Staphylococcus saprophyticus: Which beta-lactam?

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus saprophyticus is resistant to the drugs most often used for the empirical treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI). The adequacy of antimicrobial treatments prescribed for UTI due to S. saprophyticus is not usually questioned. This study described the epidemiology of such infections and assessed the susceptibility of S. saprophyticus to ceftriaxone and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid. METHODS: Methicillin-susceptible S. saprophyticus (MSSS) isolated from clinical samples between November 2014 and July 2016 were included. Clinical data were recorded. The minimum inhib

Bacterial prostatitis caused by Staphylococcus saprophyticus.

Staphylococcus saprophyticus has been shown to be an important uropathogen in urinary tract infections in young women. Thirty-five isolates from 27 patients with staphylococci in the prostatic fluid of men with bacterial prostatitis were evaluated for the presence of S. saprophyticus. Three patients (11 per cent) with this organism were identified by novobiocin resistance (disk diffusion test), absence of hemolysis, and coagulase. These patients tended to be younger, more symptomatic, and more responsive to appropriate antibiotic therapy than those with staphylococcus epidermidis. S. saprophyt

Urinary tract infection caused by Staphylococcus saprophyticus.

This study was designed to determine whether Staphylococcus saprophyticus was an important cause of urinary tract infection (UTI), as has been reported by European, but not by American, investigators, S. saprophyticus was the second most common cause of UTI in young (mean age, 20 years), sexually active female outpatients without known preexisting kidney disease or preceding manipulation of the urinary tract. Most cases presented as acute cystitis, but frank pyelonephritis and UTI in pregnant females were observed. The organism was rarely found as a contaminant in urine cultures. When present

[What are we learning about Staphylococcus saprophyticus?].

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus saprophyticus is frequent cause of urinary tract infection in women; hence, it is important to know the epidemiology and antibiotic susceptibility of this microorganism. METHOD: A retrospective longitudinal study was performed in urine specimens from outpatients in our health area cultured in the Microbiology Laboratory of C.E. Argüelles (Madrid, Spain) over a 10-year period (1997-2006). RESULTS: Among 35,136 urine cultures with a significant count, we identified 331 S. saprophyticus (0.9%); 324 in women and 7 in men. Mean age of the infected patients was 32.7 ye

Staphylococcus saprophyticus urinary tract infections in children.

Staphylococcus saprophyticus commonly causes urinary tract infection (UTI) in young women; in males it is found mainly in the elderly. In this study S. saprophyticus UTI occurred in 59 children (45 girls and 14 boys) below 16 years of age, of whom 20 were less than 13 years of age. The common presentation was dysuria and flank or back pain whereas fever > or = 38.5 degrees C was rare. Radiological investigation performed in 63% of the children revealed no anomalies of importance. Children with S. saprophyticus UTI appear to constitute a group with a low frequency of urinary tract anomalies and

[Urinary tract infection by Staphylococcus saprophyticus in a child].

UNLABELLED: Staphylococcus (S.) saprophyticus belongs to the coagulase-negative staphylococci and is the cause of urinary tract infections, especially in young women, rarely in children and in elderly men. Probably the real incidence of urinary tract infections due to these organisms is higher than usually accepted. We report on a 11 3/12-year-old girl, who developed symptoms of a urinary tract infection (dysuria, flank pain), but without fever and elevated CRP. In the bladder aspirate we found leukocytes and S. saprophyticus (cotrimoxazole-resistant). Ultrasound detected intrarenal doubling,

Staphylococcus saprophyticus as a cause of urinary tract infections.

Our objectives in this study were to elucidate various aspects of the epidemiology of Staphylococcus saprophyticus. This organism was isolated from the midstream urine specimens of 7.5% of 145 college women with frequency and urgency of urination and dysuria, but from only 0.07% of 14,835 urine specimens from adult inpatients at the Victoria General Hospital. It was found to be part of the urethral flora of only 2% of healthy women. Other staphylococci which formed part of the urethral flora of 100 healthy women included S. epidermidis (59 women), S. hominis (15 women), S. haemolyticus (13 wom

Haemagglutination by Staphylococcus saprophyticus and other staphylococcal species.

Staphylococcus saprophyticus was found to differ from Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus by its ability to agglutinate sheep erythrocytes. On testing 30 strains of each species, 28 strains of S. saprophyticus and one strain each of the other two species, caused agglutination. Twenty-eight of 30 strains of staphylococcus cohnii and Staphylococcus xylosis failed to cause haemagglutination. The haemagglutinating activity of S. saprophyticus, when using a 10 per cent bacterial suspension was demonstrated in dilutions of 1:2-1:32. It was reduced twofold, at most, when exposing the

Staphylococcus saprophyticus in males with symptoms of chronic prostatitis.

