Building upon previous exploratory qualitative research (Kidd SA (2003) Child Adol Social Work J 20(4):235-261), this paper examines the mental health implications of social stigma as it is experienced by homeless youth. Surveys conducted with 208 youths on the streets and in agencies in New York City and Toronto revealed significant associations between perceived stigma due to homeless status and sexual orientation, pan handling and sex trade involvement, and amount of time homeless. Higher perceived stigma was also related to low self esteem, loneliness, feeling trapped, and suicidal ideatio

Crouzon syndrome is a rare genetic disorder caused due to genetic mutations. It is characterised by partial hearing loss, dry eyes, strabismus and underdevelopment of the upper jaw with facial deformities and malocclusion. These facial deformities greatly affect the social and emotional development of the affected child. The present case report highlights the social problems faced by a child suffering with Crouzon syndrome.

Empirical evidence confirms both the pervasiveness and the significant impact of stigma among people with epilepsy (PWE). Despite being one of the most extensively studied neurological disorders, epilepsy continues to carry a disproportionate social burden across cultures and historical periods. Stigma is not only a psychological consequence but also a chronic social determinant of health that negatively affects quality of life, social participation, and long-term outcomes. Recent research highlights the multidimensional nature of epilepsy-related stigma, including internalized, enacted, and i

Gingival enlargement can be multifactorial; it can be due to nutritional deficiency or can be because of several drugs. Poor oral hygiene may further worsen the gingival hyperplasia, because of which the patient may have difficulty in chewing the food, and the speech may get affected. It may end up in psychosocial stigma for the patient as the patient is even neglected by friends or relatives due to poor oral hygiene and horrifying look of gingival overgrowth. Here, we report a case of gingival enlargement in a 22-year-old married female. The enlargement was massive, such that the teeth were b

BACKGROUND: Through the story of two families presenting ichthyosis, we report the support and social integration difficulties inherent in these genetic diseases.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Family No. 1: a 38-year-old shepherd and his wife of 25 years both had lamellar ichthyosis that had been present continually since childhood. They had had 2 stillborn infants as well as a live newborn that were all presenting lamellar ichthyosis. Family No. 2: a 45-year-old housewife was seen at our consultation with her 3 youngest children aged 8 years, 6 years and 18 months. According to the mother, at birth,

INTRODUCTION: Patients with epilepsy have poor social outcome. Multifactorial factors are usually involved, but among them, stigma features may have an important role. Genetic generalized epilepsies (GGEs) were previously considered "benign" syndromes. The aim of our study was to assess social impairment and stigma in GGE and to evaluate differences between the following GGE subsyndromes: juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), juvenile absence epilepsy (JAE), and generalized tonic-clonic seizures alone (GTCSA). Additionally, we compared these outcomes with outcomes from a cohort of patients with e

BACKGROUND: Research on stigma management strategies in autism relies on questionnaires or experiments, leading to a gap in understanding of how to identify the strategies in naturalistic interactions. The identification of individual (adapting minority group characteristics) and collective (positively redeveloping the in-group) stigma management strategies in online communication is important for understanding how to improve the quality of social media experiences for autistic users.
METHODS: Using linguistic analysis and engaging with ethnographic perspectives on relationship management, th

AIM: The aim of this research is to gain a more complete understanding of the impact of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) on women.
METHOD: This research used qualitative methods. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with eight HCV-positive women. The interviews explored counselling and testing, social stigma, treatment options, transmission and gender roles, and the influence of reductionism on the experience of HCV-positive women attending services.
FINDINGS: All the women experienced significant difficulties coming to terms with the diagnosis. Many had worries about transmission and stig

BACKGROUND: People with essential tremor (ET) can be subject to stigma, and some adopt avoidance behaviors. Characteristics associated with ET stigma and the relationship between perceived stigma and social dysfunction have not been studied.
OBJECTIVES: To discern predictors of perceived stigma and social dysfunction in ET, and to identify potentially treatable psychological factors associated with social dysfunction.
METHODS: We surveyed ET patients (n = 158) on recalled stigma incidents and social dysfunction related to tremor, as well as clinical and demographic characteristics including

