Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm.

Bicuspid aortic valve is one of the most common congenital cardiac anomalies and it may be accompanied by other cardiovascular anomalies. Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm is a rare anomaly in adult population, but it coexists with bicuspid aortic valve quite often. This report describes a 57 years-old patient who had a bicuspid aortic valve accompanied by unruptured Valsalva sinus aneurysm with significant left anterior narrowing and who underwent successful surgery with ascending aorta and aortic valve replacement as well as coronary by-pass grafting.

Sinus of Valsalva aneurysms.

Sinus of Valsalva aneurysms are rare cardiac anomalies which may be acquired or congenital. The congenital aneurysm is more common than the acquired form, with an incidence ranging from 0.1 to 3.5% of all congenital heart defects. Acquired aneurysms may result from trauma, endocarditis, syphilis, Marfan's syndrome, and senile-type dilatation in which the three sinuses dilate as a result of the normal aging process. This review focuses on both congenital and acquired aneurysms with particular attention to the noninvasive diagnosis of this anomaly.

Aneurysm of the sinus of valsalva.

Aneurysms of the sinus of Valsalva (ASVs) are rare. They can be congenital or acquired through infection, trauma, or degenerative diseases. They frequently co-occur with ventricular septal defects, aortic valve dysfunction, or other cardiac abnormalities. Although unruptured ASVs are usually asymptomatic, ruptured ASVs often cause symptoms similar to those of heart failure and produce a continuous, mechanical-sounding murmur. Transsternal or transesophageal echocardiography is usually effective in detecting ASVs. Because symptomatic ASVs pose significant risks for the patient, and because the

Aneurysms of the sinus of Valsalva.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the properties of the coexistent cardiac anomalies associated with the aneurysm of sinus of Valsalva (ASV) and examine the long-term surgical results after operation. PATIENTS: From 1980 to 1994, nine patients (median age 22 years) underwent surgical correction of ASV. Aneurysms originated from the right (n = 5), noncoronary (n = 3) and left coronary sinus (n = 1) and entered into right ventricle (n = 5), right atrium (n = 3). In one patient, ASV originated from the left coronary sinus and unruptured. Coexistent cardiac lesions were aortic valve insufficiency (n = 4), v

The anatomy of the sinus of Valsalva.

The anatomy of the aortic root has been studied in different species, and common structural features of importance have been detailed. The findings confirm the universal presence of a well-marked ridge limiting the distal extent of the aortic sinuses. Redefining the sinuses in this way shows that normally the coronary ostia lie within the sinus proximal to the ridge and it appears that their position relative to the ridge is related to an animal's fleetness. Aortic cusps in the fresh state have no recoil tendency to bring them into apposition but lie in a collapsed open position. It is suggest

Right sinus of Valsalva aneurysm.

Aneurysms in the sinuses of Valsalva (SVA) are the least frequent and occur due to a weakness in the aortic wall that forms part of the sinus. This causes dilatation and the formation of a blind pocket in one of the aortic sinuses (usually he right sinus and less frequently the posterior one). It may be congenital or acquired: in a congenital SVA, the condition is frequently associated with Marfan's syndrome or other connective tissue disorders; instead, acquired forms of sinus of Valsalva aneurysm are associated with infections (syphilis, bacterial endocarditis, and tuberculosis), atheroscler

Ruptured sinus of valsalva aneurysms.

Ruptured aneurysms of the aortic sinuses of Valsalva have been a surgical rarity at the Karolinska Hospital. Only nine such cases were operated on over a 13-year period (1968-1971). All nine aneurysms were of congenital type. They originated in the right coronary or the non-coronary sinus and drained into the right ventricle or the right atrium. All five ventricular entries were combined with a VSD in the membranous septum. No patient was in critical condition, despite significant left-to-right shunt and reduced aortic diastolic pressure. Aortic root angiography conclusively demonstrated the r

Ruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm: transaortic repair may cause sinus of Valsalva distortion and aortic regurgitation.

OBJECTIVES: Recurrent or newly developing aortic regurgitation is a critical problem after the repair of ruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm. METHODS: A retrospective review of 56 patients who underwent surgical repair of ruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm between June 1990 and August 2006 was performed. Rupture of the right coronary sinus into the right ventricle was the most common anatomic type (39/56, 69.6%). Preoperative aortic regurgitation equal to or greater than grade II (n = 8, 17.9%) was managed by repair (aortic valvuloplasty, n = 5) or replacement (n = 3). Ruptured sinus of Vals

Roentgenology of sinus of Valsalva aneurysms.

Aneurysms of the sinuses of Valsava are neither rare nor always fatal. They are of three types: congenital, acquired, and associated with cystic medial necrosis. Each can be recognized by its characteristic appearance on plain roentgenograms and arteriography. With surgical repair, the congenital type and that which is the result of cystic medial necrosis carry a good prognosis for the patient. With the acquired type, usually syphilitic, the prognosis with conservative management is good.

Sinus of Valsalva Aneurysm in Females.

Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SVA) is a rare cardiovascular disease with male predominance. Recently, an association with aortic aneurysm and SVA has been revealed in periventricular nodular heterotopia patients with loss-of-function Filamin A (FLNA) mutations, which were located on chromosome X and almost exclusively affect females.Among patients hospitalized for aortic surgery with aortic root diameter over 4.0 cm, next-generation sequencing was performed to investigate 30 candidate genes related to inherited aortic aneurysm syndromes and familial thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection. The p

Ruptured congenital sinus of valsalva aneurysms.

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: Rupture of the sinus of Valsalva is rare, and there is a higher incidence of such rupture in Oriental countries than elsewhere. The objective of this study is to present the pathologic features and the clinical outcome after surgery in such patients. METHODS: Between 1980 and 2001, a total of 17 patients (15 males and 2 females) with ruptured aneurysm of sinus of Valsalva underwent surgical intervention at the Tri-Service General Hospital, Taiwan. Their age ranged from 22 to 59 years with a mean of 33.5 years. These surgical operations made up 0.51% of the tot

Ruptured aneurysm of the sinus of Valsalva.

The objective of the present study was to assess the value of imaging techniques in the diagnosis of ruptured aneurysm of sinus of Valsalva (RASV). 38 patients were included in the study. 30 were male and 8 female. Their age ranged from 7 to 55 years (mean 25.8 years). Echocardiographic and doppler studies were done in all cases and 20 patients underwent catheterization and angiography. Two patients were asymptomatic, 20 (53%) had acute onset of symptoms and in the remaining 16 (42%) patients symptoms developed gradually. Twenty two (58%) patients were in NYHA functional class III or IV when f

Unruptured aneurysm of the sinus of Valsalva.

A 50-year-old man with 'presyncope' is presented. He was found to have an aneurysm of the right coronary sinus of Valsalva and an aneurysm of the noncoronary sinus. Neither aneurysm had ruptured. It is postulated that the patient's symptoms were related to partial obstruction of the right ventricle. Other potential complications of an unruptured aneurysm of the sinus of Valsalva are discussed.

Ruptured aneurysms of the sinus of Valsalva.

From 1969 to 1989, 15 patients with an aneurysm of the sinus of Valsalva underwent operative correction. This represents 0.23% of 6515 cardiac operations with cardiopulmonary bypass during that time. There were 8 males and 7 females ranging in age from 15 to 54 years (mean 35.8 years). Symptoms of congestive heart failure, fatigue and palpitation were common. All patients underwent cardiac catheterization including aortography. Associated lesions included aortic valve regurgitation in 6 patients and a ventricular septal defect in 3 patients. The following connections occurred: right coronary s