Staphylococcus saprophyticus was isolated in 17 percent (12 of 71 men) during one year, but with a peak in August and September to 21 percent in patients referred to the urology department with a suspicion of chronic bacterial prostatitis. Seven of the 12 men had S. saprophyticus in highest number at the prostatic level. Three of these were designated as chronic bacterial prostatitis. In this study the occurrence of S. saprophyticus appears to follow, and possibly depends on, previous antibiotic therapy. S. saprophyticus disappeared without treatment in all cases.

Characteristics of Staphylococcus saprophyticus Isolated from Humans and Animals.

Staphylococcus saprophyticus (S. saprophyticus) is an opportunistic coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CoNS) known to cause urinary tract infections in humans and is increasingly recognized in veterinary medicine. The aim of this study was to provide an epidemiological characterization of S. saprophyticus strains and to identify potential virulence factors that may contribute to interspecies transmission. This research is particularly important, as companion animals represent an understudied reservoir of this microorganism, and their role in the spread of resistant pathogens remains insufficie

Antibody response to Staphylococcus saprophyticus in urinary tract infection.

The serological response towards Staphylococcus saprophyticus in young women with symptomatic urinary tract infection was measured with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a direct agglutination (DA) test. In both assays a marked antibody response was found in 2 of 3 patients with acute pyelonephritis caused by S. saprophyticus. Patients with acute cystitis due to S. saprophyticus or Escherichia coli showed antibody titers comparable to those of healthy controls.

A case of Staphylococcus saprophyticus bacteremia caused by obstructive pyelonephritis.

Herein, we present the case of a 64-year-old woman diagnosed with left calculous pyelonephritis. Gram-positive cocci in clusters were isolated from two sets of her blood culture. These cocci were later identified as Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Although S. saprophyticus is a common causative pathogen of urinary tract infection (UTI) among young women, coagulase-negative staphylococci including S. saprophyticus isolated from UTI patients' blood samples were often considered a result of contamination because of their rareness. Considering the high percentage of methicillin-resistant strains of

Staphylococcus saprophyticus as a common cause of urinary tract infections.

Until the last decade, coagulase-negative staphylococci occurring in urine specimens were usually regarded as a contaminant. In the early 1970s, i.e., more than ten years after the original demonstration of Staphylococcus saprophyticus in urine specimens, this species became recognized as a frequent cause of urinary tract infections (UTI). In young women, S. saprophyticus is, after Escherichia coli, the second-most-frequent causative agent of acute UTI. Patients with UTI caused by S. saprophyticus usually present with symptomatic cystitis. Signs and symptoms of renal involvement are also often

Acute Bacterial Prostatitis Caused by Staphylococcus saprophyticus: A Case Report.

Acute bacterial prostatitis can burden patients with an abrupt onset of lower urinary tract symptoms. Proper treatment is necessary to prevent various complications that require hospitalization and surgical intervention. Thus, it is important to know what bacteria may cause this infection and what treatments may lead to a complete resolution. While acute bacterial prostatitis is usually caused by Escherichia coli, Enterobacteriae species, and various other species, Staphylococcus saprophyticus is a relatively unique cause that has seldomly been associated with any prostatic diseases. This case

Staphylococcus saprophyticus urinary tract infections: epidemiological data from Western Australia.

Epidemiological data from Western Australia regarding Staphylococcus saprophyticus urinary tract infections (UTIs) was collected over a 12 month period. Eighty-four percent of S. saprophyticus UTIs occurred in females 13-40 years of age and S. saprophyticus was the second most frequent cause of UTIs in this age group (15.2%) after Escherichia coli (70.8%). Although the monthly incidence fluctuated, no seasonality of S. saprophyticus UTIs could be demonstrated. The proportion of S. saprophyticus UTIs in pregnant women (6.5%) compared with non-pregnant women (15.2%) appeared reduced, however, th

Experimental acute pyelonephritis in grivet monkeys, provoked by Staphylococcus saprophyticus.

Urinary tract infection by Staphylococcus saprophyticus was provoked in two female grivet monkeys. A non-hemagglutinating strain of S. saprophyticus was injected into the renal pelvis of one of the animals (monkey I), while in the other (monkey II), a hemagglutinating strain of the same species was inoculated into the bladder by suprapubic puncture. In monkey I, massive hematuria and proteinuria were demonstrated during the post-inoculation (p.i.) week, after which the monkey was killed. In monkey II, which was killed after 2 weeks, hematuria and proteinuria were present during the first 5 p.i