In our society, the social stigma against people who suffer from mood disorders is a very powerful factor that negatively affects the healing of patient. He is often isolated from the others for the fear of being judged "fool, crazy or dangerous" or discriminated and emarginated for his mental health problem. For this reason, a cornerstone of mood disorder rehabilitation is the bringing out of the patient from his isolation, the reintegration of the user in the social context with the increase and the improvement in the quality of interpersonal relationships in the family and in the external c

Background and aims Public stigma diminishes the health of stigmatized populations, so it is critical to understand how and why stigma occurs to inform stigma reduction measures. This study aimed to examine stigmatizing attitudes held toward people experiencing problem gambling, to examine whether specific elements co-occur to create this public stigma, and to model explanatory variables of this public stigma. Methods An online panel of adults from Victoria, Australia (N = 2,000) was surveyed. Measures were based on a vignette for problem gambling and included demographics, gambling behavior,

Initial validation of the HIV/AIDS Provider Stigma Inventory (HAPSI), piloted on a sample of 174 nursing students, supported the psychometric qualities of a suite of measures capturing tendencies to stigmatize and discriminate against people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA). Derived from social psychology and mindfulness theories, separate scales addressing awareness, acceptance, and action were designed to include notions of labeling, stereotyping, outgrouping, and discriminating. These were enhanced to capture differences associated with personal characteristics of PLHA that trigger secondary sti

In the process of collecting sexual behaviour data through in-depth interviews, 24 respondents offered information on stigma related to HIV-1 infection. Observations of social relations in public places and families of infected individuals were made. The findings suggest that although HIV/AIDS-related stigma has had adverse effects on treatment seeking behaviour of PWAs and coping mechanisms of their families, a more tolerant attitude is starting to emerge in this area. Probably, due to improvements in counselling services and home care schemes for those with AIDS. This supports the call for i

BACKGROUND: People affected by neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are frequently the target of social stigmatization. To date not much attention has been given to stigma in relation to NTDs. The objective of this review is to identify the extent of social stigma and the similarities and differences in the causes, manifestations, impact of stigma and interventions used between the NTDs.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in Pubmed, ScienceDirect, PsycINFO and Web of Knowledge. The search encompassed 17 NTDs, including podoconiosis, but not leprosy as this NTD has recently been reviewed

BACKGROUND: The incidence of Parkinson's disease (PD) is increasing more rapidly than any other neurodegenerative disorder. Motor and non-motor symptoms, and deficits in cognition and communication, negatively impact people with PD's social functioning and can result in enacted and felt stigma. The aim of this scoping review is to explore the determinants and effects of stigma in PD.
METHODS: This scoping review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews. Quantitative and qualitative studies from January 2000 to April 2026 focusing on stigma in PD were considered for

In May 2022, when the COVID-19 pandemic began to recede from public view, another infectious disease surprised the world-mpox (formerly monkeypox). It appeared to disproportionately affect gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Using qualitative thematic analysis and social representations theory, we analysed a corpus of 91 items from a variety of news outlets that included GBMSM community members' personal accounts of living through an mpox outbreak. The aim was to study the various ways in which members of a marginalised group created social representations of mpox and to

This article discusses the social harms arising out of stigma experienced by people who use drugs (PWUD), and how stigmatisation compromises 'human flourishing' and constrains 'life choices'. Drawing on Wellcome Trust qualitative research using in-depth, semi-structured interview data (N = 24) with people who use heroin, crack cocaine, spice and amphetamine, this article firstly provides insight into how stigma is operationalised relationally between people via a lens of class talk and drug use predicated on normative ideas of 'valued personhood'. Secondly, it turns to how stigma is weaponised

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics, which commonly presents with multiple behavioral problems, including co-morbid attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Both tics and co-morbid conditions have been shown to potentially affect patients' health-related quality of life. While TS typically presents in childhood, its manifestations peak in severity during adolescence, a critical period in which affected individuals are exposed to potential stigma from peers. Physical and behavioral

As more women become infected with HIV, the issue of childbearing becomes increasingly salient. A more nuanced understanding of women's situations is needed to provide high-quality and relevant services and support. We examined reproductive decision making among 20 women living with HIV through in-depth interviews. These women made decisions within situations of chaos, instability, and trauma, which often limited their ability to make truly informed choices about their lives and childbearing. Despite their HIV, many of the women wanted children, but experienced stigmatization related both to t
