (velar consonants) and a combination of all three in /pataka/. Centers of gravity (COG) analysis of fMRI activation in the primary motor (M1) and sensory cortex (S1) revealed /pa/- adjacent to lip representation and /ta/- articulation to tongue representation. The articulation of /p

The neuronal mechanisms by which the brain flexibly transforms perceived numerical values into corresponding numbers of self-generated actions remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated this sensorimotor transformation process in the parietal cortex of two male rhesus macaques performing a manual counting task. Monkeys viewed visual numerical cues and produced a corresponding number of hand movements. Single-neuron recordings from the ventral intraparietal area (VIP)-a region known to represent perceived numerosity-revealed tuning to the number of intended actions during motor planning. T

The action of topical convulsants, such as strychnine, is not exerted equally on all sets of neurons in the sensorimotor cortex of cats. Small-field neurons near the surface are influenced whereas deeper, wide-field neurons are affected only indirectly. The agent, picrotoxin, was used to test whether or not the deeper neurons are spared the effects of topical convulsants simply because of their location. Picrotoxin, injected intravenously, produced enhancement of the corticofugal reflex discharge evoked by stimulation of any of the four paws and by auditory stimulation. The surface-recorded pr

The Cairo spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus), a promising animal model in neuroscience, lacks a detailed neuroanatomical map of its cerebral cortex. This study aims to delineate the location and internal subdivision of the sensorimotor cortex, specifically the region controlling the hindlimb. For this purpose, retrograde tracing from the lumbar spinal cord using Fast Blue was combined with immunohistochemical characterization using neuronal markers (NeuN, SMI-32, and calbindin 28 kDa) in adult animals. Fast Blue-labeled neurons were identified in layer V within the cortical region defined as the s

Sensorimotor adaptation ensures movement accuracy despite continuously changing environment and body. Adaptation of saccadic eye movements is a classical model of sensorimotor adaptation. Beside the well-established role of the brainstem-cerebellum in the adaptation of reactive saccades (RSs), the cerebral cortex has been suggested to be involved in the adaptation of voluntary saccades (VSs). Here, we provide direct evidence for a causal involvement of the parietal cortex in saccadic adaptation. First, the posterior intraparietal sulcus (pIPS) was identified in each subject using functional ma

INTRODUCTION: The growing mastery of motor tasks is one of the most visible changes in the developing child. The cortex is known to play a central role in learning, planning, and performance of motor tasks. We investigated the age dependency of motor cortex activation using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
METHODS: Thirty-two right-handed subjects were studied: 11 children (median age 9 years, range 6 - 10 years), 10 adolescents (median age 13 years, range 11 - 15 years), and 11 adults (median age 27 years, range 23 - 42 years). The subjects performed a simple, paced unilateral m

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays a key role in flexible, context-dependent decision-making. Yet, the population-level mechanisms that support this flexibility remain unclear: is there a generalist neural population involved in representing useful information across tasks, or are representations distributed over multiple modules of task-specialized subpopulations? Here, we investigate whether the population structure modularity in medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) increases with sensorimotor remapping between task rules in three different paradigms. In a paradigm where all stimuli were remapped,

PURPOSE: To correlate the perirolandic low signal intensity seen on T2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images in neonates and infants with the anatomically located sensorimotor cortex.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Axial T2-weighted MR images of 146 consecutive patients less than 6 months old were reviewed. The sensorimotor cortex was located by identifying the central sulcus. Two independent readers attempted to identify the central sulcus using two anatomic methods independently and in combination. The location of the central sulcus was compared with that of the perirolandic low signal intensity.

Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is characterized by an involuntary laryngeal muscle spasm during vocalization. Previous studies measured brain activation during voice production and suggested that SD arises from abnormal sensorimotor integration involving the sensorimotor cortex. However, it remains unclear whether this abnormal sensorimotor activation merely reflects neural activation produced by abnormal vocalization. To identify the specific neural correlates of SD, we used a sound discrimination task without overt vocalization to compare neural activation between 11 patients with SD and healthy p

The sensorimotor cortex is somatotopically organized to represent the vocal tract articulators such as lips, tongue, larynx, and jaw. How speech and articulatory features are encoded at the subcortical level, however, remains largely unknown. We analyzed LFP recordings from the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and simultaneous electrocorticography recordings from the sensorimotor cortex of 11 human subjects (1 female) with Parkinson's disease during implantation of deep-brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes while they read aloud three-phoneme words. The initial phonemes involved either articulation prim

Dopaminergic projections to primary sensorimotor cortex (SMC) have been described anatomically, but their functional role is unknown. The objective here was to characterize how dopamine modulates the somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) and its receptive field in SMC. SEPs were evoked by median and tibial nerve stimulation and recorded using thin-film multielectrode arrays implanted epidurally over the caudal sensorimotor cortex of rats. SEP amplitudes and receptive fields were measured before and after intracortical injection of a D1- (SCH 23390) or a D2-receptor antagonist (raclopride). Both

The tonic increased influence of the superior colliculus (SC) on the formation of visual responses of the sensorimotor cortex (SMC) was shown on the alert rabbits. It was shown that SC influence was realized through tectothalamocortical (nucleus lateralis posterior) canal relation. It was established that SMC of the alert rabbits in its turn exerts the inhibitory phasic influence on SC function. The obtained data are discussed in the light of participation of the colliculo-cortical and cortico-collicular interactions in the organization of the visual-motor coordination necessary for realizatio

The structure and ultrastructure of the sensomotor cortex in pubertal rats were studied 7, 14 and 21 days after acoustic stress. Focal peripheral chromatolysis and pigment accumulation by lysosomes were found in neurons after 14 and 21 days of exposure to noise. The number of lysosomes in which pigment was accumulated, and multivesicular bodies appeared, increased in the glial cells. The cavities of granular reticulum widened because of the accumulation by them of muddy secretion. These phenomena indicate the diffusive character of structural changes in the cortex of the large hemispheres unde

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a debilitating chronic pain disorder typically in the upper or lower limbs. While CRPS usually develops from a peripheral event, it is likely maintained by CNS changes. Indeed, CRPS is reported to be associated with sensorimotor cortex changes, or functional "reorganization," as well as deficits such as poor tactile acuity. While the mechanisms underpinning cortical reorganization in CRPS are unknown, some have hypothesized that it involves disinhibition (i.e., a reduction in GABA activity). In this study, we addressed this hypothesis by using edited ma

The picture of the human cortical motor system has fully changed in the last two decades. In the light of new data, the notion of a motor system devoted solely to action execution, strictly isolated from the sensory system, is not sustainable. There is evidence that parietal areas are strictly connected to frontal areas and these connections build up sensorimotor circuits aimed at interacting with objects in the environment, and at understanding actions. They are known as the canonic neuron system and mirror neuron system, respectively. These circuits are part of the classic dorsal stream. Rec

Movement disorders of basal ganglia origin may arise from abnormalities in synchronized oscillatory activity in a network that includes the basal ganglia, thalamus and motor cortices. In humans, much has been learned from the study of basal ganglia local field potentials recorded from temporarily externalized deep brain stimulator electrodes. These studies have led to the theory that Parkinson's disease has characteristic alterations in the beta frequency band (13-30 Hz) in the basal ganglia-thalamocortical network. However, different disorders have rarely been compared using recordings in the

In awake mobile rabbits, with electrodes implanted in the medial lemniscus, midbrain tegmental reticular nucleus, and pyramidal tract, combined stimulation of two brain of two brain structures resulted in elaboration of conditional connections in sensorimotor cortex neuronal populations. The main criterion of the conditioning was the appearance of changes in the neuronal activity on omission of the second stimulus. These changes represented a complex of electrical events, some of which were similar to and others different from the evoked responses to the second stimulus. Application of atropin

Pain perception is associated with priming of the motor system and the orienting of attention in healthy adults. These processes correspond with decreases in alpha and beta power in the sensorimotor and parietal cortices. The goal of the present study was to determine whether these findings extend to individuals with chronic pain. Individuals with chronic jaw pain and pain-free controls anticipated and experienced a low pain or a moderate pain-eliciting heat stimulus. Although stimuli were calibrated for each subject, stimulus temperature was not different between groups. High-density EEG data

Interplay between posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and ipsilateral primary motor cortex (M1) is crucial during execution of movements. The purpose of the study was to determine whether functional PPC-M1 connectivity in humans can be modulated by sensorimotor training. Seventeen participants performed a sensorimotor training task that involved tapping the index finger in synchrony to a rhythmic sequence. To explore differences in training modality, one group (n = 8) learned by visual and the other (n = 9) by auditory stimuli. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to assess PPC-M1 conn
